The Center for Iberian Studies (CEI), in Guarda, will celebrate its 25th anniversary with conferences, theater, exhibitions, literature, visual arts, photography, and enology, in a program that extends to 2028, dedicated to the memory of Eduardo Lourenço, entitled ‘Eduardo Lourenço returns Home’.

The Center for Iberian Studies has been fundamental and an important bridge in connecting the territory, between Guarda, Coimbra, and Salamanca, but also through its higher education institutions. The CEI is the result of a challenge launched by the essayist Eduardo Lourenço (1923-2020), at the solemn session of the 800th anniversary of the charter of Guarda, on November 27, 1999. On that occasion, the thinker said he hoped that the project would contribute “not only to a renewed knowledge of the various cultures of the Peninsula, but to the study of Iberian Civilization as a whole”.

Presented at the Eduardo Lourenço Municipal Library in Guarda, the CEI's 25th anniversary program is also a tribute to the work of Eduardo Lourenço, one of the most important figures in contemporary Portuguese thought. Hélder Sequeira, a researcher of regional historiography and head of service in the municipality, is the commissioner of the commemorations.
Among the activities, there is a planned exhibition of the comic book Eduardo Lourenço: Fiction of Self – Intro, by Diogo Figueira and Sabrina D. Marques (script), with Daniel Maia (art) and Susana Resende (color), which opens in September. The graphic novel project about the thinker will also be previewed, with a contribution of the writer Gonçalo M. Tavares.

O Centro de Estudos Ibéricos (CEI), na Guarda, vai comemorar os 25 anos da fundação com conferências, exposições, literatura, teatro, artes visuais, fotografia e enologia, numa programação que se estende até 2028, dedicadas à memória de Eduardo Lourenço, designadas por ‘Eduardo Lourenço regressa a Casa’.

O Centro de Estudos Ibéricos tem sido fundamental e uma ponte importante na ligação do território, entre a Guarda, Coimbra e Salamanca, mas também, através das suas instituições de ensino superior. O CEI resulta de um desafio lançado pelo ensaísta Eduardo Lourenço (1923-2020), na sessão solene dos 800 anos do foral da Guarda, em 27 de novembro de 1999. Na altura, o pensador disse esperar que o projeto contribuísse “não apenas para um renovado conhecimento das diversas culturas da Península, mas para o estudo da Civilização Ibérica como um todo”.

Apresentada na Biblioteca Municipal Eduardo Lourenço, na Guarda, a programação dos 25 anos do CEI é também uma homenagem à obra de Eduardo Lourenço, uma das figuras mais importantes do pensamento português contemporâneo. Hélder Sequeira, investigador da historiografia regional e chefe de serviço no município, é o comissário das comemorações.
Entre as actividades, está prevista uma exposição de pranchas da banda desenhada Eduardo Lourenço: Ficção de Si – Intro, por Diogo Figueira e Sabrina D. Marques (arg.), com Daniel Maia (arte) e Susana Resende (cor), que inaugura em Setembro. Será ainda antecipado o projecto de romance gráfico sobre o pensador, com o contributo do escritor Gonçalo M. Tavares.

28th Balkans Festival of Young Comics Creators | 28th Festival Balcânico de Jovens Criadores de BD

Between June 26–28, the 28th Balkans Festival of Young Comics Creators will host an exhibition of Portuguese talents, coordinated by Paulo Monteiro, director of the Beja Comics Library, and I am pleased to once again be part of a Portuguese delegation, following previous occasions in the People's Republic of China, in 2007, and in Belgium, in 2020.

The festival takes place in Leskovac, Serbia, and unites the world's sequential art with the rich heritage of the Balkans, which continues to bring together artists from all over the world. After the 2025 edition, which highlighted over 3170 talents from 52 countries, the event aims to reach even higher levels this year.

Organizada pela Bedeteca de Beja, a mostra 'Um Olhar à BD Portuguesa Contemporânea' inclui 50 autores, abarcando uma série de temáticas e de estilos, da fantasia à ficção científica, do humor ao terror, da ficção histórica ao policia, do manga ao indie. A presença de Paulo Monteiro na Sérvia é complementada por uma bagagem de obras publicadas, que pontificam a exposição.

 

Entre 26–28 de Junho, o 28º Festival Balcânico de Jovens Criadores de Banda Desenhada, recebe uma exposição de talentos portugueses, com coordenação de Paulo Monteiro, director da Bedeteca de Beja, e tenho o prazer de voltar a integrar uma comitiva lusitana, após as anteriores ocasiões na R. P. da China, em 2007, e na Bélgica, em 2020.
O festival tem lugar em Leskovac, na Sérvia, e une a arte sequencial mundial à rica herança dos Balcãs, que continua a reunir artistas de todo o mundo. Após a edição de 2025, que destacou +3170 talentos, de 52 países, o evento ambiciona alcançar patamares mais elevados este ano.

Organized by Beja's Comics Library, the exhibition 'A Look at Contemporary Portuguese Comics' includes 50 authors, encompassing a range of themes and styles, from fantasy to science fiction, from humor to horror, from historical fiction to crime, from manga to indie. Paulo Monteiro's presence in Serbia is complemented by a wealth of published works, which are highlighted in the exhibition.

H-Alt: Ten years Exhibition / Exposição de Dez Anos

The Portuguese comics anthology, H-Alt, conceived and coordinated by Sérgio Santos, celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2025. The title has now marked this decade of existence through a collective exhibition at the 21st Beja International Comics Festival, on display at the city's Cultural Center.
The exhibition features several sequential art pages by various authors who have contributed to the magazine, as well as the fifteen issues published to date – including issue 12, for which I provided the cover artwork and an illustrated interview.

 

 

A antologia portuguesa de banda desenhada, H-Alt, idealizada e coordenada por Sérgio Santos, comemorou dez anos em 2025. O título marcou agora essa década de existência através de uma exposição colectiva no 21º Festival Internacional de BD de Beja, patente na Casa da Cultural da cidade.
Na mostra, é possível ver várias pranchas de arte sequencial por diversos autores que passaram pela revista, assim como os quinze números publicados até hoje – entre os quais figura o #12, em que assino a capa e uma entrevista ilustrada.

9º Coimbra BD – A Caneta era a Lei: Exhibit / Exposição

The 9th CoimbraBD ended three weeks ago and I’m now covering the exhibits I had on display at the event. Check out here the festival’s general showcase.

My 2nd exhibition there aimed to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Robert E. Howard, the "Father of Sword & Sorcery," creator of Conan, Solomon Kane, Red Sonya, and others. This exhibition precedes the compilation of the 20-year initiative, The Pen Was the Law – A Tribute to Robert E. Howard, which will be available in the coming weeks, featuring works by Aires Melo, Daniel Henriques, Dinis Vale, João Tiago Fernandes, Heguinil Mendes, Hugo Jesus, Nuno Sarabando, Pedro Figue, and myself.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank GuessTheChoice and C.M.Coimbra again for the invitation, and to the curator João Miguel Lameiras.

9º Coimbra BD – Apparition Metempsychosis: Exhibit / Exposição

The 9th CoimbraBD ended two weeks ago, but the memory of that fantastic festival endures. In addition to the general photos I shared previously, today I present specific photos of the first exhibition I had on display at the event.

The exhibit featured Apparition Metempsychosis, written by Tom Marvelli, with additional art by Daniel Henriques (inks) and Renato Spiller (colors). Unfortunately, printer problems delayed the distribution of the book, which is only available to readers this week. However, the pages on display served to spark readers' interest.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank GuessTheChoice and C.M.Coimbra again for the invitation, and to the curator João Miguel Lameiras.

O 9º CoimbraBD terminou há duas semanas, mas a memória daquele fantástico festival perdura. Para além das fotos gerais que partilhei anteriormente, hoje apresento fotos específicas da primeira exposição que tive patente no evento.

A mostra apresentou Apparition Metempsychosis, escrito por Tom Marvelli e com arte adicional de Daniel Henriques (arte-final) e Renato Spiller (cores). Infelizmente, problemas na impressão atrasaram a distribuição do livro, que só esta semana está disponível aos leitores. Todavia, as páginas expostas serviram para despertar o interesse dos leitores.

9º Coimbra BD – Photos / Fotos

O 9º Coimbra BD decorreu no passado fim de semana, no Convento de São Francisco, com organização pela GuessTheChoice e Câmara Municipal de Coimbra. Como autor da imagem oficial do evento deste ano, usufruí de um destaque especial e indico de seguida essas actividades.

Integradas nas mostras do festival, marquei presença com as exposições de Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One, por Tom Marvelli, com arte minha e de Daniel Henriques, e cor de Renato Spiller; e de A Caneta era a Lei – Tributo a Robert E. Howard, que celebra o 120º aniversário do Pai da Espada & Feitiçaria, com artes de Aires Melo, Daniel Henriques, Dinis Vale, Heguinil Mendes, Nuno Sarabando e Pedro Figue, e dos escritores Hugo Jesus, João Tiago Fernandes e eu próprio.

A nível de programa, no Domingo, 26 de Abril, apresentei Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One – The Moment of Sin e antecipei o 2º volume, actualmente em produção. A apresentação contou com a Susana Resende, colorista assistente da obra. De seguida, apresentei ‘Fernando Pessoa em Banda Desenhada’, a investigação iniciada em 2024, que agora é actualizada com os novos livros criados nos últimos anos e que culmina com a antologia Pessoa Fragmentado, do grupo TàgIIde, publicada há seis meses.

De resto, para além de marcar presença nas mesas de autógrafos, localizadas na convertida Igreja, também colaborei com a iniciativa da Prado Papel na criação de um mural de desenho ao vivo, que visou celebrar um dos principais anos da BD mundial, 1986, que viu publicadas obras seminais como The Dark Knight Returns, The Watchmen, Maus, Dylan Dog, mais as séries Superman (reboot) e DareDevil: Born Again.

Aproveito para agradecer a todos os leitores e fãs que me visitaram no evento e aos colegas com que pude partilhar o evento. Foi um fim de semana de partilha de afinidades e de divertimento, sem qualquer dúvida.
O CoimbraBD realizou um evento de grande dinamismo e muito frequentado – literalmente, não houve “horas mortas”, tendo o local sido visitado por jovens estudantes, crianças e famílias, e até por vetustos coleccionadores. Uma aposta ganha, que a Presidente Dra Ana Abrunhosa já fez saber vai ser reforçada mais ainda em 2027!

The 9th Coimbra BD took place last weekend at the Convent of São Francisco, promoted by company GuessTheChoice and Coimbra City Hall. As the author of the official image for this year's event, I enjoyed a special spotlight, and below I cover those activities.
Integrated into the festival's exhibitions, I attended with exhibitions of Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One, by Tom Marvelli, with art by myself and Daniel Henriques, and colors by Renato Spiller; and A Caneta era a Lei – Tributo a Robert E. Howard, which celebrates the 120th anniversary of the Father of Sword & Sorcery, with art by Aires Melo, Daniel Henriques, Dinis Vale, Heguinil Mendes, Nuno Sarabando and Pedro Figue, and the writers Hugo Jesus, João Tiago Fernandes and myself.

In terms of the program, on Sunday, April 26, I presented Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One – The Moment of Sin and previewed the 2nd volume, currently in production. The presentation featured Susana Resende, assistant colorist of the book. Next, I presented ‘Fernando Pessoa in Comics’, a study I started in 2024, which is now updated with new books created in recent years and culminates with the anthology Pessoa Fragmentado, by the TàgIIde group, published six months ago, which was presented at the event.

Furthermore, in addition to attending the autograph sessions, located in the converted church, I also collaborated with Prado Papel's initiative in creating a live drawing mural, which aimed to celebrate one of the most important years in world comics, 1986, which saw the publication of seminal works such as The Dark Knight Returns, The Watchmen, Maus, Dylan Dog, plus Superman (reboot) and Daredevil: Born Again.

I would like to thank all the readers and fans who visited me at the event and the colleagues with whom I was able to share the event. It was a weekend of shared affinities and fun, without a doubt.
CoimbraBD held a very dynamic and well-attended event – ​​literally, there were no downtime, with the venue being visited by young students, children, families, and even veteran collectors. A winning bet, which President Dr. Ana Abrunhosa has already announced will be further reinforced in 2027!

9º Coimbra BD

The City of Coimbra, in partnership with GuesTheChoice, recently announced the 9th Coimbra BD, the comics and pop culture festival that has been held in the City of Loves since 2018.
After surpassing the +18,000 visitors mark last year, the event returns to the Convent of São Francisco between April 24-26, where visitors can enjoy a varied program, including exhibitions, book fairs, autograph sessions, interaction with artists, RPG and Cosplay contests, workshops, plus presentations and discussion panels. This year I was invited as the spotlight Portuguese author, illustrating the official poster’s image, which features the hero Infante Portugal, created by José de Matos-Cruz in a literary trilogy, and with whom I adapted it into a comic book in 2017. As the main protagonist in Matos-Cruz's fictional universe, the character was developed in twenty publications since 2004, including prose books, chapbooks, comics and anthologies, having been originally conceptualized by the master José Garcês, from whom I inherited the hero’s graphic torch.

In addition to attending the festival for autographs and at the Artist's Alley, I will be promoting the release of Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One – The Moment of Sin, from Another Door Comics, by Thomas Marvelli, and also launching A Caneta era a Lei – Tributo a Robert E. Howard, by Arga Warga Edições, an anthology by a talented group of Portuguese and PALOP artists, celebrating the 120th anniversary of the birth of the "Father of Sword and Sorcery".

The entry is free and the festival takes place between 10am-8pm. See you in Coimbra!

A Câmara Municipal de Coimbra, em parceria com a empresa GuesTheChoice, anunciou recentemente o 9º Coimbra BD, o festival de banda desenhada e cultura pop, que decorre na Cidade dos Amores desde 2018.
Depois de ultrapassar os +18,000 visitantes no ano passado, o evento regressa ao Convento de São Francisco entre 24-26 de Abril, onde os visitantes podem desfrutar de uma programação variada, como exposições, feiras de livro, autógrafos, interação com artistas, concursos de RPG e Cosplay, workshops, mais apresentações e colóquios. Este ano fui convidado como autor português em destaque, ilustrando a imagem do cartaz oficial, na qual figura o herói Infante Portugal, criado por José de Matos-Cruz em trilogia literária e com quem o adaptei para BD em 2017. A personagem protagoniza o universo ficcional de Matos-Cruz, desenvolvido em vinte publicações desde 2004, entre livros de prosa, livros de cordel, revistas e álbuns antológicos, tendo sido originalmente conceptualizado pelo mestre José Garcês, de quem herdei o testemunho gráfico do herói.

6ª Avenida Marginal – Exhibition / Exposição

The collective exhibition of the 6th Avenida Marginal international comics competition, held triennially by the Tentáculo Association, is held until May 16th at the Amadora Comics Library gallery. Admission is free.
The competition consists of self-concluding sequential pages (i.e. 1 page comics) and brings together submitted original works and also rescued from the ACBD initiative, also promoted by Tentáculo. Started in 2009, it has participants from the European, African and American continents, with varied styles and approaches. The winner of this 6th prize was the portuguese artist Hugo Maciel.

My participation in the competition stems from the story written for ACBD, 'The Sound of Silence', in 2023, which then broke the record for entries with thirteen interpretations, and the organization selected the page drawn by Pedro Nascimento as finalist.

A exposição colectiva do 6º concurso internacional de banda desenhada Avenida Marginal, promovido trienalmente pela Associação Tentáculo, está patente até 16 de Maio na galeria da Bedeteca da Amadora. A entrada é livre.
O concurso é composto por definido por pranchas sequenciais autoconclusivas (ou seja, 1 página de BD) e reúne trabalhos originais submetidos e ainda resgatados da iniciativa ACBD, também promovida pela Tentáculo. Iniciado em 2009, conta com participações dos continentes europeu, africano e americano, com estilos e abordagens variadas. O vencedor deste 6º prémio foi o artista Hugo Maciel.

A minha participação no concurso deriva da história escrita para a ACBD, ‘O Som do Silêncio’, em 2023, que então bateu o recorde de participações com treze interpretações em BD, tendo a organização seleccionado a página desenhada por Pedro Nascimento para eleger como finalista.

2025 Events – Photos / Eventos de 2025 – Fotos

This year marked the most attendances I had at comics festivals and book fairs. For unavoidable reasons I failed a couple of them, but without a doubt I put myself out there more than I ever did in one year – here’s a photographic rundown…

Este ano marcou o recorde de presenças que fiz em festivais de BD e em feiras de Livro. Por motivos de força maior falhei um par de eventos, mas sem dúvida foi o ano em que mais me expus ao público – aqui fica o rescaldo fotográfico…

The activities began in April, with a brief attendance for book signing at Barreiro IlustraBD and with my first appearance on Rádio Movimento Online, on the program ‘Fernando Pessoa para Todas as Pessoas’ (Fernando Pessoa for All People), hosted by specialist Ricardo Belo de Morais, where we discussed my ‘2024 investigation article “Fernando Pessoa in Comics”, published in Quaresma, the Decipherer. Also in April, I debuted at the CoimbraBD festival, where I presented the graphic novel The Boy in the Bot, by Another Door Comics, and also previewed Apparition Metempsychosis.

As actividades começaram em Abril, com uma breve presença para autógrafos no Barreiro IlustraBD e a primeira participação na Rádio Movimento Online, no programa ‘Fernado Pessoa para Todas as Pessoas’, do especialista Ricardo Belo de Morais, em que conversámos sobre o artigo de investigação de 2024, “Fernando Pessoa em Banda Desenhada”, que publiquei em Quaresma, o Decifrador. Ainda em Abril, estreei-me no festival CoimbraBD, em que apresentei o álbum The Boy in the Bot, de Another Door Comics, anunciando também Apparition Metempsychosis.

Closing out the month, I gave a creative demonstration at the 1st Camões Comics and Animation Festival, at the Camões High School, using the books CoBrA: Operação Goa and The Boy in the Bot as examples.
A fechar o mês, fiz demonstração criativa no 1º Festival de BD e Animação Camões, na Escola Secundária de Camões, usando como exemplo os trabalhos CoBrA: Operação Goa e The Boy in the Bot.

In May, I made my debut at MaiaBD festival, where I participated in the collective exhibition ‘Operation: CoBrA’ and presentation of the new CoBrA: Operation Conacri 2, by Marco Calhorda and Osvaldo Medina.
Em Maio, fiz a minha estreia no festival MaiaBD, em que participei na expo colectiva ‘Operação: CoBrA’ e na apresentação da novidade CoBrA: Operação Conacri 2, por Marco Calhorda e Osvaldo Medina.

Then, in June, I attended FIBDB, where I announced the book Cadáver Esquisito!, which was part of the festival's program with a collective exhibition. Also that month, I returned to the Lisbon Book Fair for a book signing session at the Ala dos Livros stand.

E logo a seguir, em Junho, passei no FIBDB, em que anunciei o livro Cadáver Esquisito!, que fez parte do programa do festival com exposição colectiva. Também neste mês, regressei à Feira do Livro de Lisboa para sessão de autógrafos no stand Ala dos Livros.

To close out the summer, I participated for the first time in the Colina das Artes event, which hosted its first Comic Book Market, located in Santa Clara Market (Lisbon), where I signed autographs. And I had an artwork included in the collective exhibition ‘2nd JuveBêDê Exhibition – Drawn Autographs’, at Montemor-O-Novo Municipal Gallery.

A encerrar o verão, participei pela primeira vez no certame Colina das Artes, que acolheu um primeiro Mercado de BD, situado no Mercado de Santa Clara (Lisboa), em que realizei autógrafos. E tive um trabalho integrado na mostra colectiva ‘2ª Exposição JuveBêDê – Autógrafos Desenhados’, na Galeria Municipal de Montemor-O-Novo.

In the final stretch of the year, my activities were varied. It all started in October with the AmadoraBD festival, where I launched the book Cadáver Esquisito! and the anthologies inVISÍVEIS and Pessoa Fragmentado: Antologia, as well as holding a book signing session.

Na recta final do ano, as actividades foram variadas. Começam em Outubro, com o festival AmadoraBD, em que lancei o álbum Cadáver Esquisito! e as antologias inVISÍVEIS e Pessoa Fragmentado: Antologia, assim como realizei sessão de autógrafos.

In November, as part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the José de Matos-Cruz Comic Book Library (Cascais), I participated in the colloquium ‘Talks with… Daniel Maia’ at the São Domingos de Rana Municipal Library, speaking about two different comics projects – Cadáver Esquisito! and Apparition Metempsychosis. I also participated in new presentations of inVISÍVEIS at the Verney Municipal Gallery (Oeiras) and at Fnac Alfragide, along with the authors Hugo Pinto, Luís Louro, and Osvaldo Medina.

Em Novembro, inserido na celebração do 10º aniversário da Bedeteca José de Matos-Cruz (Cascais), fiz o colóquio ‘À Conversa com… Daniel Maia’, na Biblioteca Municipal de São Domingos de Rana, falando ali sobre dois projectos diferentes de banda desenhada – Cadáver Esquisito! e Apparition Metempsychosis. E participei em novas apresentações de inVISÍVEIS, na Galeria Municipal Verney (Oeiras) e na Fnac Alfragide, junto com os autores Hugo Pinto, Luís Louro e Osvaldo Medina.

Finally, to close out the year, I had the opportunity to participate for the first time in Beja Horrível, also to talk about Cadáver Esquisito!

And although it's not exactly an event, the months of November and December were marked by several promotional activities for the Kickstarter campaign for Apparition Metempsychosis, including a Live Launch Party on YouTube, with the AtoGeekz channel, and later with Live Drawing Streams on Instagram.

E, embora não seja propriamente um evento, os meses de Novembro e Dezembro foram marcados por várias actividades promocionais da campanha Kickstarter para Apparition Metempsychosis, pautada por uma Live Launch Party no YouTube, com o canal AtoGeekz, e depois Live Streamings de Desenho ao Vivo, no Instagram.
