The 2nd Central Comics Trophies: Heroes of the Decade is upon us! With two decades worth of comics awards, Central Comics conducts another public award to honor the best of the best graphic novels and creators published over the last decade. It’s a recognition that isn’t done anywhere else in the world – and it came from my idea given to TCC promoters.

The TCC:HD differs from regular TCC awards in that there’s only 5 categories: Best Portuguese Publication of the Decade (comprising all books), Best Foreign Publication of the Decade, Best Independent Publication of the Decade (for small press books and fanzines), Best Artist of the Decade and Best Writer of the Decade. It now adds two categories – Best Short Comic of the Decade and Best International Author of the Decade.

Back in 2012, the 1st TCC:HD winners were The Incredible Adventures of Dog Mendonça & Pizza Boy (by Filipe Melo & Juan Cavia), Batman: Year One (by Frank Miller & David Mazzucchelli), Venham+5 (by Bedeteca de Beja), Filipe Andrade (in BRK) and José Carlos Fernandes (in Worst Band in the World). I placed 3rd in both Best Artist and Best Independent Publication.

This time, I’m a nominee in Best Short Comic/HD with the comic “The Infante Portugal in Gathered Universes”, with José de Matos-Cruz, with artistic cameos by Daniel Henriques and Susana Resende.

O 2º Troféu Central Comics: Heróis da Década está a chegar! Com duas décadas de prémios em BD, a Central Comics realiza nova votação pública para homenagear as melhores das melhores obras e criadores publicados na última década. É uma distinção que não se faz em nenhum outro ponto do mundo – e surgiu por sugestão minha aos organizadores do TCC.

O TCC:HD difere dos prémios normais na medida em que existem só 5 categorias: Melhor Publicação Portuguesa da Década (inclui todos os livros), Melhor Publicação Estrangeira da Década, Melhor Publicação Independente da Década (livros de pequena imprensa e fanzines), Melhor Desenhador da Década e Melhor Argumentista da Década. E agora adiciona 2 categorias – Melhor Obra Curta da Década e Melhor Autor Internacional da Década.

Em 2012, os vencedores do 1º TCC:HD foram, respectivamente, As Incríveis Aventuras de Dog Mendonça & Pizza Boy (de Filipe Melo & Juan Cavia), Batman: Ano Um (de Frank Miller & David Mazzucchelli), Venham+5 (de Bedeteca de Beja), Filipe Andrade (BRK) e José Carlos Fernandes (A Pior Banda do Mundo). Fiquei em 3º lugar para Melhor Desenhador e Melhor Publicação Independente da Década.

Desta vez, estou nomeado para Melhor Obra Curta/HD com a banda desenhada “O Infante Portugal em Universos Reunidos,” com José de Matos-Cruz e cameos de Daniel Henriques e Susana Resende.

2023: Aftermath / Rescaldo

Happy 2024! Another year, another aftermath recap of my creative endeavours carried out over the past twelve months.

Editorially, certain projects I hoped to publish were postponed until 2024, but I still managed to contribute to the Portuguese comics market in several anthologies and other titles:
Continuing FCP-BD: 2022/2023, the webcomics produced for FC Porto presented the 2nd half of this seminal project ten more comics, with colors by Susana Resende. Still in the 1st quarter, I published another webcomic by participating in the cadavre exquis BD Lino initiative (#42), as a tribute to promoter/publisher Geraldes Lino.
Entering book-publishing proper, I first partook in the Barreiro IlustraBD catalogue, followed by the last issue of the fanzine Outra Bandas (#9), which concluded that project. Afterwards, I participated in two commemorative anthologies, Terminal – 25 Years of Stories, by Dr.Makete, and Zona: Ten Years, by the Tentáculo association, in which I published, respectively, a set of illustrations and an older short comic.
In the last quarter, I helped debut the anthology Alzine #1, by C.M.Alpiarça, with a couple of illustrations, and collaborated on the comic Cthulhu Sadino, by C.M.Setúbal, in partnership with Pedro Moura and Marco Gomes, and cover by João Lemos. I also appeared in the catalog 1st JuveBêDê – Drawn Autographs, by C.M.Portalegre and the Juvemedia association.

In terms of exhibitions and activities, 2023 began in March with the collective “H-Alt: 12 Edições, 12 Numbers,” at CPBD, and then in April with the collective “Ala Portuguesa,” from publisher Ala dos Livros, integrated in 4th Barreiro IlustraBD, at AMAC, and the 34th Anniversary of Alpiarça Municipal Library, in which I presented the graphic novel CoBrA: Operação Goa.
In May, the visit to the 18th FIBDB was marked by the release of Outras Bandas #9, followed by autograph sessions at the first commercial stand of Ala dos Livros at the (93rd) Lisbon Book Fair. In June, I held a discussion panel on the IPL Illustration and Comics course, in Lisbon.
At the height of summer, in July, I partook in the “Celebrate Eduardo Lourenço” initiative, in which I announced the graphic novel to be created with Sabrina Marques, and participated in “Co-Position” exhibition, at the Caldas da Rainha Cultural and Congress Center, integrated in the CONFIA 2023 event.
When autumn arrived, I launched my online portfolio page and participated in the 1st Alpiarça Fanzines and Comics Festival, simultaneously with the opening of “Cthulhu Sadino” exhibition, part of the 9th Setúbal Illustration Festival. Finally, in the last quarter, I attended the 34th Amadora BD through the autographs sessions, followed by two small collective exhibitions, “Zona – Ten Years!,” at Beja’s Casa da Cultura, and “1º JuveBêDê - Drawn Autographs,” at the Portalegre Municipal Library.

As for awards, the final nominations for the 4th BD Prize indicated CoBrA: Operação Goa for Best Portuguese Illustration, plus H-Alt #12, with my cover and interview, and Outras Bandas #8 for Best Anthology, and also “Tuesday” for Best Comic Short in Anthology, which includes script by Travis Johnson and Liliana Johnson, and tones by Susana Resende. And still in the 1st quarter, V Golden Geek nominated CoBrA: Operação Goa for Best Geek Graphic Novel, and II Golden Vinheta also nominated CoBrA, by writer Marco Calhorda, for Best Script by Portuguese Author.
Finally, another round of various nominations followed in the XX Trophies Central Comics, with nominations for CoBrA as Best National Publication, Best National Drawing and Best National Script; for BD Montijo for Best Independent Publication and Best Short Comic; for Aurora Boreal in Shared Reflexions in Best Short Work; and for H-Alt in Best Independent Publication.
The last quarter brought on new nominations, now at the 34th Amadora BD Awards, which named Terminal - 25 Years of Stories! for Best Independent Edition/Fanzine, but distinguished in it Zona - Ten Years. Congratulations to the publishers!

Feliz 2024! Novo ano, novo rescaldo das minhas actividades criativas realizadas nos passados doze meses.

Editorialmente, certos projectos que esperava editar foram adiados para 2024, mas na mesma contribuí para o mercado de banda desenhada português em várias antologias e não só:
Continuando FCP-BD: 2022/2023, os webcomics produzidos para FC Porto apresentaram a 2a metade deste projecto seminal, com mais dez BDs, com cores por Susana Resende. E ainda no 1º trimestre, editei outro webcomic ao participar na iniciativa cadavre exquis BD Lino (#42), em tributo ao divulgador/editor Geraldes Lino.
Entrando na vertente editorial, primeiro integrei o catálogo Barreiro IlustraBD, seguido pelo último número do fanzine Outras Bandas (#9), que concluiu este projecto autoral. Depois, participei em duas antologias comemorativas, Terminal – 25 Anos de Histórias, de Dr.Makete, e Zona: Dez Anos, da associação Tentáculo, nos quais editei, respectivamente, um conjunto de ilustrações e uma ‘curta antiga.
Já no último trimestre, ajudei a estrear a antologia Alzine #1, da C.M.Alpiarça, com um par de ilustrações, e colaborei no comic Cthulhu Sadino, da C.M.Setúbal, em parceria com Pedro Moura e Marco Gomes, e capa por João Lemos. A nível de exposições e actividades, 2023 começou em Março com a colectiva “H-Alt: 12 Edições, 12 Números,” no CPBD, e de seguida em Abril com a colectiva “Ala Portuguesa,” da editora Ala dos Livros, integrada no 4º Barreiro IlustraBD, no AMAC, e com o 34º Aniversário da Biblioteca Municipal de Alpiarça, em que apresentei o álbum CoBrA: Operação Goa.
Em Maio, a passagem pelo 18º FIBDB foi marcada pelo lançamento de Outras Bandas #9, seguido por sessões de autógrafos no 1º stand da Ala dos Livros, na 93ª edição da Feira do Livro de Lisboa. Em Junho, fiz colóquio no programa “Ponto de Mira”, do curso de Ilustração e BD do IPL, em Lisboa.
No alto do verão, em Julho, integrei a iniciativa “Celebrar Eduardo Lourenço,” em que anunciei a novela gráfica a ser realizada com Sabrina D. Marques, e participei na mostra “Co-Position,” no Centro Cultural e de Congressos das Caldas da Rainha, integrada no evento CONFIA 2023.
Chegado o Outono, lancei a minha página de portfolio online e participei no 1º Festival de Fanzines e BD de Alpiarça, em simultaneo com inauguração da exposição “Cthulhu Sadino”, inserida na 9ª Festa da Ilustração de Setúbal. Por fim, no último trimestre, marquei presença no 34º Amadora BD através de Sessão de Autógrafos, a que se seguiram duas pequenas mostras colectivas, “Zona - 10 Anos!,” na Casa da Cultura de Beja, e “1º JuveBêDê - Autógrafos Desenhados,” na Biblioteca Municipal de Portalegre.

Quanto a prémios, as nomeações finais do 4º Prémio BD indicaram CoBrA: Operação Goa para Melhor Ilustração Portuguesa, mais H-Alt #12, com capa e destaques autoral meus, e Outras Bandas #8 para Melhor Antologia, e ainda “Terça-Feita” para Melhor BD Curta em Antologia, que inclui arg. de Travis Johnson e Liliana Johnson, e tons de Susana Resende. E ainda no 1º trimestre, o V Geek d’Ouro nomeou CoBrA: Operação Goa para Melhor Banda Desenhada Geek, e II Vinheta d’Ouro também indicou CoBrA, do escritor Marco Calhorda, para Melhor Argumento de Autor Português.

Por fim, seguiu-se outra ronda de nomeações variadas no XX Troféus Central Comics, com indicações de CoBrA para Melhor Publicação Nacional, Melhor Desenho Nacional e Melhor Argumento Nacional; para BD Montijo em Melhor Publicação Independente e Melhor Obra Curta; para Aurora Boreal em Reflexos Partilhados em Melhor Obra Curta; e para H-Alt em Melhor Publicação Independente.
O último trimestre trouxe novas nomeações, agora no 34º Prémio de BD da Amadora, que nomeou Terminal - 25 Anos de Histórias! para Melhor Edição Independente/Fanzine, mas consagrou nesta categoria Zona - Dez Anos. Parabéns aos editores!
