95th Lisbon Book Fair / 95ª Feira do Livro de Lisboa

The 95th Lisbon Book Fair is taking place at Parque Eduardo VII until June 22nd and I was again attending the event, for the 4th time, at the stand of Ala dos Livros. This year, I was invited to participate in the presentation of another publisher's book, but it was impossible to partake for professional reasons, and I was only available for book signings on one day. In any case, I would like to thank the readers who visited me.

A 95ª Feira do Livro de Lisboa está a decorrer no Parque Eduardo VII até dia 22 de Junho e eu voltei a marcar presença no certame, pela 4a vez, no stand da Ala dos Livros.
Este ano, fui convidado a participar na apresentação do livro doutra editora, mas foi impossível colaborar por motivos profissionais, assim como só pude estar disponível para autógrafos apenas um dia. Em todo o caso, o meu agradecimento aos leitores que visitaram.

20º FIBDB – Photo / Fotos

O 20º Festival Internacional BD de Beja foi inaugurado no passado fim do mês e decorre até 15 de Junho. Com dezoito exposições, entre mostras individuais e colectivas, passam pelo FIBDB cerca de meia centena de artistas, entre os quais talentos de topo do panorama internacional. Além das apresentações, conversas, prémios, autógrafos e concertos desenhados, há também o Mercado do Livro, que disponibiliza a maior feira de livros de banda desenhada a sul durante o período do evento.

Entre as exposições, está patente a colectiva ‘Cadáver Esquisito!’, que expõe ao público uma breve selecção de vinte pranchas pelos autores mais reconhecidos dos leitores, que participaram na iniciativa de webcomic epónima, que coordenei entre 2007-2015, e que ainda é a maior BD colectiva jamais realizada no país.
Em Cadáver Esquisito! os autores foram desafiados a criar uma página sequencial em modo cadavre exquis, que os levou a testar a espontaneidade narrativa e criar uma sequência assente no mote da página precedente – um trabalho cooperativo de 56 autores, profissionais e amadores, que juntos construiram uma BD de 58 páginas.
A edição compilada do projecto vai estar disponível em breve e pela primeira vez. Mas ainda pode consultar a iniciativa no blogue original.

The 20th Beja International Comics Festival opened last month and will run until June 15. With eighteen exhibitions, including individual and collectives, around fifty artists will be exhibiting at FIBDB, including top talents from the international scene. In addition to presentations, chats, awards, autographs and drawing shows, there is also the Book Market, which offers the largest comic book fair in the south during the event.

Among the exhibitions, the collective exhibit ‘Cadáver Esquisito!’/’Weird Corpse!’ is on display, which presents a brief selection of twenty pages by the most renown authors among readers, who participated in the eponymous webcomic initiative, which I coordinated between 2007-2015 and which is still the largest collective comic book ever created in the country.
InCadáver Esquisito! the authors were challenged to create a sequential page in cadavre exquis mode, which led them to test narrative spontaneity and create a sequence based on the previous page – a cooperative effort by 56 authors, professionals and amateurs, who together created a 58-page comic book.
The compiled edition of the project will be available soon and for the first time. But you can still check out the initiative on the original blog.

3º MaiaBD: Photos / Fotos

The 3rd MaiaBD took place last weekend at the Maia Forum and, this being my first time at the event, it is important to highlight how impressive it is despite still being new on the national scene. Both in terms of organization and infrastructure, those responsible for A Seita publisher and the Maia city council are to be congratulated, and I dare say that it won't take long for it to establish itself in the top of the country's comics festivals.

If you haven't visited MaiaBD yet, despite missing the most active days of the programme, it is a must for any reader or fan, even if you are just going to enjoy the exhibitions on display – these are the best sets of exhibitions I have had the opportunity to appreciate in recent years in Portugal. Not only the eclecticism of the selection but also the quality of the authors present, from the most professional to amateur spheres, is a feast for the eyes, also offering displays easy to navigate through the building's spacious rooms and corridors.

Among the exhibitions is “Operation CoBrA”, a collective with pages from the first three volumes of the historical fiction series written by Marco Calhorda and published by Ala dos Livros, CoBrA: Operação Goa, with my artwork (Daniel Maia) and CoBrA: Operação Conacri – Tomo 1, by Zoran Jovicic, and Tomo 2, by Osvaldo Medina, which was launched at the event.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the organization for the invitation and also the many fans who visited me and put me to work drawing autographs and sketchcovers. And finally, a note of appreciation to the colleagues that attended the festival, for their excellent work and companionship.

O 3º MaiaBD decorreu no passado fim de semana no Fórum da Maia e, tendo sido a minha primeira ida ao evento, importa salientar o quão impressionante este é apesar de ser ainda novo no panorama nacional. Tanto ao nível da organização como na infraestrutura, os responsáveis d’A Seita e autarquia da Maia estão de parabéns, e arrisco dizer que não vai demorar para se estabelecer no top dos festivais de BD do país.
Se ainda não visitaram o MaiaBD, apesar de terem perdido os dias mais activos da programação, é uma passagem obrigatória a qualquer leitor, mesmo que vá somente desfrutar das exposições patentes – trata-se dos melhores conjuntos de mostras que tive oportunidade de apreciar nos últimos anos em Portugal. Não só o ecletismo da selecção como a qualidade dos autores presentes, das esferas mais profissionais aos amadores, enche o olho, oferecendo ainda um conjunto de exposições de fácil navegação entre as amplas salas e corredores do edifício.

Entre as exposições está “Operação CoBrA”, uma colectiva com páginas dos três primeiros volumes da série de ficção histórica escrita por Marco Calhorda e publicada pela Ala dos Livros, CoBrA: Operação Goa, com desenho meu (Daniel Maia) e CoBrA: Operação Conacri – Tomo 1, de Zoran Jovicic, e Tomo 2, de Osvaldo Medina, que foi lançado no evento.

Aproveito para agradecer à organização pelo convite e também aos vários fãs que me visitaram e puseram a trabalhar em autógrafos desenhados e sketchcovers. E por último, uma nota de apreço aos colegas presentes no festival, pelos seus excelentes trabalhos e companheirismo.

3º MaiaBD - Program / Programa

I was invited to join the new (3rd) MaiaBD comics festival, promoted by the publisher A Seita in partnership with the Maia City.
In this first attendance at the event, I will be signing CoBrA: Operação Goa (and other books) for the first time up north and supporting the collective exhibition ‘Operação CoBrA’, with artwork of mine, plus by Osvaldo Medina and Zoran Jovicic, after script by Marco Calhorda. Coordinated by Ala dos Livros and Maia BD, the exhibit includes works from the three books in the series, CoBrA: Operação Goa, CoBrA: Operação Conacri – Volume 1 and Volume 2.

I will be available for book signing on Saturday+Sunday, 3pm-5pm, and participate in the book launch on Saturday, 6pm-6:30pm. See you there!

Fui convidado a integrar o cartaz do novo festival (3º) MaiaBD, promovido pela editora A Seita em parceria com a autarquia da cidade da Maia.
Nesta primeira presença no evento, vou autografar CoBrA: Operação Goa (e outros livros) pela primeira vez no norte e apoiar a mostra colectiva ‘Operação CoBrA’, com pranchas minhas, de Osvaldo Medina e Zoran Jovicic, com argumento de Marco Calhorda. 20º FIBDB / Beja International Comics Festival

The poster for the 20th FIBDB/Beja International Comics Festival has been announced, celebrating the 2nd decade of this important event in the Portuguese comics scene, also the largest event in the field that takes place in Portugal’s south. Defined by exhibitions, presentations of projects and new developments, a book market and autograph sessions, the festival promoted by Beja City through the Beja Comics Library and coordinated by the dir. Paulo Monteiro, this year it takes place between May 30th and June 15th.

FIBDB opens on 5/30 at 9pm at Casa da Cultura, stage for twenty individual and collective exhibitions. There will be 18 Portuguese and foreign authors attending, plus three collectivities. The full program will be available soon.
This year I return to ‘BejaBD with a small collective exhibition regarding Cadáver Esquisito!/Weird Corpse!, which marks ten years since its completion and is still the largest collective comic in Portugal. The project began in 2007 in webcomic format and will be released in book form, through my editorial seal Arga Warga.

Foi anunciado o cartaz do 20º FIBDB/Festival Internacional de Banda Desenhada de Beja, que celebra a 2ª década deste importante certame do panorama da BD portuguesa, também o maior evento da área que decorre no sul do país. Pautado por exposições, apresentações de projectos e de novidades, por mercado do livro e sessões de autógrafos, o festival promovido pela C. M. de Beja através da Bedeteca de Beja e coordenado pelo dir. Paulo Monteiro, este ano decorre entre 30 de Maio e 15 de Junho.

O FIBDB inaugura a 30/5 às 21h na Casa da Cultura, palco de vinte mostras, individuais e colectivas. Vão estar presentes 18 autores portugueses e internacionais, mais três colectivos. O programa vai estar disponível em breve.
Este ano regresso ao ‘BejaBD com uma pequena exposição colectiva alusiva a Cadáver Esquisito!, que marca dez anos desde a sua conclusão e ainda é a maior BD colectiva realizada em Portugal. O projecto teve início em 2007 em formato webcomic e vai ser publicado em livro, com selo da minha chancela Arga Warga.

1st Camões Comics and Animation Festival | 1º Festival de BD e Animação Camões

Camões Secondary School (Lisbon) held this week the 1st Camões Comics and Animation Festival, coordinated by teachers António Sales, Elsa Costa and Filipe Duarte, with a short program that aims to introduce young students to the world of comics. The lineup invited authors Daniel Maia (myself) and Rita Alfaiate for a comic book presentation and workshop, respectively, plus a comics competition.

For my part, I had the opportunity to speak briefly about the fundamental concepts of comic book creation and my own practice, using as an example the production of graphic novel CoBrA: Operation Goa (Ala dos Livros), and I also spoke about the international industry, with reference to project The Boy in the Bot.

A Escola Secundária Camões (Lisboa) promoveu esta semana o 1º Festival de BD e Animação Camões, coordenado pelos professores António Sales, Elsa Costa e Filipe Duarte, com um breve programa que visa introduzir os jovens alunos no mundo da banda desenhada. O programa convidou os autores Daniel Maia (eu próprio) e Rita Alfaiate para uma apresentação de BD e workshop, respectivamente, mais um concurso.

Pela minha parte, tive a oportunidade de falar brevemente sobre os conceitos fundamentais de criação de BD e a minha própria prática, usando como exemplo a produção do álbum CoBrA: Operação Goa (Ala dos Livros), e falei ainda sobre a indústria internacional, com referência ao projecto The Boy in the Bot.

6º CoimbraBD - Photos / Fotos

The 6th CoimbraBD comics festival took place at Convento S. Francisco last weekend and it was an amazing event, easily ranking among the top 5 pop culture conventions in Portugal. My thanks to the promoters for having invited me and to the fans who stopped by my table.
As always, I had little chance to check out the event, having arrived just in time to setup my table at Artists’ Alley and head out for my presentation, concerning Another Door Comics projects to which I’m working for, such as Apparition Metempsychosis.

During the afternoon I signed many books, sold prints and original artworks, and had the chance to let the fans know about the projects I have been working on. Plus, here and there, I got to chat a bit with fellow artists and old colleagues. Overall, it was an exaustive but awesome day!

O 6º CoimbraBD decorreu no Convento S. Francisco no passado fim-de-semana e confirmou-se como um evento incrível, facilmente classificado entre as 5 principais convenções de cultura pop em Portugal. O meu agradecimento aos promotores por me terem convidado e aos fãs que passaram pela minha mesa.
Como sempre, tive pouca oportunidade de experienciar o evento, tendo chegado a tempo apenas de montar a minha mesa no Artists’ Alley e de seguir para a minha apresentação sobre os projetos da Another Door Comics em que estou a trabalhar, como Apparition Metempsychosis.

Durante a tarde, autografei vários livros, vendi prints e trabalhos originais, e tive a oportunidade de contar aos fãs sobre os projetos em que tenho estado a trabalhar. Além disso, aqui e ali, consegui conversar um pouco com outros artistas e antigos colegas. No geral, foi um dia exaustivo, mas recompensador!

6º Coimbra BD

6th CoimbraBD, the largest comics festival in the center of Portugal, opens its doors in Convento S. Francisco this weekend. The program for the inauguration on April 25th to 27th was recently announced, and with that my first time participation in the event was also spotlighted.
On April 26th, at 11:30am, I will present my new project, Apparition Metempsychosis, the next trilogy by Tom Marvelli and his publisher Another Door Comics, for which I have collaborated on The Boy in the Bot. Although the first book will only be released in the last quarter, come by for this first glimpse of the work.

During the afternoon, I will also be at the artists' area, available for book signings and chat.

Este fim de semana decorre o 6º CoimbraBD, o maior festival de banda desenhada no centro do país, com lugar no Convento S. Francisco. Foi recentemente divulgado o programa da inauguração nos dias 25 a 27 de Abril, e com isso foi igualmente indicada a minha participação no evento, pela primeira vez.
No dia 26, às 11h30, vou apresentar o meu novo projecto, Apparition Metempsychosis, a próxima trilogia de Tom Marvelli e da sua editora Another Door Comics, para a qual tenho colaborado em The Boy in the Bot. Embora o primeiro volume só vá ser publicado no último trimestre, apareçam para este primeiro vislumbre do trabalho.

Durante a tarde, vou igualmente estar presente na área de artistas, disponível para autógrafos e conversa.

Radio Movimento – Fernando Pessoa in Comics / Fernando Pessoa em BD

A few weeks ago I was interviewed at Radio Movimento’s ‘Fernando Pessoa for Everyone’s program, at the invitation by host Ricardo Belo de Morais. There, we discussed my 2024’ article about Fernando Pessoa’s adaptations to graphic novels and short comics, which was published in Quaresma, the Decipherer vol.3 and soon in Bang! #37.

Há duas semanas fui entrevistado na Rádio Movimento, no programa ‘Fernando Pessoa para Todas as Pessoas’, após convite pelo anfitrião Ricardo Belo de Morais. A conversa focou-se no meu artigo de 2024 sobre as adaptações de Fernando Pessoa em romances gráficos e bandas desenhadas curtas, publicado em Quaresma, o Decifrador vol.3 e em breve em Bang! #37.
