CoBrA – WiP 1 / Desenho em Progresso 1

In December, I announced the project I had been developing with writer Marco Calhorda, CoBrA: Operation Goa, to be published this year. Until then, why not share some images from the comic? This splash page takes place in mid adventure, at a key moment in the narrative that finds the portuguese soldiers in a difficult situation.

Contrary to what I did on other pages, produced using a loose drawing method and direct inking, given the importance of this page I wanted to draw it in more detail. That is, in most of the pages their sketches were made with non-repro colored pencil, of magenta or cyan color, just planning the sequences and rehearsing the figures before moving on to inking with India ink and opaque markers, in order to speed up production. Sometimes, I went further in detail in the sketching of figures, as well as made corrections with white acrylics, but in this case the production was more deliberate, with  preliminary sketches then being properly drawn with regular pencils.

Not wanting to lose the original in pencils, I converted the drawing to blue-tones and printed it on a different artboard, then finalizing it. Therefore, there are two originals of this same image, a penciled and an inked one. After scanning and adjusting the page's contrasts, I digitally applied halftone areas via screen-tones, to help create depths and differentiate planes. It must be said that this graphic novel was meant to be printed in color, which is why certain effects were left to consolidate in that production phase and, therefore, it requires slight adjustments in its convertion to black & white.

Em Dezembro, anunciei o projecto que tenho vindo a desenvolver com o argumentista Marco Calhorda, CoBrA: Operação Goa, por editar este ano. Até lá, porque não partilhar imagens da produção?... Esta página splash (vinheta de prancha inteira) surge a meio do álbum, num momento-chave da narrativa que encontra os soldados portugueses numa situação difícil.
Ao contrário do que fiz noutras pranchas, produzidas em método de desenho solto e finalização directa, dada a importância desta página quis desenhá-la mais detalhadamente. Embora na maioria da BD os esboços tenham sido feitos com grafite colorido, apenas planificando sequências e ensaiando figuras antes de passar à arte-final com tinta-da-china e marcadores, aqui fiz uma produção mais deliberada, com os esboços preliminares a serem depois desenhados tradicionalmente a grafite.

Não querendo perder a prancha original a lápis, digitalizei e converti o desenho para tom azul, e imprimi-o numa nova prancha para então arte-finalizar. Assim, passam a existir dois originais da imagem, em grafite e em tinta-da-china e canetas técnicas. Após digitalizar e ajustar os contrastes da prancha, apliquei áreas de retículas, para ajudar a criar profundidades e diferenciar planos. É preciso considerar que este álbum foi desenhado para ser impresso a cor, daí que certos efeitos foram deixados para consolidar nessa fase da produção e, portanto, requer ligeiros retoques na adaptação para impressão a P/B.

Outras Bandas #4 nominated in 3rd Bandas Desenhas Awards | Outras Bandas #4 nomeado em 3º Prémios Bandas Desenhadas

The small-press comics anthology Outras Bandas that I co-publish with Tágide collective has once again been nominated in Portuguese comics awards. Following issues #0 and #1 nominations for Best Independent Publication and Best Short Comic in 2020's XVII Central Comics Trophies (for which it won the later), and #2 nominations for Best Portuguese Anthology and Best Short Comic in Anthology in 2020's 2nd Bandas Desenhadas Awards, this year's first publication, Outras Bandas #4, has again been nominated in the 3rd Bandas Desenhadas Awards, for Best Portuguese Anthology and Best Short Comic in Anthology, spotlighting my partner Susana Resende's “Lost Boy” short tale.
Considering Tágide has five more issues in the works to release throughout the year, this is an unexpected but welcomed small measure of recognition that fills the group with hope that our efforts will continue to get positive feedback from the community. On my colleagues and mine behalf, thanks for this consideration!

A antologia de banda desenhada Outras Bandas, que co-edito com o colectivo Tágide, foi de novo nomeada em prémios portugueses de BD. Após as nomeações do #0 e #1 para Melhor Publicação Independente e Melhor BD Curta nos XVII Troféus Central Comics '2020 (no qual ganhou o último), e as nomeações do #2 para Melhor Antologia Portuguesa e Melhor BD Curta em Antologia no 2º Prémios Bandas Desenhadas '2020, a primeira edição deste ano, Outras Bandas #4, voltou a ser nomeada no 3º Prémio Bandas Desenhadas, em Melhor Antologia Portuguesa e Melhor BD Curta em Antologia, destacando o conto “Menino Perdido” de Susana Resende.
Considerando que a Tágide tem mais cinco edições previstas para lançar este ano, esta é uma inesperada, mas bem-vinda, pequena medida de reconhecimento, que enche o grupo de esperança de que nossos esforços continuarão a obter feedback positivo da comunidade. Yearbook 2020: Comics page / Página de BD

As promised, these are the artworks created for the seminal anthology Yearbook 2020: Universal Declaration of Human Rights - An Illustrated Book, put together by Chiaroscuro Studios and for which I had the great pleasure of contributing.
Below are the double spread pages illustrating Article 13/A of the United Nations' UDHR, that I drew with technical pens and india ink, plus colored digitally, trying to mimic a watercolor expression and in a palet close to Nepal's traditionally vibrant colors.

The reason why I opted to work in double spread – meaning, two connecting artboards – is because one of the purposes of the publication was to gather proceeds to offer as humanitary relief to the ACNUR/Brasil's ONU Agency for Refugees, coming both from the profits of the illustrated book's sales and from the original artworks auction (more on that soon); therefore, I figured that if my contribution amounted to two pages perhaps they might garner a higher value than a single page would...

Como prometido, estas são as artes criadas para a seminal antologia Yearbook 2020: Declaração Universal dos Direitos Humanos - Livro Ilustrado, publicada pela Chiaroscuro Studios e para a qual tive o grande prazer de contribuir. Abaixo está a página dupla que ilustra o Artigo 13/A da DUDH das Nações Unidas, que desenhei com canetas técnicas e tinta-da-china, e que colori digitalmente, tentando imitar a expressão de aguarela, numa paleta próxima das vibrantes cores tradicionais do Nepal.
A razão porque optei por trabalhar em página dupla – ou seja, duas pranchas unidas – é por um dos propósitos da publicação ser angariar verba para oferecer como apoio humanitário à ACNUR/Agência da ONU para Refugiados no Brasil, proveniente tanto do lucros das vendas do livro ilustrado como do leilão das artes originais (mais sobre isso em breve); portanto, achei que se o contributo fosse em duas páginas talvez obtivessem um valor mais alto do que uma única prancha...

Os Contos mais Épicos de Conan – Pre-Sale / Pré-Venda

The book Os Contos mais Épicos de Conan / The Most Epic Tales of Conan, by Robert E. Howard, by publisher Saída de Emergência, is now in pre-sale and will be distributed in bookstores halfway through May. Conan is the most emblematic hero of the fantasy genre, a native of the Hyborian Era, synonymous with the adventurous barbarian, passionate about life, melancholical, violent, but with a huge heart.
Born in literature almost 90 years ago, in 1932, and adapted in the following decades for comics, cinema and games, the Cimmerian mercenary is the protagonist of this anthology that celebrates both the hero and the author, with a compilation of his main tales, illustrated by 23 portuguese authors, among whom I had the pleasure of being counted.

O livro Os Contos mais Épicos de Conan, de Robert E. Howard, pela editora Saída de Emergência, já está em pré-venda e será distribuído nas livrarias a meio de Maio. Conan é o mais emblemático herói do género fantasia, um nativo da Era Hiboriana, sinónimo do bárbaro aventureiro, apaixonado pela vida, melancólico, violento, mas com um enorme coração.
Nascido na literatura há quase 90 anos, em 1932, e adaptado nas décadas seguintes para a banda desenhada, cinema e jogos, o mercenário Cimério é o protagonista desta antologia que celebra o herói e o autor, numa compilação dos seus principais contos, ilustrados por 23 autores nacionais, entre os quais tive o prazer de ser contado.

CurArte - Online discussion panel / Colóquio online

Last Friday, me and colleague Daniel Henriques, inker for DC Comics, participated in the IV Cicle of Art & Culture, with a brief online discussion panel regarding Comics Creation for CurArte, the art group coordinated by the Cultural and Recreational Department of Lisbon's Faculty of Medicine. The collectivity, organized by the Students Association' Speaker, is made up by over a duzen Medicine students who are art enthusiasts and that gather in Drawing and Painting sessions, often mixed with workshops conducted by professional artists.
After discussing the various ways in which comics creation works in a commercial context and showcasing a few of our works, so as to comment on production methods, we took a few Q&A from the students. Thank you for the invitation, AEFML!

Na passada Sexta-feira, eu e colega Daniel Henriques, arte-finalista da DC Comics, participámos no IV Ciclo de Arte & Cultura, com um breve colóquio online sobre Criação de Banda Desenhada para CurArte, um grupo de arte coordenado pelo Departamento Cultural e Recreativo da Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa. O colectivo, organizado pelo Vogal da Associação de Estudantes, é composto por uma dúzia de estudantes de medicina que são entusiastas de arte e que se reúnem para sessões de Desenho e Pintura, frequentemente misturadas com workshops conduzidos por artistas profissionais.
Após discutir várias formas em como a criação de BD é realizada num contexto profissional e mostrar alguns trabalhos nossos, como modo de apresentar métodos de trabalho, respondemos a questões dos alunos. Obrigado pelo convite, AEFML!
