Apparition Metempsychosis – Last day! / Último dia!

The Kickstarter campaign for Apparition Metempsychosis is on its FINAL DAY and we’ve just hit our 1st stretch goal! There’s still half a day to go and plenty of time to reach the 2nd stretch goal.

III Beja Horrível – Cadáver Esquisito!

The Arga Warga team where briefly in Beja yesterday, for the III Beja Horrível/Horrible Beja, an event that took place from December 12 to 14, at Beja’s Culture House. The program listed several activities, such as a Book Market of Terror and Fantasy editions, presentations of books and movie sessions, this ones under the coordination of Fábrica do Terror.
Saturday, Dec. 13th, me and Susana Resende had the opportunity to present the new book Weird Corpse!, and speak about the 100th anniversary of the cadavre exquis method, the 10th anniversary of this webcomic now compiled in comic book format, and other weird corpse projects that have been carried out in the country.

A equipa Arga Warga esteve ontem brevemente em Beja, no III Beja Horrível, evento que tem lugar entre 12 e 14 de Dezembro, na Casa da Cultura da cidade. Na programação constam actividades várias, como Mercado do Livro de Terror e Fantasia, apresentações de livros e sessões de cinema, sendo estas coordenadas pela Fábrica do Terror.
Sábado, dia 13/12, eu e Susana Resende tivemos oportunidade de apresentar de novo o álbum Cadáver Esquisito!, e falar sobre o 100º aniversário do método cadavre exquis, o 10º aniversário da conclusão deste webcomic agora compilado em livro, e doutros projectos cadáver esquisito realizados no país.

The anthology inVISÍVEIS/inVISIBLES has been making the rounds of the industry, with new presentations after the AmadoraBD comics festival, and has also been featured on TV programs. The edition is now beginning to be reviewed by comic book channels, so here are some excerpts from the reviews received.

Bruno Filipe, on CentralComics:
“To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of CERCIOEIRAS (Cooperative for the Education and Rehabilitation of Citizens with Disabilities), the anthology comics inVISIBLES was launched, where the protagonists are not superheroes, but like them, they have unique characteristics and every day they have to face dangers and great evils (prejudice and discrimination).
In this anthology, written and coordinated by Hugo Pinto, who is surrounded by some of our best national illustrators, such as Daniel Maia, Susana Resende, Joana Afonso, Luís Louro, Osvaldo Medina, Paulo J. Mendes, Ricardo Santos and Jorge Coelho (cover), we are presented with 6 stories where we are confronted with a small part of what the daily life of someone with a disability is like. Themes such as equity vs. equality, prejudice, condescension and the lack of inclusion and accessibility are presented to us with the aim of making visible what most of the time passes us by. At the end of each story it was necessary To pause for a moment and reflect on the reality that has been presented to me. In this book, we are treated to six short stories, between four and five pages long, which focus on people who suffer from a disability. Most of the stories have scripts by Hugo Pinto, marking his debut as a comic book author, and I particularly enjoyed the stories.

“I am seriously impressed with this independent release. A weighty collaboration, bringing together some of the best national illustrators. Excellent work by Hugo Pinto who, as far as I know, signs his first experience as a comic book artist here — at least it's the only one I'm aware of.
I loved the stories in general, especially the one that addresses the difference between equality and equity, a fundamental theme that many still don't understand. The last story seemed to have a more hate-centered tone, which I found a shame in an book that, as a whole, is driven by love and the purpose of inspiring. This more bitter note clashes a bit with the rest of the work.
Still, it is a very important work, executed with great quality. It is clear proof that comics are a powerful vehicle for educating, transmitting knowledge and provoking reflection. We need more initiatives like this. Many congratulations to Hugo Pinto and everyone involved.”

A antologia inVISÍVEIS tem feito as rondas do sector, com novas apresentações após o festival AmadoraBD, tendo também já sido destacado em programas de TV. A edição começa agora a ser analisada pelos canais de banda desenhada, pelo que deixo aqui alguns excertos das críticas recebidas.

Adorei as histórias no geral, especialmente a que aborda a diferença entre igualdade e equidade, um tema fundamental que muitos ainda não compreendem. A última história pareceu-me ter um tom mais centrado no ódio, o que achei pena num álbum que, no seu conjunto, é movido pelo amor e pelo propósito de inspirar. Apparition Metempsychosis – WIPs I / Diário de Produção I

The Apparition Metempsychosis campaign continues, and today I'm starting to share my WIP. As you know, I work traditionally, and, for this project, the graphic nuances of manual work matter, as they bring a more expressive and uneasy feel to the drawing line, which is more adequate for a horror comic.
As a rule, I prefer to do my inking over sketches, to preserve the energy of the initial sketching, but in the first few pages I ended up doing a more tight drawing while I was finding my footing style-wise.

For me, drawing traditionally is faster and more intuitive than digitally – although I have also done that professionally – ,despite having to work around certain shortcuts that digital tools offer, such as textured brushes and perspective aids. In traditional drawing, everything has to be done the old-fashioned way, with good practices and intuition, and through skill.

A campanha de Apparition Metempsychosis continua e hoje começo partilhas da minha produção. Como é sabido, eu trabalho tradicionalmente e, para este projecto, as nuances gráficas de um trabalho manual importam, pois trazem uma sensação mais expressiva e incerta ao traço, adequada a uma BD de horror.
Por norma, prefiro fazer a minha arte-final sobre esboços, para preservar a energia do risco inicial, mas nas primeiras páginas acabei por fazer um desenho mais elaborado, enquanto estava procurava o rumo gráfico.

Para mim, desenhar tradicionalmente é mais rápido e intuitivo do que em digital – embora também já o tenha feito a nível profissional –, apesar de ter de se contornar certos atalhos e facilitismos que a ferramenta digital oferece, como linhas texturadas e apoios de perspectiva. Em desenho tradicional, tem de ser tudo feito à moda antiga, com boas práticas e intuição, e através da perícia.
