The Boy in the Bot #1 – WIP / Diário de Produção

With the work out a year and half ago, it’s actually been two years since I drew this prologue sequence for Another Door Comics’ first graphic novel release. The Boy in the Bot was creator-publisher Tom Marvelli’s first edition and features the artistic team of Rafael Loureiro, Leo Rodrigues and Renato Spiller, having been published in graphic novel format and a sketchcover comic of issue 1.

Com o trabalho publicado há ano e meio, na realidade já se passaram dois anos desde que desenhei esta sequência de prólogo para a primeira edição da Another Door Comics. The Boy in the Bot foi a primeira obra do criador e editor Tom Marvelli e conta com a equipa artística de Rafael Loureiro, Leo Rodrigues e Renato Spiller, tendo sido publicada em formato de novela gráfica e em comic com sketchcover do nr.1.

I began by doing layouts for the five page sequence, which closed with a double spread action illustration. Here, I sketched in paper+markers, plus with digital tools.

Comecei por fazer os layouts para a sequência de cinco páginas, que termina com uma ilustração de acção em página dupla. Esbocei-o os layouts em papel+marcadores, além de usar ferramentas digitais.

Since I was doing the inking myself, I took the liberty to leave the penciling loose to speed up the process. The ones that are further fleshed out are those I felt was needed more detailed decisions ahead of inking.

Como ia eu a fazer a arte-final, tomei a liberdade de deixar o lápis mais solto para agilizar o processo. Os desenhos mais detalhados são aqueles que achei precisavam de decisões mais específicas antes da arte-final.

 

Although these look like normal graphite pencils, they are actually greyscaled blue pencils. This enabled me to go directly from breakdowns to “drawing” with markers and brushes.

Embora pareçam desenhos de grafite comuns, são na verdade lápis de cor azul passados a P/B. Isto deixou-me passar diretamente dos esboços para o “desenho” com marcadores e pincéis.

The Boy in the Bot #1 - Prologue / Prólogo

With The Boy in the Bot #1 available online, I'm sharing the artwork created for the title, which was the opening sequence. The prologue focuses on young Timmy adjusting to his new life after being orphaned, now disrupted when a black ops team comes in search of his father’s stolen secret tec.

Although a short sequence, it posed several challenges at the time, exactly two years ago, having to draw outside shots, use various narrative tricks to keep the pages tight but readable, plus that last double-spread was both an exciting composition and very demanding. The sequence had been roughly thumbnailed by writer Tom Marvelli, but I tweaked it for my interpretation.
Here, I still drew with full pencils, before switching to loose sketch+drawn finishes when I began the GN.

Com The Boy in the Bot #1 disponível online, partilho a arte que criei para o título, nomeadamente a sequência de abertura. O prólogo centra-se no jovem Timmy a adaptar-se à sua nova vida após ficar órfão, que é interrompida quando uma equipa de operações secretas vem buscar a tecnologia secreta roubada pelo seu pai.

Embora seja uma sequência curta, apresentou vários desafios na altura, há dois anos atrás, tais como desenhar planos exteriores, recorrer a truques narrativos para manter as páginas cheias mas legíveis, além de que a última página-dupla foi entusiasmante de criar mas também exigente. A sequência tinha sido esboçada por alto pelo argumentista Tom Marvelli, mas ajustei-os à minha interpretação.
Aqui, ainda desenhei com lápis finalizado, antes de mudar para esboços soltos finalizados no desenho, quando comecei a novela gráfica.
