30 Years of Career! | 30 Anos de Carreira!

2025 marked the 30th anniversary of my professional debut! Although I drew comics since childhood, in fanzines and also published in Readers' Galleries of superhero magazines, it was in 1995 that I did my first professional work: a poster for Montijo's Youth Week. A few years earlier, I released my first short comic in the highschool newspaper O Ardina #3 (1993), which marked my editorial debut – albeit amateurish, at the age of fifteen. I remember doing more than was needed for the poster, drawing a dozen images to choose one, and on that occasion I had the opportunity to make the color separations for printing, an analog physical composition process from the time when computers didn't handle everything.

Later that year, I ventured into other fields: First, I won my first awards, namely a drawing contest from
ArtNove magazine and 9ªArte bookstore, and a comics contest from BDmania store and Novo Grupo de Teatro, in which I won 3rd Prize and a Critics' Choice Award for Revelation Artist. The works were exhibited at the 5th FIBDA/Amadora BD, which marked my first appearance at a comics festival.
That year, I published my first comic in the field, in Curso de BD CAM/CITEN'95 anthology, by Gulbenkian, along with the fanzine Fantasia Estúdio: Portfólio. A year of debuts!
While I continued working in advertising, on storyboards and illustrations, comics work never stopped; soon, in 1996, I began collaborating with fanzines from all over the country and had a solo debut, with my anthology of short stories Compêndio, a self-published book with support by Montijo City Hall.

So, although my comics publishing has been erratic over these three decades, in creative and promotional terms I was never far from the practice. For me, it is good to celebrate this important date with so many new editions, both in Portugal and internationally.

Blast from the Past: Macho-Alfa

This one is barely a “Blast from the Past”, having just turned 20 years old. And I regret the reason behind this post…
In 2006, I met the creative team behind BRK, a serialized comic in the bimonthly BDjornal, released by Jorge Machado Dias’ Pedranocharco. Filipe Duarte Pina (writer) and Filipe Andrade (artist) were two newcomers with a lot of creative energy and while Filipe Andrade went on to have a comics career, Filipe Pina made his name in videogames, producing with his NerdMonkey company the first portuguese videogame created for PlayStation. I had talks with him to share what little knowledge I had on how to navigate publishers and over the years got to enjoy his moves as an author.
In
the last couple of years his biggest effort was writting and coloring the tetralogy Macho Alfa, with artist Osvaldo Medina, published by A Seita. Unfortunately, this week Filipe Pina (1979-2025) left us, way too early, just ahead of seeing his saga completed with vol4.

Over the years, Pina and I discussed collaborating a few times. He first asked if I’d like to draw the sequel to
BRK – which I thought would be a bad fit, given my art is too different from Filipe Andrade’s – and later he approached with another idea he had, titled Macho Alfa. I was going through a rough time and hadn’t the disposition to venture on a lenghty project, and Pina himself was still putting the concept together.
However, I drew this tryout at the time, to give it a swing, and I’m sharing it here in Pina’s memory.

Filipe Pina’s legacy has left a mark in the portuguese millennium comics and the community has lost one of it’s strongest voices. RIP my friend.

Blast from the Past: Guilty (2003-2004)

Following the ephemerid regarding my editorial debut, today I recall my first professional work in comics, in 2003, ten years after my artistic lauch. Regretfully, this work was never published and an NDA prevents me from showcasing all artwork that wasn’t released as preview teaser by the publisher – but that won’t prevent me discussing it.
After my first outing in the industry, via the Spotlight Gallery in magazine
Previews #8 (2001), a trade magazine that covered comics news (and in the backend held the monthly Diamond Comics catalogue), where several of my artworks were shown as a newcomer talent of note, Platinum Studios editor Lee Nordling approached me to draw one of this new publisher’s scripts.

Platinum was just starting, working with Hollywood studios to release comics projects greelit for screen adaptations. Two grabbed my eye, Andrew Foley’s
Cowboys & Aliens western+sci-fi graphic novel (one of the few to go forward with a movie adaptation, in 2011) and Steven Grant’s thriller Guilty, featuring Coin, an infamous thief who accepts missions that expose corrupt people. As a fan of Grant’s Marvel work, I went with this project and in the following months created the characters – based on short-lists of movie stars – and, once it was optioned, at the end of 2003, I moved on with drawing + inking pages.
Those were my first comics-earned dollars. Aside from being featured online among Platinum Publishing’s premier GNs and spotlighted in a company ashcan teaser, the project fell through when the movie studio failed to secure the 2nd optioning phase, which would advance the book to post-production, thus cancelling it, unfortunatelly.

It was a great opportunity for me, nevertheless, and a worthy professional experience. Had it gone the distance, along with being the first portuguese artist to be published in the US (in Previews #8/01), I would have also been first to release a comic.
The up-side of the experience was the good relations I maintained with Grant and Nordling, the latter of which I collaborated with again in 2006 or 2007, on another comic-to-movie project, fostered by New Line Productions Inc.; but that’s a story for another time… Also, around this time, while working for Platinum, I got in touch with inker/agent Joe Prado, at Art & Comics International, with whom I keep a good relationship, following him in his Chiaroscuro and Prado’s Art Studios endeavours.

Blast from the Past: O Ardina #3 (1993)

This year marks the 30th(!) anniversary of my editorial debut. I had produced DIY comics fanzines since 1991, with my Specter mini-zines and Dalton first two volumes, but those were only circulated among my friends. My first public publication was a comics suplement in high-school regional newspaper O Ardina/The Paperboy #3, published by my Montijo high-school.
This short comic is a satirical story featuring the high-school principal and various shenanigans and private jokes, written by
Victor Gaspar, a senior that at the time was also a Judo colleague of mine.
It’s safe to say that although I could draw, it was all very very bad. Here’s a (good) panel from the comic. Hurray for first steps!

Blast from the Past: Braza

This month marks 25 years since I created my first professional comic book cover, for a magazine that would be published in a sindicalized newspaper, titled Braza (meaning Ember, but purposely mispelled). The magazine ended up not moving forward, due to lack of sponsors, although the newspaper was interested in publishing it, so the cover was never used, but it was fun to create. I tried to make an illustration that was different from my usual work, more painterly and expressive, with mixed media; something that would draw the public's attention without creating a specific expectation as for the type of comic presented therein.
It was also my first collaboration with artist and companion Susana Resende, who served as a model for the female figure and inspiration for the story’s main character.

Braza was a sort of creepy-pasta, supernatural story, to which I never went back to. The magazine would have other contributors, each developing their own series or short comics.

Blast from the Past: The Authority

Earlier this month, the new DCU direction announced the first adaptation to screen of The Authority, one the most popular superteam comics of the millennium and, without a doubt, the title that ushered in a new age for comic-books, with a focus of smart, quick-paced story, with charismatic and controversial characters doing over-the-top, outrageous action. The book, created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, and later Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, outdid itself in every issue and left a mark in the medium, not only by the stories it told but through the crafting of telling them. I’m very excited to see them in a movie!

Around this time 19 years ago, a very young me had the opportunity to showcase artwork to draw the 2rd volume of the book, for which I drew this try-out illustration and a sequential sample (that I don’t have anymore). Thankfully, I didn’t get the gig, because I was too inexperienced to handle it; however, I still get a kick out of these characters – Jack Hawksmoor, Swift, The Doctor, The Engineer, and of course Apollo & The Midnighter, the main duo within the team, plus baby Jenny Quantum.

Blast from the Past: Comix Magazine #4 – Cover / Capa

This October marks twenty years since I drew this cover for comics magazine Comix #4, published by Devir. Although I had drawn several covers before, those were for fanzines or indie publications; this one was my first cover with a wide commercial distribution.
The invitation came from editor João Lameiras and publisher José de Freitas, for an issue focused on Alan Moore’s comics writing. Originally, they wanted to use an amazing Alex Ross painting, but because that included characters from diferent publishers that can’t be featured together, an alternative had to be created. Since I had already collaborated with a Comedian illustration for the Table of Contents inside, I was tasked with the work, afterwards to be colored by Pedro Potier.

The idea was to insinuate the Mage’s creations more so than outright show them, hence I drew in vynes to allude to The Swamp-Thing, the Comedian button as a wink to The Watchmen and a non-descript silluette that could be perceived as being Jack the Ripper, from From Hell. MiracleMan was the only superhero that could be shown, since, at the time, its editorial status was in limbo. It was a great challenge at the time and preceded me starting to work for the first professional project that I drew in the USA market.

Blast from the Past: Hulk

It has been a few year since I’ve posted something in my Blast from the Past tag. So today I’m going back fifteen years to one of my first (it not the first) Marvel Comics samples, featuring one of my childhood favorite heroes – The Hulk!
This page comes from a group of four sequentials pages that I drew back then, from a She-Hulk script, where Hulk had a brief cameo in (that’s Jennifer/She-Hulk, in the last panel). Unfortunately, the pages were “lost” in an exhibition I did, and with the loss of a hard-drive a few years later, this low-res image is the sole survivor from that work. Hope you enjoy it!

It is with great regret that I learned yesterday of the passing of Jorge Machado Dias (1953-2020). Just over a year after Geraldes Lino's departure, the portugueses comics community now loses its other tireless promoter... In addition to being a comics editor and writer, plus graphic designer at his publisher Pedranocharco, which began in 1995, Jorge was also director of BDjornal/Comics Newspaper throughout its thirty publications (2005-2013), an ambitious and seminal editorial project was a dozens of times awarded by the public and professionals in the field, in distintions like Central Comics Trophies and others.
Among his numerous contributions to the field, I highlight the “discovery” and bet on authors such as José Carlos Fernandes, Filipe Andrade and Filipe Pina, Hugo Teixeira and others, including the authors of Fantasia Estúdio; namely, Eliseu Gouveia, from whom he published the debut album Medusa31: Nec Pluribus Impar (1996), plus Pedro Potier and me, to whom he dedicated a supplement in BD-in-Folio #1 (1998). This was my first publication with projection in the Portuguese community (after debuting in the fanzines BDzona and Boletim CPBD #89, in 1996), reproducing “A Malta: O Início/The Gang: Beguining” created and colored by Pedro and penciled & inked by me, which fueled my dream of being able to, one day, be a professional comics author.
These contacts originated in his support of Fantasia Estúdio, offering to publish our anthology BDzona through his publisher, an invitation that appeared in the (simultaneous) debut year of Pedranocharco and our group of authors, from which we have this memory: a cover proposal made by Jorge himself.

After these first contacts, I maintained a friendly relationship with Jorge over the years, more frequent during the various collaborations at BDjornal, mainly as reporter for the annual comics market statistics and as a writer for other articles, but also as an illustrator and comics author.
A few years ago, Jorge found this (embarrassing) quick drawing that I made of him on a gathering – in his honor, I share it here.

Blast from the Past: Batman 1989

It's mind-boggling to think that it's been thirty years since the release of Warner Bros' 1989 adaptation of Batman, the first movie to bring the Dark Knight to the big screen, directed by then-newcomer Tim Burton, with an iconic instrumental score by Danny Elfman and a kick-ass soundtrack by Prince, and featuring Michael Keaton (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Jack Nicholson (Joker) and Kim Basinger (Vicky Vale).
Being around ten years old, I was at the right age to get caught up the all the “Batmania” craze – and, believe me, it was a gigantic cultural phenomenon back then! – and, although I don't exactly recall seeing the film at the theater, I remember the excitement of the trailer repeatedly showing on the tv. Aside from getting the (costly) amazing graphic novel adaptation by Dennis O'Neal and Jerry Ordway, and completing (for the 1st time ever) the stickers' album, I also drew the Bat constantly; and I still have a few of those older drawings, because it was around when I began using books instead of loose blank sheets...

Blast from the Past: Covers artwork I / Arte de capas I

After a Facebook challege to share 10 favorite comics covers over 10 days, I decided to take the cue and share all my covers artwork created throught the years. This first batch relates to my amateur years, starting with the self-published superhero fanzines Guardiães Lusitanos/Lusitanian Guardians #1 (1994) and Hep7eto #1 (1995), my anthology volume Compêndio/Compendium (1996), two collaborations for fanzines Morte/Death #6 (1996) and Boletim do CPBD/Portuguese Comics Club Bulletin #90 (1996), plus a new self-published fanzine Orfeu #1 (1997), a suplement in the comics newspaper BD-in-Folio #1 (1998), and, finaly, Club Apocalipse (1999).
There were a couple more illustrated covers within this time span, but these are the main ones. Check back soon for the follow-ups.

Blast from the Past: Mural

My parents cleaned up their garagem and found a rolled-up scenery paper that, to my surprise, had glued on it a brunch of old drawings of mine from my penultimate year in high-school, twenty some years ago (gulp!). I had totally forgotten about them.
These sketches and preliminary artwork were done for an in-contest at my Art class, for us to choose from a concept to paint a
mural. My drawing was chosen and, for the next couple of months, all my colleagues rolled-up our sleeves and painted it on a wall by the cafeteria, that outlooked the street – it was grooling and great fun!
By then, I had already published my first comic in the school newspaper and drawn a Youth Week poster for the city hall, so this was sort of my “hat trick.” Today, both the mural and the wall aren't there anymore, but it was great to see that painting up there for so many years, though.
