Apparition: Metempsychosis – Presentation / Apresentação

Following the presentation at CoimbraBD, author Tom Marvelli has lift the veil regarding Another Door Comics’ 2nd project, Apparition: Metempsychosis. Taking place in the shared universe created by Marvelli, this second title was originally written nearly thirty years ago and will debut the World of the Boy in the Bot spin-offs, with a couple other titles already in development to follow.

When a fallen special forces operative awakens in another man’s body, at the brink of a horrific act, two sould collide – one seeking redemption, the other vengeance. As reality fractures and a dark force hunts them both, their shared body becomes the battleground for identity, morality and the cost of second chances, where the line between man and monster blurs – and only one sould can survive.

Apparition: Metempsychosis is a gripping supernatural thriller in three volumes, written by Tom Marvelli, illustrated by Daniel Maia and colored by Ren Spiller, with vol.1 to be released later this year.

 

Após a apresentação no CoimbraBD, o autor Tom Marvelli levantou o véu sobre o segundo projeto da Another Door Comics, de título Apparition: Metempsychosis. Com acção no universo ficcional criado por Marvelli, este segundo título foi originalmente escrito há quase trinta anos e estreará os spin-offs World of the Boy in the Bot, com alguns outros títulos já em desenvolvimento.

Quando um agente das forças especiais morto em combate desperta no corpo de outro homem, à beira de um acto horrível, duas almas colidem: uma em busca de redenção, a outra de vingança. À medida que a realidade se fragmenta e uma força obscura os persegue, o corpo partilhado torna-se campo de batalha pela identidade, pela moralidade e pelo custo de segundas oportunidades, onde a linha entre o homem e o monstro se esbate — e apenas uma alma pode sobreviver.

Apparition: Metempsychosis é um emocionante thriller sobrenatural em três volumes, escrito por Tom Marvelli, ilustrado por Daniel Maia e colorido por Ren Spiller, com o vol1 a ser lançado mais tarde este ano.

20º FIBDB / Beja International Comics Festival

The poster for the 20th FIBDB/Beja International Comics Festival has been announced, celebrating the 2nd decade of this important event in the Portuguese comics scene, also the largest event in the field that takes place in Portugal’s south. Defined by exhibitions, presentations of projects and new developments, a book market and autograph sessions, the festival promoted by Beja City through the Beja Comics Library and coordinated by the dir. Paulo Monteiro, this year it takes place between May 30th and June 15th.

FIBDB opens on 5/30 at 9pm at Casa da Cultura, stage for twenty individual and collective exhibitions. There will be 18 Portuguese and foreign authors attending, plus three collectivities. The full program will be available soon.
This year I return to ‘BejaBD with a small collective exhibition regarding Cadáver Esquisito!/Weird Corpse!, which marks ten years since its completion and is still the largest collective comic in Portugal. The project began in 2007 in webcomic format and will be released in book form, through my editorial seal Arga Warga.

Foi anunciado o cartaz do 20º FIBDB/Festival Internacional de Banda Desenhada de Beja, que celebra a 2ª década deste importante certame do panorama da BD portuguesa, também o maior evento da área que decorre no sul do país. Pautado por exposições, apresentações de projectos e de novidades, por mercado do livro e sessões de autógrafos, o festival promovido pela C. M. de Beja através da Bedeteca de Beja e coordenado pelo dir. Paulo Monteiro, este ano decorre entre 30 de Maio e 15 de Junho.

O FIBDB inaugura a 30/5 às 21h na Casa da Cultura, palco de vinte mostras, individuais e colectivas. Vão estar presentes 18 autores portugueses e internacionais, mais três colectivos. O programa vai estar disponível em breve.
Este ano regresso ao ‘BejaBD com uma pequena exposição colectiva alusiva a Cadáver Esquisito!, que marca dez anos desde a sua conclusão e ainda é a maior BD colectiva realizada em Portugal. O projecto teve início em 2007 em formato webcomic e vai ser publicado em livro, com selo da minha chancela Arga Warga.

Fernando Pessoa in Comics – A study / Fernando Pessoa na Banda Desenhada – Um estudo

2025 will mark the 90th anniversary of the death of the timeless and enigmatic Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. One of the most cherished and world-renowned modern writers, Pessoa left a cultural legacy that marked Portugal, not only for the quality and depth of his thoughts, but also for the idiosyncrasies of his creative process, characterized by fragmentation into several literary selves or heteronyms. With only one book published in his lifetime, and even that due to unusual circumstances, Pessoa's bibliography continues to be studied and discovered, and there is still much to reveal.

Given the enormity of his figure, some of his works soon echoed in other areas of creation, in adaptations and derivations, to which comics are no stranger.
In 2024, I completed a study started by Geraldes Lino (1936-2019) in Ónima – Heterónimos Pessoanos (2012), in which I indicate 14 comic books based on Pessoa’s work or featuring himself, which was released in an afterword in Quaresma, o Decifrador – A Morte de Dom João. That investigation was also presented in magazine Bang! #37, and the year certainly wont end without new editions rounding off this sum.

2025 vai marcar os 90 anos do falecimento do intemporal e enigmático poeta português Fernando Pessoa. Dos mais renomados e mundialmente conhecidos escritores modernos, Pessoa deixou uma herança cultural que marcou o país, não só pela qualidade e profundidade do seu pensamento, mas também nas idiossincracias do seu processo criativo, caracterizado por fragmentação em vários Eus literários ou heterónimos. Com apenas um livro publicado em vida, e mesmo esse por força de circunstâncias anormais, a blibliografia de Pessoa continua a ser estudada e descoberta, havendo ainda muito por revelar.

Atendendo à enormidade da sua figura, desde cedo que algumas das suas obras ecoaram noutras áreas da criação, em adaptações e derivações, ao que a banda desenhada não é alheia.
Em 2024, completei um estudo iniciado por Geraldes Lino (1936-2019) em Ónima – Heterónimos Pessoanos (2012), no qual indico 14 obras de BD criadas sobre a sua obra ou figurando o próprio, que foi publicada em posfácio em Quaresma, o Decifrador – A Morte de Dom João. Essa investigação foi igualmente publicada na revista Bang! #37, e decerto o ano não termina sem novas edições arredondarem esta soma.

CoBrA: Operação Goa [Quadriculando]

The publisher Quadriculando recently released the Brazilian version of CoBrA: Operation Goa, with a script by Marco Calhorda and drawings/design by Daniel Maia.
Originally published by Ala dos Livros in 2022, this collection of graphic novels about the history of Portugal in the 60s-70s, is composed of isolated books that have in common espionage and war themes, involving the secret agency CoBrA created by Eng. Jorge Jardim. In 2024 and 2025, CoBrA: Operation Conacri was published in Portugal, with drawings by Zoran Jovicic (Part 1) and Osvaldo Medina (Part 2).

In CoBrA: Operation Goa, the enigmatic Eng. Jorge Jardim, a controversial secret agent of the New State, is called to operate in India, following the attack by the Indian Union in December 1961, which caused Portugal to lose its colony of Goa, a Portuguese overseas territory for 450 years.
Against the wishes of President António Salazar, who famously demanded “only victorious or dead soldiers” in order to gain an advantage over the UN and regain the territory, and facing the enormous menace of the Indian empire, Jorge Jardim engineered clandestine operations in order to secure the release of 4,000 Portuguese soldiers who had been held for months in prison camps in precarious conditions.

This edition includes the 56 pages of the comic and extra content, such as an afterword and a gallery of sketches and illustrations.

Publicado originalmente pela Ala dos Livros em 2022, esta colecção de álbuns sobre a história de Portugal nos anos 60-70, é composta por livros isolados que têm em comum aventuras de espionagem e guerra, que envolvem a agência secreta CoBrA criada pelo Eng. Jorge Jardim. Em 2024 e 2025 foram publicados em Portugal CoBrA: Operação Conacri, com desenho de Zoran Jovicic (Parte 1) e Osvaldo Medina (Parte 2).

Em CoBrA: Operação Goa, o enigmático Eng. Jorge Jardim, controverso agente secreto do Estado Novo, é chamado a operar na Índia, na sequência do ataque pela União Indiana em Dezembro de 1961, que fez Portugal perder a colónia de Goa, território ultramarino português desde há 450 anos.
Contra a vontade do Presidente António Salazar, que famosamente exigiu “apenas soldados vitoriosos ou mortos”, por forma a obter vantagem perante a ONU e reaver o território, e enfrentando a enorme influência do império Indiano, Jorge Jardim engendrou operações clandestinas de forma a garantir a libertação de 4 mil soldados portugueses detidos durante meses em campos de prisioneiros, em condições precárias.

Esta edição inclui as 56 páginas de BD e conteúdos extra, como posfácio e galeria de esboços e ilustrações.

Bang! #37 [Saída de Emergência Edições]

Magazine Bang! #37 was presented last week in the Fnac Colombo auditorium. A quarterly title dedicated to Portuguese editions of fantasy, horror, science fiction and also comics, it is distributed for free in Fnac megastores and published by Edições Saída de Emergência.

In this issue, I collaborate for the first time in the magazine with a summarized version of the research article “Fernando Pessoa in Comics”, which I originally released in graphic novel Quaresma, The Decipherer: The Death of Don John (Kustom Rats). In this investigation, I trace a chronology of comic book adaptations of Pessoa's works or works that feature him as a character, in worldwide terms, concluding with the upcoming book O Desassossegado Sr. Pessoa, which makes up the 15th work on this list.

A revista Bang! #37 foi apresentada na passada semana no auditório da Fnac Colombo. Título trimestral dedicado a edições portuguesas de fantasia, horror, ficção científica e também banda desenhada, tem distribuição gratuita nas lojas Fnac e publicação por Edições Saída de Emergência.
Neste número, colaboro pela primeira vez na revista com uma versão resumida do artigo de investigação “Fernando Pessoa em Banda Desenhada”, que publiquei originalmente no álbum Quaresma, o Decifrador: A Morte de Dom João (Kustom Rats). Nesta investigação, traço uma cronologia de adaptações para BD das obras de Pessoa ou que o figuram como personagem, a nível mundial, concluindo com o vindouro livro O Desassossegado Sr. Pessoa, que perfaz a 15ª obra desta lista.

The 22nd Trophies Central Comics has kicked off the final vote to determine the “best of the best” books and authors published in Portugal in 2024. Readers and the general public can now vote for their favorites, and help celebrate the best comics created in the country.

1st Camões Comics and Animation Festival | 1º Festival de BD e Animação Camões

Camões Secondary School (Lisbon) held this week the 1st Camões Comics and Animation Festival, coordinated by teachers António Sales, Elsa Costa and Filipe Duarte, with a short program that aims to introduce young students to the world of comics. The lineup invited authors Daniel Maia (myself) and Rita Alfaiate for a comic book presentation and workshop, respectively, plus a comics competition.

For my part, I had the opportunity to speak briefly about the fundamental concepts of comic book creation and my own practice, using as an example the production of graphic novel CoBrA: Operation Goa (Ala dos Livros), and I also spoke about the international industry, with reference to project The Boy in the Bot.

A Escola Secundária Camões (Lisboa) promoveu esta semana o 1º Festival de BD e Animação Camões, coordenado pelos professores António Sales, Elsa Costa e Filipe Duarte, com um breve programa que visa introduzir os jovens alunos no mundo da banda desenhada. O programa convidou os autores Daniel Maia (eu próprio) e Rita Alfaiate para uma apresentação de BD e workshop, respectivamente, mais um concurso.

Pela minha parte, tive a oportunidade de falar brevemente sobre os conceitos fundamentais de criação de BD e a minha própria prática, usando como exemplo a produção do álbum CoBrA: Operação Goa (Ala dos Livros), e falei ainda sobre a indústria internacional, com referência ao projecto The Boy in the Bot.

JuveBêDê #100 [Associação Juvemedia]

The JuveBêDê #100 magazine was presented at the 6th CoimbraBD, thus marking an unusual feat for the magazine in the Portuguese publishing scene, on the same date that marks the 28th anniversary of the Juvemedia Association project.
With a cover by Luís Louro, the edition was marked by 43 drawings commemorating the 100th issue, by Portuguese authors and artists from Spain, France, Italy and Brazil. For my part, I partook with a previously unpublished digital work that I retouched for this purpose.

A revista JuveBêDê #100 foi apresentada no 6º CoimbraBD, marcando assim um feito incomum do título no panorama editorial português, na mesma data que se celebra o 28º aniversário do projecto da Associação Juvemedia.
Com capa de Luís Louro, a edição foi marcada por 43 desenhos comemorativos do 100º número, por autores portugueses e de Espanha, França, Itália e Brasil. Pela minha parte, marquei presença com uma arte digital inédita que retoquei para este propósito.

6º CoimbraBD - Photos / Fotos

The 6th CoimbraBD comics festival took place at Convento S. Francisco last weekend and it was an amazing event, easily ranking among the top 5 pop culture conventions in Portugal. My thanks to the promoters for having invited me and to the fans who stopped by my table.
As always, I had little chance to check out the event, having arrived just in time to setup my table at Artists’ Alley and head out for my presentation, concerning Another Door Comics projects to which I’m working for, such as Apparition Metempsychosis.

During the afternoon I signed many books, sold prints and original artworks, and had the chance to let the fans know about the projects I have been working on. Plus, here and there, I got to chat a bit with fellow artists and old colleagues. Overall, it was an exaustive but awesome day!

O 6º CoimbraBD decorreu no Convento S. Francisco no passado fim-de-semana e confirmou-se como um evento incrível, facilmente classificado entre as 5 principais convenções de cultura pop em Portugal. O meu agradecimento aos promotores por me terem convidado e aos fãs que passaram pela minha mesa.
Como sempre, tive pouca oportunidade de experienciar o evento, tendo chegado a tempo apenas de montar a minha mesa no Artists’ Alley e de seguir para a minha apresentação sobre os projetos da Another Door Comics em que estou a trabalhar, como Apparition Metempsychosis.

Durante a tarde, autografei vários livros, vendi prints e trabalhos originais, e tive a oportunidade de contar aos fãs sobre os projetos em que tenho estado a trabalhar. Além disso, aqui e ali, consegui conversar um pouco com outros artistas e antigos colegas. No geral, foi um dia exaustivo, mas recompensador!

6º Coimbra BD

6th CoimbraBD, the largest comics festival in the center of Portugal, opens its doors in Convento S. Francisco this weekend. The program for the inauguration on April 25th to 27th was recently announced, and with that my first time participation in the event was also spotlighted.
On April 26th, at 11:30am, I will present my new project, Apparition Metempsychosis, the next trilogy by Tom Marvelli and his publisher Another Door Comics, for which I have collaborated on The Boy in the Bot. Although the first book will only be released in the last quarter, come by for this first glimpse of the work.

During the afternoon, I will also be at the artists' area, available for book signings and chat.

Este fim de semana decorre o 6º CoimbraBD, o maior festival de banda desenhada no centro do país, com lugar no Convento S. Francisco. Foi recentemente divulgado o programa da inauguração nos dias 25 a 27 de Abril, e com isso foi igualmente indicada a minha participação no evento, pela primeira vez.
No dia 26, às 11h30, vou apresentar o meu novo projecto, Apparition Metempsychosis, a próxima trilogia de Tom Marvelli e da sua editora Another Door Comics, para a qual tenho colaborado em The Boy in the Bot. Embora o primeiro volume só vá ser publicado no último trimestre, apareçam para este primeiro vislumbre do trabalho.

Durante a tarde, vou igualmente estar presente na área de artistas, disponível para autógrafos e conversa.
