CoBrA – New graphic novel / Novo àlbum de BD

It's time to officially unveil my new comics work – CoBrA: Operation Goa! Written and coordinated by writer Marco Calhorda, it's the biggest sequential art project I have undertaken in the last three years and which will start a new collection, with another two/three graphic novels to be published over the next few years.

The comic-book has been gradually previewed in events in the industry, starting with the 1st page (p2) being shown in the collective exhibit “Portuguese Comics are Super!”, at the 10th Brussels Comic Strip Festival, in 2019, an exhibition that was repeated at the end of the year in Beja Comics Library; and, more recently, with a 2nd page (p39) appearing in the collective exhibition “30+1: Comics don't Quarantine!”, by the 31st Amadora BD, as well as in its catalog. These two comic pages didn't betray the work's theme, but rather served to illustrate the project's potential and allowed the readers to learn about what we were developing.

Unfortunately, due to the current pandemic, the publication needed to be postponed until next year, as extraordinary situations changed the creative and commercial circumstances. Still with no date set for release and in view of the unknown outlook regarding the publishing market, the graphic novel will be presented at an opportune time in the first half of 2021.

The graphic novel, with European format, has over 50 black/white comic pages and extras, with studies and historial information. The project will soon begin its promotion, such as interviews and contents disclosure, which can be followed on the website COBRAOP.

CoBrA: Operation Goa, is based on real events that occurred in the early '60s, concerning Portugal's interests in Goa, then a Portuguese colony of 500 years. Following the genres Adventure and Espionage, and with nuance of geopolitical intrigue, the comic portrays the efforts of an unlikely hero, entrepenuer Jorge Jardim, and his secret spy agency, CoBrA, in challenging the Portuguese dictatorship's plan and facing the might of the Indian army, to free the thousands of soldiers held in POW camps after Goa's takeover, used as a political leverage on the world stage. With the lives of four thousand soldiers at stake, can a man make a difference and bet on the winning cards?...

É hora de revelar oficialmente o meu novo trabalho em banda desenhada – CoBrA: Operação Goa! Escrito e coordenado pelo argumentista Marco Calhorda, este é o projecto de maior fôlego que realizo em três anos e que dará início a uma nova colecção, com outros dois/três álbuns por publicar durante os próximos anos.
A BD tem sido antecipada aos poucos em eventos do sector, começando com a primeira prancha (pág.2) a ser integrada na mostra colectiva “A BD Portuguesa é Super!”, no 10º Brussels Comic Strip Festival/Féte de la BD, em 2019, exposição esta que foi repetida no final do ano na Bedeteca de Beja; e, mais recentemente, com uma segunda página (p39) a constar na mostra colectiva “30+1: A BD não faz Quarentena!”, no 31º Amadora BD, bem como no respectivo catálogo. Estas duas pranchas não traíram o contexto da obra, antes serviram para ilustrar o potencial do projecto de acordo com as mostras onde se inseriram, porém permitindo ao público tomar conhecimento de um trabalho a ser desenvolvido.
Infelizmente, devido ao panorama pandémico actual, a publicação precisou de ser adiada para o próximo ano, à medida que situações extraordinárias alteraram as circunstâncias criativas e comerciais. Ainda sem data marcada e perante a incógnita face ao reactivar do mercado editorial, o álbum deverá ser apresentado em momento oportuno no 1º semestre de 2021.

CoBrA: Operação Goa, é baseado em acontecimentos reais ocorridos no início dos anos 60, relativos aos interesses de Portugal em Goa, então uma colónia portuguesa desde há 500 anos. Seguindo os géneros Aventura e Espionagem, e com nuances de intriga geopolítica, a BD retrata os esforços de um herói improvável, o empresário Jorge Jardim, e da sua agência secreta de espionagem, CoBrA, ao desafiar o plano do Estado Novo e ao enfrentar o poder do exército Indiano, para libertar os milhares de soldados detidos em campos de prisioneiros de guerra após a tomada de Goa, usados como arma política no palco mundial. Com as vidas de quatro mil soldados em jogo, poderá um homem marcar a diferença e apostar na cartada vencedora?...
O álbum, de formato europeu, tem mais de 50 páginas a preto-e-branco e caderno de extras, com estudos preliminares e informação histórica. O projecto vai começar em breve acções de divulgação, como entrevistas e relevação de conteúdos, que podem ser seguidas no site COBRAOP.
