Barreiro Ilustra BD

A decorrer no Auditório Municipal Augusto Cabrita (AMAC), de 1 de Setembro a 14 de Outubro, o evento Barreiro Ilustra BD surge da parceria entre o autor João Raz, administrador do blog/grupo de facebook Desenhos, Inks & Rabiscos, e a Câmara Municipal de Barreiro, com vista a proporcionar aos fãs e curiosos por estas formas de arte – a banda desenhada e ilustração – um contacto privilegiado com artistas nacionais. Na primeira edição deste novo evento português, os visitantes vão ter acesso a uma selecção de obras recentes pelos autores convidados, num ambiente descontraído, simpático e, acima de tudo, familiar, onde cada artista apresentará a sua expressão gráfica, numa mostra repleta de diversidade.

No dia 22 de Setembro, entre as 16h e 22h, o AMAC acolhe um encontro com os autores, pautado por colóquios, autógrafos, sessões de desenho ao vivo, e área para venda de edições e merchandize.

Participam neste salão os artistas: Ana Pais, Artur Filipe, Carlos Rocha, Catarina Teixeira, Daniel da Silva Lopes, Daniel Maia, Derradé, Diana Marques, Dina Barbosa, Diogo Carvalho, Diogo Mané, Eliseu “Zeu” Gouveia, Filipe Duarte, Henrique & Duarte Gandum, Inocência Dias, João “Jhohn” Amaral, João Gordinho, João Raz, Luís Belerique, Mariana Flores, Miguel Falcato, Miguel Mendonça, Nuno Saraiva, Osvaldo Medina, Patrik Caetano, Paulo Monteiro, Paulo Montes, Pedro Brito, Pedro Potier, Fernando “Phermad” Madeira, Quico Nogueira, Rui Ramos, Samuel Santos, Sérgio Santos, Sofia Neto, Susana Resende e Tânia Cardoso. Para além da exposição destes 38 autores, haverá ainda uma homenagem póstuma ao autor norte-americano Bernie Wrightson, figura incontornável da BD mundial, ilustrador de Swamp Thing, Batman, House of Mystery, Frankenstein, entre outros.

At the Augusto Cabrita Municipal Auditorium (AMAC), from September 1st to October 14th, the event Barreiro Ilustra BD comes from a partnership between author João Raz, administrator of the blog/facebook group Desenhos, Inks & Rabiscos, and Barreiro Municipality, in order to provide fans and people curious about these art forms – comics and illustration – a privileged contact with portuguese artists. In the first edition of this new event, visitors will have access to a selection of recent works by the 38 guest authors, plus a postumus exhibit with Bernie Wrightson's artwork, in a relaxed, friendly and, above all, familiar environment, where each artist will present his graphic expression in a show full of diversity.

On September 22nd, from 4pm to 10pm, the AMAC hosts a meeting with the authors, filled with panels, autographs, live drawing sessions, and Artist Alley.

The Flash: Sample / Amostra

The Flash was always one of my favorite heroes, even before his recent rise to fame through the DCU movies and TV series. This comics sample* from a while back served to renew my portfolio, by drawing a sequence from The Flash (vol.4) #44, written by Robert Venditti & Van Jensen (with Brett Booth as the original artist).

O Flash foi sempre um dos meus heróis favoritos, ainda antes da recente fama atráves dos filmes DCU e séries de TV. 1978: Comics releases / BDs publicadas

For "something completely different," today I share an initiative (like those that often mobilize social networks) that invites us to explore what comics were on sale at the time of our birth – perhaps, so as to triangulate what our birth comics sign is.

Six months after turning 40, I've discovered that in January 1978, among hundreds of other releases, The Avengers #167 was on the racks, where Earth's mightiest heroes first meet the (original) Guardians of the Galaxy; and Green Lantern & Green Arrow #100, a landmark issue at the height of the success of this duo. In terms of books, The Silver Surfer: The Ultimate Comics Experience, one of the final partnerships by the legendary team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and Marvel's first graphic novel edition; A Contract with God, a masterpiece by the "father of sequential art," Will Eisner, which is also considered the first graphic novel, as a work aimed at adult readers; and, on this side of the Atlantic, Corto Maltese: The Ethiopians, by Hugo Pratt, that published in a single volume the varioys chapters that had previously been previewed in magazine Pif Gadget; Lastly, it's noteworthy to mention How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way, by Stan Lee, with drawings by John Romita Sr., that marked generations of aspiring comics authors, being one of the first and most practical tutorials on drawing commercial comics ...the Marvel way.

Now, I need to find the time to read the three comics in this lot that I haven't yet...

Para “algo completamente diferente,” hoje partilho uma iniciativa (das que frequentemente mobilizam as redes sociais) que propôe explorarmos quais BDs estavam à venda à data do nosso nascimento – talvez para triangularmos qual é o signo bedéfilo sob qual nascemos.

Seis meses após entrar nos 40s, descobri que, em Janeiro 1978, entre centenas doutros, estavam à venda os comics The Avengers #167, onde os mais poderosos heróis da Terra encontram pela primeira vez os (originais) Guardiães da Galáxia; e Green Lantern & Green Arrow #100, uma revista dupla, no auge do sucesso deste duo. Em matéria de álbuns, lançaram The Silver Surfer: The Ultimate Comics Experience, uma das últimas parcerias da lendária dupla Stan Lee e Jack Kirby e primeira edição da Marvel em forma de álbum; A Contract with God, uma obra-prima do “pai da narrativa sequencial,” Will Eisner, popularizada como sendo a primeira novela gráfica enquanto BD dirigida a leitores adultos; e, neste lado do Atlântico, Corto Maltese: As Etiópicas, de Hugo Pratt, que editou integralmente em volume único a BD que havia sido antevista em capítulos na revista Pif Gadget. Por último, saliento a edição How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way, por Stan Lee, com desenhos de John Romita Sr., que marcou gerações de aspirantes a autor de BD, sendo um dos primeiros e mais práticos tutoriais sobre a prática de banda desenhada comercial ...ao jeito da Marvel.

Agora, preciso de arranjar tempo para ler as três obras deste lote que ainda nunca li...

XIV FIBDB/Beja International Comics Festival: Photos / Fotos

Terminou o XIV FIBDB/Festival Internacional de BD de Beja, agora com o núcleo do evento regressado à Casa da Cultura. Reunindo mais de 50 autores, de países como Argentina, Bélgica, Brasil, Canadá, Espanha, EUA, França, Itália, Suécia e Portugal, os visitantes tiveram acesso gratuito a 21 exposições e a uma ampla programação paralela, espalhada por oito espaços no centro histórico da cidade.

Este ano, sem participar directamente no evento, acompanhei a Susana Resende em visita ao festival, proporcionada pela C.M.M. aos formandos do curso Iniciação à Arte Sequencial, conduzida pelo autor e director do festival Paulo Monteiro, e também acompanhada pelo autor Penim Loureiro, que fez uma surpresa aos alunos – ao todo, um encontro irrecusável!
A viagem, que esperamos sirva de inspiração aos formandos, agora que vão aventurar-se na produção de uma obra curta sua, fica retratada nas fotos em baixo...

The XIV FIBDB/Beja International Comics Festival has wrapped-up, now with its main stage returned to the Cultural Center. Gathering over 50 authors, from countries such as Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Spain, EUA, France, Italy, Sweden and Portugal, the visitors had free access to 21 exhibits and an ample parallel program, spread out at eight spaces in the city's historic center.

This year, not participating directly in the event, I have accompanied Susana Resende in a field trip to the festival, provided by C.M.M. to the students of Initiation to Sequential Art course, conducted by author and FIBDB's director Paulo Monteiro, and also accompanied by author Penim Loureiro, who surprised the group in this fashion – overall, an occasion to not be missed!

The trip, that we hope will serve as inspiration to the students, that will now be venturing in the production to a short comics of their own, was portraid in the below photos...

Blast from the Past: Mural

My parents cleaned up their garagem and found a rolled-up scenery paper that, to my surprise, had glued on it a brunch of old drawings of mine from my penultimate year in high-school, twenty some years ago (gulp!). I had totally forgotten about them.
These sketches and preliminary artwork were done for an in-contest at my Art class, for us to choose from a concept to paint a mural. My drawing was chosen and, for the next couple of months, all my colleagues rolled-up our sleeves and painted it on a wall by the cafeteria, that outlooked the street – it was grooling and great fun!
By then, I had already published my first comic in the school newspaper and drawn a Youth Week poster for the city hall, so this was sort of my “hat trick.” Today, both the mural and the wall aren't there anymore, but it was great to see that painting up there for so many years, though.

 

Os meus pais limparam a garagem e deram com um rolo de papel kraft que, para minha surpresa, tinha colados uma série de desenhos feitos no meu penúltimo ano do liceu, há coisa de vinte anos atrás (gulp!). Estava completamente esquecido deles.
Estes esboços e arte preliminar foram feitos para um concurso interno na minha turma de Artes, para se escolher o conceito para pintar num mural. O meu desenho foi seleccionado e, durante os meses seguintes, todos os meus colegas enrolaram as mangas e pintámos uma parede perto da cafetaria, virada para a rua – foi uma experiência divertida!
Até então, já tinha publicado a minha primeira BD no jornal escolar e desenhado um poster da Semana da Juventude para a câmara municipal, portanto isto foi como que um “hat trick.” Hoje, tanto o mural como a parede já não existem, mas foi giro ver a pintura ali durante tantos anos.

Traços & Tons: Virtual exhibit / Exposição virtual

My solo exhibit Traços & Tons / Lines & Tones, held from Nov. 13th to Dec. 16th of 2017 at S. Domingos de Rana Municipal Library, in Cascais, got “immortalized” by the end of the year due to the initiative to film the whole building in a 360º virtual tour. Amongst the various facets of the library, such as the José de Matos-Cruz Comics Library and multipurpose hall, where my show took place, you can now walk through the establishment from a distance, in this link.

A minha exposição individual Traços & Tons, patente entre 13 Nov. e 16 Dez. de 2017 na Biblioteca Municipal de S. Domingos de Rana, em Tires, no concelho de Cascais, ficou “imortalizada” no final do ano pela iniciativa tecnologica de filmar o edifício numa visita virtual em 360º. Entre as várias facetas da biblioteca, como a Bedeteca José de Matos-Cruz e a sala polivalente, onde teve lugar a minha mostra, agora podem percorrer o estabelecimento à distância, neste link.
