XXIII Troféus Central Comics – Winners / Vencedores

It is with pleasure that I got the XXIII Central Comics Trophies’ results, announced at the 4th Maia BD. On the 25th anniversary of this award (it didn't happen in two years), the sole one in Portugal where comics readers and general public determine the finalists and winners, and after being nominated in 4 categories, I thank everyone for awarding me TWO trophies!
Namely, graphic novel
Cadáver Esquisito! won as Best Independent Publication, and I partake in the victory of inVISIVEIS as Best Anthology. Also, ‘Eduardo Lourenço: Ficção de Si – Intro’ was the runner-up in Best Webcomic, which is something.

These awards are special because they come from great collaborations and I want to aplaude the colleagues with whom I share these awards. Once again, thank you all! And, to wrap up, check out the historical records of TCC now online.

The 22th Trophies Central Comics winners were announced this past satursday at MaiaBD and I was honored with the award for Best Comics Anthology, for April, Carnation Showers – Stories of Freedom. This award is shared with my friends – and formers students – in TágIIde group and colleague Susana Resende, who created the book, plus Montijo City, that supported us by publishing it.
Aside editorial coordination and art direction, I also contributed with one of the short comics therein, which was also nominated in a couple of categories.

My thanks to the readers and voters that brought us this great distinction, and to Central Comics for their initiative! And to all the winners and fellow nominees, my appreciation for their creativity excellence.

My short comic “The Most Beautiful Insubordination”, featured in April, Carnation Showers’ anthology, has been nominated for Best Short Comic by Portuguese Author in Vinheta d’Ouro awards. This prize is promoted since 2021 by reviewer/columnist Hugo Pinto at his Vinheta2020 blog and is helped by a couple dozen of comics authors and reviewers, with the awarding ceremony being transmited via YouTube.

This is my first nomination in this award and I’m happy for the consideration. ‘The Most Beautiful Insubordination’ was previously nominated for Best Short Comic at the 6th BD Awards, which leaves me humbled by the recognition already acchieved, especially since it aims to homage one of Portugal’s most beloved artists, João Abel Manta, depicting (briefly) how he fought against the New State dictatorship with his satirical cartoons. Read the full comic HERE.

Leia a BD completa AQUI.

6º Prémio Bandas Desenhadas – Winner / Vencedor

Very unexpectedly, a few days after the reveal of the nominees for the 6th Bandas Desenhadas Awards, this portuguese comics news and reviews website announced the year’s winners. It was my pleasure to see that my book April, Carnation Showers – Stories of Freedom won the Best Anthology category.

April, Carnation Showers – Stories of Freedom is an anthology created by comics group TágIIde, which me and Susana Resende had a hand in originating, and with which we collaborated in this edition; I coordinated the book and contributed with a short comic (nominated for Best Short Comic), and Susana illustrated the cover and did the design.
TágIIde is a new interation of Tágide collective that was formed from Susana’s sequential art courses (2018-2020) and which I further incited towards comics creations in the
Outras Bandas comics fanzine that I directed (2019-2023). After 4 years, Tágide called it a day and a few of the more willful artists gathered in a new and more professionally oriented group, TágIIde, which had their debut in this edition. Their goal is to have a new anthology every year and they are already producing their follow-up effort.
April, Carnation Showers
was published by Montijo municipality, which has continuously supported the Arts in recent years, including comics creations, not only by promoting the BD Montijo comics courses and it’s respective book and exhibition, but also by sponsoring our initial fanzines and also offering a place for the artists to meet.

Our
Outras Bandas titles and comics have had seven nominations in Bandas Desenhadas Awards over the years, but this is our first win, so I would like to thank the jury for their acknoledgement and congratulate my fellow creators and Montijo’s city hall for this acchievement.

The VI Prémio Bandas Desenhadas/Comic Book Awards has revealed their nominanees for 2024. This is a simbolic award given out by one of Portugal’s comics news & reviews website, BandasDesenhadas.com, according to their in-house critics and collaborators. I have been associated with this awards since the start, given that I was invited to create the characters that illustrate the four rounds of nominations.

Having been nominated many times before, this time I was selected for two categories: Best Anthology, with April, Carnation Showers, which I coordinated and produced alonside the TágIIde group, plus Best Short Comic, with “The Most Beautiful Insubordination”, which was my creative contribution for the previously mentioned anthology and is dedicated to artist João Abel Manta.

On behalf of my colleagues and myself, thank you for the nominations! Congratulations also to my fellow finalists.
