The Curse of Sherlee Johnson – Cover / Capa

It’s a long time coming, but Image Comics has just announced my variant cover for Daniel Henriques’ and Jonathan Glapion’s The Curse of Sherlee Johnson. This original title, cocreated by two renown inkers turned comics writer and artist, respectively, is one of the most successful series in the expanded Spawn universe, released by Todd McFarlane Productions since June 2025.
And it’s a great pleasure to have an artwork of mine featured in an issue, especially since it’s my first mainstream cover!

How the opportunity came about: Early in 2025, I wanted to contribute to Daniel Henriques’ gathering of fan-arts to help promote the title’s debut, so I drew Sherlee playing hopscoth (with an imaginary “issue 100” drawn in), which is an homage to Greg Capullo and Todd McFarlane’s iconic 1998’ Korn album cover.
I did it with no further expectations, so I was gobsmaked when Daniel and Jonathan liked the idea enough to showed it to TMP Editor-in-Chief Thomas Healy, who also appreciated it and offered to buy it for a variant cover.
The Curse of Sherlee Johnson #9 arives in December 2nd and is the halfway-point issue of the series 2nd arc. Don't miss it!

Já esperava há algum tempo, mas a Image Comics acaba de anunciar a minha capa variante para The Curse of Sherlee Johnson, de Daniel Henriques e Jonathan Glapion. Este título original, cocriado por dois arte-finalistas de renome que se tornaram argumentista e artista de comics, respetivamente, é uma das séries de maior sucesso no universo expandido de Spawn, lançado pela Todd McFarlane Productions desde Junho de 2025.
E é um grande prazer ter uma arte minha publicada num número, especialmente por ser a minha primeira capa num comic de grande distribuição!

Esta é a Capa B de TCoSJ #9, com coloração de Robert Nugent.

Como surgiu a oportunidade: No início de 2025, quis contribuir para a colecção de fan-arts que o Daniel Henriques reuniu para ajudar a promover o lançamento do título, por isso desenhei a Sherlee com o Jogo da Macaca (com uma "edição 100" imaginária ali escrita), que é um tributo à icónica capa do álbum dos Korn de 1998, ilustrada por Greg Capullo e Todd McFarlane.
Fi-lo sem grandes expectativas, por isso fiquei surpreendido quando o Daniel e o Jonathan gostaram da ideia e a mostraram ao Editor-Chefe da TMP, Thomas Healy, que também a apreciou e se ofereceu para a comprar para capa variante.
A edição The Curse of Sherlee Johnson nº9 chega a 2 de Dezembro e é o número que marca a metade do segundo arco da série. Não o percam!

Another Door Comics: 2026 and Beyond [Another Door Comics]

Publisher Another Door Comics has recently released to its readers and kickstarter backers a preview comic with showcases of their 2026 books and follow-up graphic novels. The limited edition is also made available online, at GlobalComix.
Titled Another Door Comics: 2026 and Beyond – Preview Collection, this is the 2nd such previews edition put out by the indie publisher. It covers the previously published The Boy in the Bot: Book One and Two, Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One and A Signal from Space, and the upcoming books feature The Boy in the Bot: Book Three, which wraps the series, plus Apparition Metempsychosis: Book Two, Voices, Catalina: One Crazy Bitch, and The Boy in the Bot: Access Granted.

As always, Tom Marvelli’s books share the ADC universe, both the trilogies and standalone books, but can also be read independently. Checkout the preview online or contact Another Door Comics to get a copy.

Apparition Metempsychosis: Review / Critíca

Central Comics included a brief review of Apparition Metempsychosis in their YouTube live stream in mid-August, in which they reviewed American titles:

"Apparition Metempsychosis, the first of three volumes, concluding in 2027, contains the equivalent of two comics inside, in TPB format, plus a short comic. Created by Tom Marvelli, the art is by Daniel Maia and also has parts with inks by Daniel Henriques and others with color support by Susana Resende.
This is a supernatural thriller that begins a few years earlier in Haiti, with two mercenaries in guerrilla warfare, which ends with the fatality of one of them – something that is not elaborated on in this first book.
The story then moves to the present day, in New York, where the heir to a large corporation ends up absorbing the spirit of that dead mercenary, and they begin to co-inhabit the same body; at that moment, the heir is called to the office by his father, the company director, and when he arrives there he finds him dead. Seeing himself incriminated in the crime, he escapes, is pursued by the police, and tries to understand the situation he is involved in, with paranormal occurences happening in parallel to the intrigue.
The mercenary's spirit speaks to the heir in his conscience, and sometimes takes control of the body, which proves useful in situations where his military skills help them escape apprehension. In short, it's an interesting story of criminal intrigue and spiritual redemption, with villains on both fronts.

The book feels lacking because the story unfolds slowly, and unfortunately the spacing between books is big. I also found the colors somewhat dark, perhaps due to printing problems, and I felt that Ren Spiller's color style is too textured, which makes the artwork less perceived. If we look at Daniel's black and white work, we can see that the color takes away some of the expression from the drawing, which is quite detailed in itself.
It remains an interesting project by an independent publisher, Another Door Comics."

Isto é um thriller sobrenatural, que começa uns anos antes, no Haiti, com dois mercenários em guerrilha, e acaba na fatalidade de um deles – algo que não é elaborado neste primeiro livro. A história passa depois para os tempos actuais, em Nova Iorque, onde o herdeiro de uma corporação grande acaba por absorver o espírito daquele mercenário morto, passando a co-habitarem o mesmo corpo; nesse momento, o herdeiro é chamado ao escritório pelo pai, diretor da empresa, e quando ele lá chega encontra-o morto. O espírito do mercenário fala com o herdeiro na sua consciência, e por vezes toma controlo do corpo, o que se prova útil em situações em que as suas aptidões militares os ajudam a escapar à apreensão. Em suma, é uma história interessante, de intriga criminal e de redenção espiritual, com vilões nas duas frentes.

O livro sabe a pouco, porque a história desenvolve lentamente, e infelizmente o espaçamento entre livros é grande. Também achei as cores algo escuras, talvez por problemas de impressão, e senti que o estilo de cor de Ren Spiller é demasiado texturado, que faz perder um pouco o traço. Se virmos o trabalho a preto e branco do Daniel, nota-se que a cor retira um pouco a expressão do desenho, que já de si é muito detalhado.
Continua a ser uma aposta interessante por uma editora independente, a Another Door Comics."
