The Center for Iberian Studies (CEI), in Guarda, will celebrate its 25th anniversary with conferences, theater, exhibitions, literature, visual arts, photography, and enology, in a program that extends to 2028, dedicated to the memory of Eduardo Lourenço, entitled ‘Eduardo Lourenço returns Home’.

The Center for Iberian Studies has been fundamental and an important bridge in connecting the territory, between Guarda, Coimbra, and Salamanca, but also through its higher education institutions. The CEI is the result of a challenge launched by the essayist Eduardo Lourenço (1923-2020), at the solemn session of the 800th anniversary of the charter of Guarda, on November 27, 1999. On that occasion, the thinker said he hoped that the project would contribute “not only to a renewed knowledge of the various cultures of the Peninsula, but to the study of Iberian Civilization as a whole”.

Presented at the Eduardo Lourenço Municipal Library in Guarda, the CEI's 25th anniversary program is also a tribute to the work of Eduardo Lourenço, one of the most important figures in contemporary Portuguese thought. Hélder Sequeira, a researcher of regional historiography and head of service in the municipality, is the commissioner of the commemorations.
Among the activities, there is a planned exhibition of the comic book Eduardo Lourenço: Fiction of Self – Intro, by Diogo Figueira and Sabrina D. Marques (script), with Daniel Maia (art) and Susana Resende (color), which opens in September. The graphic novel project about the thinker will also be previewed, with a contribution of the writer Gonçalo M. Tavares.

O Centro de Estudos Ibéricos (CEI), na Guarda, vai comemorar os 25 anos da fundação com conferências, exposições, literatura, teatro, artes visuais, fotografia e enologia, numa programação que se estende até 2028, dedicadas à memória de Eduardo Lourenço, designadas por ‘Eduardo Lourenço regressa a Casa’.

O Centro de Estudos Ibéricos tem sido fundamental e uma ponte importante na ligação do território, entre a Guarda, Coimbra e Salamanca, mas também, através das suas instituições de ensino superior. O CEI resulta de um desafio lançado pelo ensaísta Eduardo Lourenço (1923-2020), na sessão solene dos 800 anos do foral da Guarda, em 27 de novembro de 1999. Na altura, o pensador disse esperar que o projeto contribuísse “não apenas para um renovado conhecimento das diversas culturas da Península, mas para o estudo da Civilização Ibérica como um todo”.

Apresentada na Biblioteca Municipal Eduardo Lourenço, na Guarda, a programação dos 25 anos do CEI é também uma homenagem à obra de Eduardo Lourenço, uma das figuras mais importantes do pensamento português contemporâneo. Hélder Sequeira, investigador da historiografia regional e chefe de serviço no município, é o comissário das comemorações.
Entre as actividades, está prevista uma exposição de pranchas da banda desenhada Eduardo Lourenço: Ficção de Si – Intro, por Diogo Figueira e Sabrina D. Marques (arg.), com Daniel Maia (arte) e Susana Resende (cor), que inaugura em Setembro. Será ainda antecipado o projecto de romance gráfico sobre o pensador, com o contributo do escritor Gonçalo M. Tavares.

28th Balkans Festival of Young Comics Creators | 28th Festival Balcânico de Jovens Criadores de BD

Between June 26–28, the 28th Balkans Festival of Young Comics Creators will host an exhibition of Portuguese talents, coordinated by Paulo Monteiro, director of the Beja Comics Library, and I am pleased to once again be part of a Portuguese delegation, following previous occasions in the People's Republic of China, in 2007, and in Belgium, in 2020.

The festival takes place in Leskovac, Serbia, and unites the world's sequential art with the rich heritage of the Balkans, which continues to bring together artists from all over the world. After the 2025 edition, which highlighted over 3170 talents from 52 countries, the event aims to reach even higher levels this year.

Organizada pela Bedeteca de Beja, a mostra 'Um Olhar à BD Portuguesa Contemporânea' inclui 50 autores, abarcando uma série de temáticas e de estilos, da fantasia à ficção científica, do humor ao terror, da ficção histórica ao policia, do manga ao indie. A presença de Paulo Monteiro na Sérvia é complementada por uma bagagem de obras publicadas, que pontificam a exposição.

 

Entre 26–28 de Junho, o 28º Festival Balcânico de Jovens Criadores de Banda Desenhada, recebe uma exposição de talentos portugueses, com coordenação de Paulo Monteiro, director da Bedeteca de Beja, e tenho o prazer de voltar a integrar uma comitiva lusitana, após as anteriores ocasiões na R. P. da China, em 2007, e na Bélgica, em 2020.
O festival tem lugar em Leskovac, na Sérvia, e une a arte sequencial mundial à rica herança dos Balcãs, que continua a reunir artistas de todo o mundo. Após a edição de 2025, que destacou +3170 talentos, de 52 países, o evento ambiciona alcançar patamares mais elevados este ano.

Organized by Beja's Comics Library, the exhibition 'A Look at Contemporary Portuguese Comics' includes 50 authors, encompassing a range of themes and styles, from fantasy to science fiction, from humor to horror, from historical fiction to crime, from manga to indie. Paulo Monteiro's presence in Serbia is complemented by a wealth of published works, which are highlighted in the exhibition.

96th Lisbon Book Fair – Photos | 96a Feira do Livro de Lisboa – Fotos

The 96th Lisbon Book Fair ended last weekend, and I once again attended the Ala dos Livros book stand for autographs, thus adding my 6th participation in the event. I thank, as always, the readers and fans who visited.

On a personal note, the book fair was marked by the conclusion of the CoBrA series, written by Marco Calhorda, which I started in 2022, and by a brief conversation with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who posed with us for a photo, after in 2022 he honored us with a private letter with a note of recognition for the book Operação Goa, which featured his father, in addition to attesting to the veracity of the intrigue at the base of the story. The CoBrA: Operação Goa cycle is thus complete!

A 96ª Feira do Livro de Lisboa terminou no passado fim de semana e voltei a marcar presença no stand da Ala dos Livros, para autógrafos, somando assim a minha 6^a participação no evento. Agradeço, como sempre, aos leitores e fãs que visitaram.
A título pessoal, a feira ficou marcada pela conclusão da série CoBrA, escrita por Marco Calhorda, que iniciei em 2022, e pela breve conversa com o Presidente Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, que pousou connosco para uma foto, após em 2022 nos ter agraciado com um bilhete privado de reconhecimento pelo livro Operação Goa, que figurou o seu pai, para além de atestar a veracidade da intriga que está na base da história. O ciclo de CoBrA: Operação Goa fica assim completo!

H-Alt: Ten years Exhibition / Exposição de Dez Anos

The Portuguese comics anthology, H-Alt, conceived and coordinated by Sérgio Santos, celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2025. The title has now marked this decade of existence through a collective exhibition at the 21st Beja International Comics Festival, on display at the city's Cultural Center.
The exhibition features several sequential art pages by various authors who have contributed to the magazine, as well as the fifteen issues published to date – including issue 12, for which I provided the cover artwork and an illustrated interview.

 

 

A antologia portuguesa de banda desenhada, H-Alt, idealizada e coordenada por Sérgio Santos, comemorou dez anos em 2025. O título marcou agora essa década de existência através de uma exposição colectiva no 21º Festival Internacional de BD de Beja, patente na Casa da Cultural da cidade.
Na mostra, é possível ver várias pranchas de arte sequencial por diversos autores que passaram pela revista, assim como os quinze números publicados até hoje – entre os quais figura o #12, em que assino a capa e uma entrevista ilustrada.

Cadáver Esquisito! – Review III / Crítica III

To capitalize on the victory of Cadáver Esquisito! as Best Independent Publication, today I'm showcasing another group of reviews of the book that were yet to be gathered. As always, my thanks to the critics.

Hugo Pinto, in Vinheta2020:
“Welcome to another ‘Postal Return’. Today I bring you a new release, which arrived in my hands a few days ago. It’s called Weird Corpse!, from publisher Arga Warga, an independent brand of Daniel Maia, author and [publisher], (…) [who dispenses] great introductions (...).
This Weird Corpse! has a premise that I really like – this is the biggest Portuguese collective comic book. And what is a collective comic? [Do you think it’s] an anthology? No, it’s not quite that. This is a creative concept that I find very cool and I really like these inventive concepts, in which a fairly large group of authors bands together, (…) some more experienced in the medium and others more newcomers, in which, starting from a page made by the author before them, they then develop their story, making their additions and putting their art at the service of [the collective project]. So it’s something that I find super creative and cool.

It’s already been done created a few years ago, (…) made between 2008 and 2015, as a webcomic at the time, and now it's available in physical format. It has a soft cover, with a glossy finish, and a really cool [illustration]. And [the book] finally makes [the initiative] available to those who followed it, so now I can resume reading it, which I’m sure will be amazing, as you can imagine. With so many dozens of authors contributing to the story, naturally it will evolve into something more original. (...) I find this type of exercise very interesting, [and deserving] to be resumed (…) and which also deserves to be known (…). [Created] by countless Portuguese authors who are too many to mention [in their entirety], here's the suggestion.”

Flávio Almeida, in BandasDesenhadas:
“Weird Corpse! is a celebration of surrealism that brings together dozens of [portuguese] authors in an exercise of collective improvisation. The work transforms narrative chaos into a coherent and delirious intrigue, functioning as a vibrant showcase of the talent of Portuguese comics. It is an “organized chaos” essential for those seeking pure creativity and experimentation outside traditional molds.”

Luís Bernardino, in Central Comics:
“It’s a very interesting book. I really liked Daniel Maia’s introduction, [which] makes reading the book a different experience right away, just like the Afterword at the end is delightful. Everything else is very cool and I found the comics very funny.
Daniel’s work in terms of coordination [is fantastic]. The truth is that it took ten years for it to be printed, but now it’s here [in book form]; if you see it, buy it, because it’s really worth it. And [furthermore], it won the [23rd] Central Comics Trophies for Best Independent Publication, with all the merit, because it’s really very funny to see that there are actually many good comic book authors [in the country], and it’s a shame that some of them aren’t doing more [work], because I would really like to see more [projects] from certain talents [featured here]. We only have 1 page of theirs here, but I would like to see many more.”

“Bem-vindos a mais uma ‘Volta do Correio’. Hoje trago-vos um novo lançamento, que me chegou às mãos há poucos dias. Trata-se de Cadáver Esquisito!, da editora Arga Warga, uma editora independente de Daniel Maia, autor e [editor], (…) [que dispensa] grandes apresentações (...).
Este Cadáver Esquisito!, tem uma premissa de que gosto muito – esta é a maior banda desenhada coletiva portuguesa. E o que é uma BD colectiva? [Pensam que se trata] de uma antologia? Não, não é bem isso. Isto é conceito criativo que acho muito giro e gosto muito destes conceitos criativos, em que se reúne um conjunto bastante grande de autores, (…) alguns mais consagrados e outros mais estreantes, em que a partir de uma página feita pelo autor anterior a eles desenvolvem depois a sua história, fazendo os seus acrescentos e colocando a sua arte ao serviço da mesma. Portanto, é algo que acho super criativo e giro.

Já foi [realizado] há uns anos, (…) feito entre 2008 e 2015, na altura em webcomic, e que agora chega ao formato físico. Tem capa mole, com brilho, com uma [ilustração] muito gira. E [o livro] finalmente disponibiliza a quem acompanhou [a iniciativa], que agora vou poder retomar a leitura, que há-de ficar mirabolante, como imaginam. Com tantas dezenas de autores a contribuir para a história, naturalmente ela vai evoluir para algo mais original. (...) Acho mm muito interessante este tipo de exercício, [que merece] retomada (…) e que merece ser conhecida (…). [Criado] por inúmeros autores portugueses que são demasiados para referir [na totalidade], aqui fica a sugestão.”

Flávio Almeida, em BandasDesenhadas:
“Cadáver Esquisito! é uma celebração do surrealismo que reúne dezenhas de autores nacionais num exercício de improviso colectivo. A obra transforma o caos narrativo numa intriga coerente e delirante, funcionando como uma montra vibrante do talento da BD portuguesa. É um “caos organizado” essencial para quem procura criatividade pura e experimentação fora dos moldes tradicionais.”

Luís Bernardino, em Central Comics:
“É um livro muito interessante. Gostei muito da introdução do Daniel Maia, [que] faz com que a leitura do livro seja feita logo de outra forma, da mesma maneira como o posfácio no final é delicioso. Tudo o resto é muito giro e achei muita piada [à banda desenhada].
O trabalho do Daniel a nível de coordenação [é fantástico]. O que é verdade é que demorou dez anos a ser impresso mas agora está aí [em livro]; se virem, comprem, porque merece mesmo a pena. E [ademais], ganhou o [23º] Troféu Central Comics de Melhor Publicação Independente, com todo o mérito, porque é realmente muito engraçado ver que afinal há muitos bons autores de banda desenhada [no país], sendo pena alguns destes não estarem a fazer mais [trabalhos], porque iria gostar muito de ver mais [projectos] de certos talentos. Aqui só temos 1 página deles, mas eu gostaria de ver muitas mais.”

97th Lisbon Book Fair | 97ª Feira do Livro de Lisboa

Next weekend, Sunday June 7th, at 3pm, I will attend the 97th Lisbon Book Fair for a book signing. Ala dos Livros publisher invited me to join writer Marco Calhorda, who will be promoting his new graphic novel CoBrA: Porto, which wraps the CoBrA trilogy. Our book, CoBrA: Operação Goa will be featured as Book of the Day, with 50% discount at the H Hour, marking the 4th anniversary of its release – don’t miss out!

Operação Goa was elected in the Ler+ program and was adapted to a Brasilian edition, and was nominated for several prestigious awards in the portuguese comics scene; namely, for Best Portuguese Graphic Novel in the 33th Amadora BD Awards, Best Portuguese Comic (runner-up), Best Portuguese Artist (runner-up), Best Portuguese Writer in the 20th Central Comics Trophies, Best Geek Graphic Novel in the 5th Geek d’Ouro Awards, Best Illustration in Portuguese Comic in the 4th Bandas Desenhadas Awards, and Best Portuguese Comic and Best Portuguese Writer in the 3rd Vinhetas d’Ouro Awards – in all, 8 nominations, which makes it the original portuguese graphic novel most featured in portuguese comics awards over the last five years.

Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One – The Moment of Sin [Another Door Comics]

Another Door Comics has released the company’s 2nd title by creator Tom Marvelli, the horror/action series Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One – The Moment of Sin, with artist Daniel Maia and colorist Renato Spiller, with additional artwork by Daniel Henriques, Ronilson Freire and Susana Resende. The book also features a backup story ‘Voices – Part 1’, by Tom Marvelli, Hernan Gonzales and Marcos António.

The book follows shortly after the limited release of the FCBD’s Apparition Metempsychosis #1, and includes a number of variant covers, namely Cover A by Maia/Spiller, Cover B by Marvelli/Spiller, Cover C by Marvelli (photo composition), a special edition Cover D by Maia/Spiller, which is limited to the fans that pledged during the Live Launch Party, and a limited edition Gold Foil Cover B, in hardcover format.
Additionally, the campaign backers will get limited prints of the covers artwork and various book markers.

Apparition Metempsychosis is the first title to expand The World of The Boy in the Bot and explores a darker side of the shared universe, mixing hardcore action with supernatural horror. The graphic novel is created by writer Tom Marvelli (The Boy in the Bot), artist Daniel Maia (X – Siege), guest inker Daniel Heniques (The Curse of Sherlee Johnson) and colorist Renato Spiller (Ben10), with addittional art by Ronilson Freire and Susana Resende.

The story follows the contrasting worlds of Michael, an extration mercenary that operates in Third World settings, and Thomas Winthrop Jr., a millionaire heir to a corporate empire. Following a rescue mission gone bad in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Michael and his partner Fabian are caught in a siege, leading to a fatality. Sometime later, in the glamorous lifestyle of New York city, Thomas Jr. likewise has his world turned on its head when he is pursued for a suspected murder. At his most desperate hour, though, after being assaulted by a misterious supernatural force, Thomas is surprised by the help of a transmigrated soul, that has the skills to endure the challenges facing him, but for which it needs to share his body…
With the natural order shattered by a desperate act, two souls are forced into one body, sharing a life neither chose and hunted by an evil entity that wants them both. As the truth unravels, so does their grip on identity – and on the sins that refuse to stay buried. Second chances come with a price. And this one may cost them everything...

Apparition Metempsychosis is a trilogy of graphic novels, with Book Two – A Place of Sin arriving in the 4th Quarter and concluding the series in early 2027.

Algum tempo depois, na vida glamorosa da cidade de Nova Iorque, o mundo de Thomas Jr. também é revirado quando este é perseguido por suspeita de homicídio. No seu momento de maior desespero, após ser atacado por uma força sobrenatural misteriosa, Thomas é surpreendido pela ajuda de uma alma transmigrada, que possui as aptidões para suportar os desafios que enfrenta, mas para o qual necessita de partilhar o seu corpo…

Com a ordem natural destruída por um ato desesperado, duas almas são forçadas a viver num só corpo, partilhando um destino que nenhuma delas escolheu e sendo caçadas por uma entidade maléfica que as deseja. À medida que a verdade se revela, também se desfaz o controlo sobre as suas identidades – e sobre os pecados que se recusam a permanecer enterrados. As segundas oportunidades têm um preço. E esta pode custar-lhes tudo…

XXIII Troféus Central Comics – Winners / Vencedores

It is with pleasure that I got the XXIII Central Comics Trophies’ results, announced at the 4th Maia BD. On the 25th anniversary of this award (it didn't happen in two years), the sole one in Portugal where comics readers and general public determine the finalists and winners, and after being nominated in 4 categories, I thank everyone for awarding me TWO trophies!
Namely, graphic novel Cadáver Esquisito! won as Best Independent Publication, and I partake in the victory of inVISIVEIS as Best Anthology. Also, ‘Eduardo Lourenço: Ficção de Si – Intro’ was the runner-up in Best Webcomic, which is something.

These awards are special because they come from great collaborations and I want to aplaude the colleagues with whom I share these awards. Once again, thank you all! And, to wrap up, check out the historical records of TCC now online.

É com prazer que recebi notícia dos resultados do XXIII Troféus Central Comics, anunciados no 4º MaiaBD. No 25º aniversário deste prémio (não se realizou em dois anos), o único no país em que são os leitores de banda desenhada e o grande público quem determina os finalistas e vencedores, e após ter sido nomeado em 4 categorias, agradeço aos votantes por me atribuírem DOIS troféus!

9º Coimbra BD – A Caneta era a Lei: Exhibit / Exposição

The 9th CoimbraBD ended three weeks ago and I’m now covering the exhibits I had on display at the event. Check out here the festival’s general showcase.

My 2nd exhibition there aimed to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Robert E. Howard, the "Father of Sword & Sorcery," creator of Conan, Solomon Kane, Red Sonya, and others. This exhibition precedes the compilation of the 20-year initiative, The Pen Was the Law – A Tribute to Robert E. Howard, which will be available in the coming weeks, featuring works by Aires Melo, Daniel Henriques, Dinis Vale, João Tiago Fernandes, Heguinil Mendes, Hugo Jesus, Nuno Sarabando, Pedro Figue, and myself.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank GuessTheChoice and C.M.Coimbra again for the invitation, and to the curator João Miguel Lameiras.

9º Coimbra BD – Apparition Metempsychosis: Exhibit / Exposição

The 9th CoimbraBD ended two weeks ago, but the memory of that fantastic festival endures. In addition to the general photos I shared previously, today I present specific photos of the first exhibition I had on display at the event.

The exhibit featured Apparition Metempsychosis, written by Tom Marvelli, with additional art by Daniel Henriques (inks) and Renato Spiller (colors). Unfortunately, printer problems delayed the distribution of the book, which is only available to readers this week. However, the pages on display served to spark readers' interest.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank GuessTheChoice and C.M.Coimbra again for the invitation, and to the curator João Miguel Lameiras.

O 9º CoimbraBD terminou há duas semanas, mas a memória daquele fantástico festival perdura. Para além das fotos gerais que partilhei anteriormente, hoje apresento fotos específicas da primeira exposição que tive patente no evento.

A mostra apresentou Apparition Metempsychosis, escrito por Tom Marvelli e com arte adicional de Daniel Henriques (arte-final) e Renato Spiller (cores). Infelizmente, problemas na impressão atrasaram a distribuição do livro, que só esta semana está disponível aos leitores. Todavia, as páginas expostas serviram para despertar o interesse dos leitores.
