XXI Central Comics Trophies | XXI Troféus Central Comics

The 2nd oldest merit award for comics and cartoons in Portugal is back! The 21st Central Comics Trophies has announced the dates for this year's edition of the competition for the best works and authors published in 2023. Entering its third decade of activity, TCC will once again remodel the awards to adapt to changes in the Portuguese market and proposes new categories to vote by the general public – see here.
The preliminary round takes place between April 29th and May 4th, and voting takes place between April 5th and 19th, with the winners being revealed at the 2nd MaiaBD festival, between May 25th and 26th.

It is with pleasure to again find myself in the readers’ consideration, which is why I highlight the works I released last year that are eligible. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

O 2º mais antigo prémio de mérito para banda desenhada e cartoon em Portugal está de volta! O 21º Troféus Central Comics anunciou as datas da edição deste ano do escrutínio às melhores obras e autores publicados em 2023. Entrando na terceira década de actividade, o TCC vai novamente remodelar os prémios para se adaptar às mudanças do mercado português e propõe novas categorias a votar pelo grande público – ver aqui.
A pré-eliminatória decorre entre 29 de Abril e 4 de Maio, e a votação entre 5 e 19 de Abril, sendo os vencedores revelados no 2º festival MaiaBD, entre 25 e 26 de Maio.

Homage to Alma – Exhibition | Homenagem a Alma – Exposição

The 6th CoimbraBD comics festival will host the collective exhibition “Homages to Alma”, with interpretations by several artists of O Umbigo do Mundo / The Navel of the World series’ heroine, by Penim Loureiro (original idea and art) and Carlos Silva (script).
For my part, I participate with a colored version of the drawing of the character that I did back in 2022, for the Tágide: Portuguese Heroes initiative.

Don’t miss it, at Convento S. Francisco, between April 25th and 28th, from 10am-8pm (weekdays) and 10am-6pm (weekends), with free entry.

O 6º salão CoimbraBD vai acolher a exposição colectiva “Homenagens à Alma”, com interpretações por vários artistas da heroína da série O Umbigo do Mundo, por Penim Loureiro (ideia original e arte) e Carlos Silva (guião).
Pela minha parte, participo com uma versão colorida do desenho que da personagem em 2022, alusivo à iniciativa Tágide: Heróis Portugueses.

Abril, Cravos Mil – Histórias de Liberdade / April, Carnation Showers – Stories of Freedom is a comics anthology from Montijo City Council, part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the 25th of April Revolution.
The project was created by the TágIIde group, derived from the Tágide collective (2019-2023), which includes artists Mário André (Quaresma, o Decifrador), José Macedo Bandeira (Aurora Boreal em Reflexos Partilhados), Maria João Claré (BD Montijo: Antologia I), António Coelho (Capitão Morsa e seus Amigos), Patrícia Costa (Crónicas de Enerelis), Yves Darbos (BD Montijo: Antologia I) and Jorge 'RoD' Rodrigues (Cruzada Negra). Authors Daniel Maia (CoBrA: Operação Goa) and Susana Resende (Provérbios de Animais), who co-founded the original group, are present as guest artists, and are also responsible for a comic and editorial direction and for the cover illustration and book design, respectively.

April, Carnation Showers – Stories of Freedom celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution with eight short comics with varied approaches, from humor to drama and from historical action to allegory. The narratives are based on key moments of the military movement and personal views of the date, as well as speculative explorations of national society.
The book repeats the cultural support of the Montijense municipality in the sector, after releasing BD Montijo: Iniciação à Arte Sequential – Antologia I (2022), which showcased the final works of students from the courses led by Susana Resende between 2018-2020, at the invitation of Montijo. The book was finalist for Best Anthology at the 4th Comic Books Prize and for Best Independent Publication and Best Short Comics at the XX Central Comics Trophies, winning the latter category.

The book will be presented on April 26th, Friday, at 6pm, in the 2nd Foyer of Movie-Theater Joaquim d’Almeida, and integrated into the celebrations program of the Montijo City Council. It will also be presented at VI CoimbraBD, on 28/4, at Convent S. Francisco.

Abril, Cravos Mil – Histórias de Liberdade é uma antologia de banda desenhada da Câmara Municipal de Montijo, integrada nas festas do 50º aniversário do 25 de Abril.
O projecto foi criado pelo grupo TágIIde, derivado do colectivo Tágide (2019-2023), em que alinham os artistas Mário André (Quaresma, o Decifrador), José Macedo Bandeira (Aurora Boreal em Reflexos Partilhados), Maria João Claré (BD Montijo: Antologia I), António Coelho (Capitão Morsa e seus Amigos), Patrícia Costa (Crónicas de Enerelis), Yves Darbos (BD Montijo: Antologia I) e Jorge Rodrigues (Cruzada Negra). Em Abril, Cravos Mil – Histórias de Liberdade, celebra-se os 50 anos da Revolução dos Cravos com oito BDs de abordagens variadas, do humor ao drama e da acção histórica à alegoria. As narrativas são baseadas em momentos-chave do movimento militar e em visões pessoais da data, e ainda em explorações especulativas sobre a sociedade nacional.
O livro repete o apoio cultural da autarquia montijense no sector, depois de publicar BD Montijo: Iniciação à Arte Sequencial - Antologia I (2022), com os trabalhos finais dos alunos dos cursos conduzidos por Susana Resende entre 2018-2020, a convite da C.M.M. O livro foi finalista em Melhor Antologia no 4º Prémio Bandas Desenhadas e em Melhor Publicação Independente e Melhor Obra Curta no XX Troféus Central Comics, vencendo esta última.

O livro é apresentado dia 26 de Abril, Sexta-feira, às 18h, no 2º Foyer do Cinema Teatro Joaquim d’Almeida, e integrado no programa de comemorações da Câmara Municipal de Montijo.
Vai igualmente ser apresentado no 6º CoimbraBD, no dia 28/4, no Convento de S. Francisco.

50 Years of April 25th | 50 Anos do 25 de Abril

April marks an important date not only in the Portuguese calendar, but also in the country's History, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.
Half a century ago, in a Portugal under the Salazar dictatorship, which began in 1933 with the approval of the Portuguese Constitution but in an increasingly oppressive political and social environment, worsened by the Overseas War (1961-1974) against the Portuguese colonies in Africa, which worsened the economic crisis which was felt, a military action took place in Lisbon led by the Caldas da Rainha No.5 Infantry Regiment, led by the Captains of April. Putting an end to 41 uninterrupted years of the tyranny by the New State, the Armed Forces Movement, with around three hundred officers on the ground, overthrew the government on April 25, 1974 and reestablished democracy in the country.

On the 50th anniversary of this seminal moment in our History, Montijo City Council, in partnership with the new artists group TágIIde, commemorates the date with the anthology, April, Carnations Showers – Stories of Freedom, which presents eight short comics of varied approaches, from drama to humor and from historical action to allegory, to celebrate Freedom Day in Portugal! Abril marca uma data importante não só do calendário português, como da história do país, pois celebramos 50 anos da Revolução dos Cravos.
Há meio século, num Portugal sob o regime da ditadura salazarista, iniciada em 1933 com a aprovação da Constituição Portuguesa mas num ambiente político e social cada vez mais opressivo, piorado pela Guerra do Ultramar (1961-1974) contra as colónias portuguesas em África, que agravou a crise económica sentida, decorria em Lisboa uma acção militar protagonizada pelo Regimento de Infantaria n.º 5 das Caldas da Rainha, liderado pelos Capitães de Abril. Pondo fim a 41 anos ininterruptos da tirania do Estado Novo, o Movimento das Forças Armadas, com cerca de trezentos oficiais no terreno, derruba o governo no dia 25 de Abril de 1974 e restabelece a democracia no país.

No 50º aniversário deste momento seminal da nossa História, a Câmara Municipal de Montijo, em parceria com o novo grupo autoral TágIIde, comemora a data com a antologia Abril, Cravos Mil – Histórias de Liberdade, que apresenta oito BDs curtas de abordagens variadas, do drama ao humor e da acção histórica à alegoria, para comemorar o Dia da Liberdade em Portugal! Comics for 2024 | BD em 2024

I’m doing this too late this year, but following the aftermath of 2023, it’s time to hint at what’s to come: last year was gratifying, with CoBrA being the most reviewed book in Portugal - and positively so - and also the most nominated graphic novel in portuguese awards that year, with six nominations distributed in Amadora Comics Awards, Trophies Central Comics, Geeks d’Ouro, Vinhetas d’Ouro and BD Awards. Another edition in which I collaborated, Zona: Dez Anos, won as Best Independent Book in Amadora Comics Awards.
I also partook in anthologies Outras Bandas #9 (with “Long Live”), Terminal: 25 Years of Stories and Alzine #1 (with “UltraViolet”), and finished the year with the one-shot comic Cthulhu Sadino, with Pedro Moura & Marco Gomes.

For 2024, I’m planning big things. I will not attend most comics events, but hope that the work output will offset my absence.
First, in the 2nd quarter, I contribute to e-magazine Giby #3, by publisher Quadriculando, where I publish the short comic “Delluge,” that Pedro Moura wrote and is part of Cthulhu Sadino, and I also collaborate in anthology Abril, Cravos Mil, that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the end of Portugal’s dictatorial government.

Over the summer, Longshot Prod. will release a teaser of the upcoming graphic novel Eduardo Lourenço, that homages the most renown portuguese thinker of our time, with writers Sabrina D. Marques and Diogo Figueira. I also hope to release my new book, Mala-Posta, that mixes historical accounts and western-type adventure, with artistic cameos by Daniel Henriques and Susana Resende.

Next, there’s a few works that I’m now tackling and don’t know if they will materialize in the last quarter or be left for 2025.
One is the expanded reedition of The Infante Portugal in Gathered Universes, with writer José de Matos-Cruz, now in graphic novel format, that follows this work’s awarding as Best Short Comic of the Decade earlier this year; a collaboration with a short comic in H-Alt #14, written by fellow artist Pedro Serpa; and the brazilian version of CoBrA: Operation Goa, with writer Marco Calhorda, is set to be released in the Fall.

The others, I can’t name yet... One is a lengthy swords & sandals graphic novel series and the other is a music anthology. These are the ones I wish I could reveal more about and that are taking up most of my time, but I hope they’ll make a splash when they arrive.

Estou a fazer isto demasiado tarde este ano, mas após o rescaldo de 2023, é altura de levantar o véu ao que está por vir: o ano passado foi gratificante, com CoBrA a ser o livro mais comentado em Portugal – e positivamente – e também a novela gráfica mais nomeada em prémios portugueses nesse ano, com seis nomeações distribuídas nos Prémios AmadoraBD, Troféus Central Comics, Geeks d'Ouro, Vinhetas d'Ouro e Prémios BD. Outra edição em que colaborei, Zona: Dez Anos, venceu como Melhor Edição Independente nos Prémios Amadora BD.
Participei também nas antologias Outras Bandas #9 (com “Longa Viva”), Terminal: 25 Anos de Histórias e Alzine #1 (com “UltraVioleta”), e terminei o ano com a revista singular Cthulhu Sadino, com Pedro Moura e Marco Gomes.

Para 2024, planeio muita coisa. Não vou estar na maioria dos festivais, mas espero que a materialização de trabalho compense a ausência.
Primeiro, no 2º trimestre, contribuo para a revista digital Giby #3, da Quadriculando, em que publico a história curta “Dilúvio,” escrita por Pedro Moura, que faz parte de Cthulhu Sadino, e também colaboro na antologia Abril, Cravos Mil, que celebra o 50º aniversário do fim do governo ditatorial de Portugal.

Durante o verão, a Longshot Prod. lança um teaser da vindoura novela gráfica Eduardo Lourenço, que homenageia o mais conceituado pensador português do nosso tempo, criada com os escritores Sabrina D. Marques e Diogo Figueira. Espero também lançar o meu novo livro, Mala-Posta, que mistura relato histórico e aventura western, e que inclui participações artísticas de Daniel Henriques e Susana Resende.

A seguir, há obras que estou a tratar agora e não sei se sairão no último trimestre ou se ficam para 2025.
Uma delas é a reedição expandida de O Infante Portugal em Universos Reunidos, com o escritor José de Matos-Cruz, agora em formato de novela gráfica, que se segue à consagração desta obra como Melhor Curta de Banda Desenhada da Década no início deste ano; uma colaboração com BD curta em H-Alt #14, escrita pelo colega artista Pedro Serpa; e no Outuno será lançada a versão brasileira de CoBrA: Operação Goa, do escritor Marco Calhorda.

Os outros, ainda não posso revelar... Um é uma série internacional longa, no género Espadas & Sandálias, e o outro é uma antologia de música. Estes são aqueles que mais gostava de poder revelar e que estão a ocupar a maioria do meu tempo actualmente, mas espero que vão ter impacto quando forem publicados.
