Cadáver Esquisito! – Review III / Crítica III

To capitalize on the victory of Cadáver Esquisito! as Best Independent Publication, today I'm showcasing another group of reviews of the book that were yet to be gathered. As always, my thanks to the critics.

Hugo Pinto
, in Vinheta2020:
Welcome to another ‘Postal Return’. Today I bring you a new release, which arrived in my hands a few days ago. It’s called Weird Corpse!, from publisher Arga Warga, an independent brand of Daniel Maia, author and [publisher], (…) [who dispenses] great introductions (...).
This Weird Corpse! has a premise that I really like – this is the biggest Portuguese collective comic book. And what is a collective comic? [Do you think it’s] an anthology? No, it’s not quite that. This is a creative concept that I find very cool and I really like these inventive concepts, in which a fairly large group of authors bands together, (…) some more experienced in the medium and others more newcomers, in which, starting from a page made by the author before them, they then develop their story, making their additions and putting their art at the service of [the collective project]. So it’s something that I find super creative and cool.

It’s already been done created a few years ago, (…) made between 2008 and 2015, as a webcomic at the time, and now it's available in physical format. It has a soft cover, with a glossy finish, and a really cool [illustration]. And [the book] finally makes [the initiative] available to those who followed it, so now I can resume reading it, which I’m sure will be amazing, as you can imagine. With so many dozens of authors contributing to the story, naturally it will evolve into something more original. (...) I find this type of exercise very interesting, [and deserving] to be resumed (…) and which also deserves to be known (…). [Created] by countless Portuguese authors who are too many to mention [in their entirety], here's the suggestion.”

Flávio Almeida
, in BandasDesenhadas:
Weird Corpse! is a celebration of surrealism that brings together dozens of [portuguese] authors in an exercise of collective improvisation. The work transforms narrative chaos into a coherent and delirious intrigue, functioning as a vibrant showcase of the talent of Portuguese comics. It is an “organized chaos” essential for those seeking pure creativity and experimentation outside traditional molds.”

Luís Bernardino
, in Central Comics:
It’s a very interesting book. I really liked Daniel Maia’s introduction, [which] makes reading the book a different experience right away, just like the Afterword at the end is delightful. Everything else is very cool and I found the comics very funny.
Daniel’s work in terms of coordination [is fantastic]. The truth is that it took ten years for it to be printed, but now it’s here [in book form]; if you see it, buy it, because it’s really worth it. And [furthermore], it won the [23rd] Central Comics Trophies for Best Independent Publication, with all the merit, because it’s really very funny to see that there are actually many good comic book authors [in the country], and it’s a shame that some of them aren’t doing more [work], because I would really like to see more [projects] from certain talents [featured here]. We only have 1 page of theirs here, but I would like to see many more.”

9º Coimbra BD

The City of Coimbra, in partnership with GuesTheChoice, recently announced the 9th Coimbra BD, the comics and pop culture festival that has been held in the City of Loves since 2018.
After surpassing the +18,000 visitors mark last year, the event returns to the Convent of São Francisco between April 24-26, where visitors can enjoy a varied program, including exhibitions, book fairs, autograph sessions, interaction with artists, RPG and Cosplay contests, workshops, plus presentations and discussion panels. Check out the full program here.

This year I was invited as the spotlight Portuguese author, illustrating the official poster’s image, which features the hero Infante Portugal, created by José de Matos-Cruz in a literary trilogy, and with whom I adapted it into a comic book in 2017. As the main protagonist in Matos-Cruz's fictional universe, the character was developed in twenty publications since 2004, including prose books, chapbooks, comics and anthologies, having been originally conceptualized by the master José Garcês, from whom I inherited the hero’s graphic torch.

In addition to attending the festival for autographs and at the Artist's Alley, I will be promoting the release of Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One – The Moment of Sin, from Another Door Comics, by Thomas Marvelli, and also launching A Caneta era a Lei – Tributo a Robert E. Howard, by Arga Warga Edições, an anthology by a talented group of Portuguese and PALOP artists, celebrating the 120th anniversary of the birth of the "Father of Sword and Sorcery".

The entry is free and the festival takes place between 10am-8pm. See you in Coimbra!

My 2025’ book, Cadáver Esquisito!, has been reviewed by website BandasDesenhadas. Here’s an excerpt, below:

Flávio Almeida
, on BandasDesenhadas:
:Cadáver Esquisito! is a monumental work that compiles the largest collective comics’ project ever undertaken in Portugal. [...] The work is based on the cadavre exquis system, where each author continues the narrative from the last panel left by the previous one, without a predefined plan. Due to the method, the story is a succession of unpredictable twists, exploring automatism and absurd humor. The strongest point is the collage of styles; each page or segment offers a distinct visual identity, reflecting the plurality of talents in [portuguese] comics of that decade.
The
[book] compilation transforms an ephemeral digital project into a historical document of Portuguese collective creativity. Under the direction of Daniel Maia (author and publisher), the project manages to maintain a bizarre fluidity, despite the dozens of hands involved. It is not a conventional beginning-middle-end comic, but a visual and narrative experience that defies traditional logic.”

Arga Warga in 2026 | Arga Warga em 2026

My independent publishing brand, Arga Warga, has announced the titles in preparation for release in 2026, following last year’s Cadáver Esquisito! milestone edition. This year, I will publish more “reheated” material, with most titles having just a few unreleased pages, although most of those comics will be new to todays readers.

First, there’s a compilation of 2006’s
tribute to Robert E. Howard, here with a few of unpublished short comics, marking the project’s 20th anniversary. Another anthology, titled Sinergies, will gather all the short comics I wrote that have been drawn by other artists, from around 1997-2012. And with The Infante Portugal and The Perpetual Signs we’ll return to the ficcional world created by José de Matos-Cruz, with an expanded story that also reprints the pages from the 2017’ twice awarded comic, now nearly ten years old too.
There’s two more I’m still not sure will be ready for release this year, so I’ll keep those under wraps for now.

The book Cadáver Esquisito!/Weird Corpse! has gathered a few reviews from the main critics in the field…

Hugo Jesus, on CentralComics/Youtube:
This is another tip for AmadoraBD: Cadáver Esquisito!, the largest Portuguese collective comic book, with 56 authors in 58 pages. Each page is composed by one author or [a duo] that they link together in a giant story, which took many years to produce. It is a project coordinated by Daniel Maia, at the Arga Warga publishing house.
There should be more projects of this type, (…) to bring new authors to the national market and to the shelves of [Portuguese] comics, showcased not just through the hands of large publishers. Apart from these more traditional publishers, I think [independent] projects, such as Arga Warga, Gorila Sentado or Dangan Magazine, are great for bringing us new [artists] and for them to practice and create routines for drawing and writing comics.”

Luís Bernardino, in Pranchas e Balões/Antena 1:
This idea is curious: it was a webcomic created over seven years, between 2008 and 2015, which explored the cadavre exquis system, (…) where one person draws a part (…) and another person continues, and so on (...).
The project involved practically all the [authors] of Portuguese comics at the time. Some [artists] who were starting out are now [professionals]. The [book] is not an anthology, it is a story made by [many] hands; a very interesting initiative and a collective work, overall, very good.
(…) I have to congratulate Daniel Maia, who was the coordinator of the edition – and who is one of those people who lives and breathes comics, whether as a creator, publisher [or] promoter (…) –, and who presents something very interesting and homogeneous here, which surprised me. (…) A project that was [stalled] for ten years, but I think it's good to have put it in physical form, as it's a way for many more people to discover it. And it will be a surprise to some readers, [because it's] very delirious, irreverent, and funny.”

Bruno Filipe, on CentralComics/YouTube:
In this project, there's a page that's created and the next artists have to continue the story [on their] page, and it sometimes provides quite interesting situations, where the direction can surprise the previous authors. There are a part or two where [the story] can get a little lost, [due to] a lot of plot-twists one after the other, [resulting in] some very confusing sequences. The beginning, in the first ten or fifteen pages, there's a [good] construction of the story, then somewhere in the middle I felt lost, and by the end it gets back on track.
The first page is by Hugo Jesus, with art by Nuno Sarabando. This book [interested me] because of the premise. It's a different [work], which you don't see every day. Especially in the Portuguese market, made up of [linear editions] – I found it very interesting.
I think it's also an excellent catalog of artists. Here we see different ways of telling the story, different types of art. And, at the time, there were readers who, while following [the comic], saw new artists there, [serving to showcase] new talent to the community and publishers."

Hugo Jesus, in CentralComics/Youtube:

Luís Bernardino, in Pranchas e Balões/Antena 1:

Bruno Filipe, in CentralComics/YouTube:
