April, Carnation Showers at II FFBDA | Abril, Cravos Mil no II FFBDA

Alpiarça once again hosts the FFBDA (Alpiarça Fanzines and Comics Festival), a show dedicated to the practice of amateur publishing in all its aspects, with greater expression in comic books. Created by alpiarcense author Mário André (Quaresma, the Decipherer) and organized by Associação Tentáculo, in partnership with the city, the 2nd FFBDA takes place between the 20th and 22nd of September. This year, I am present at the collective exhibition “Freedom”, which showcases the anthological book April, Carnation Showers: Stories of Freedom, by the group TágIIde, on display at Casa dos Patudos. I will also participate in the presentation, “April, Carnation Showers: Memories, Visions and Illusions”, on September 21st, at 4:30 pm.

Alpiarça volta a acolher o Festival de Fanzines e Banda Desenhada de Alpiarça, um salão dedicado à prática de edição amadora em todas as suas vertentes, com maior expressão em BD. Idealizado pelo autor alpiarcense Mário André (Quaresma, o Decifrador) e organizado pela Associação Tentáculo, em parceria com a autarquia, o 2º FFBDA decorre entre 20 e 22 de Setembro. Este ano, marco presença com a mostra colectiva “Liberdade”, que expõe o álbum antológico Abril, Cravos Mil: Histórias de Liberdade, do grupo TágIIde, patente na Casa dos Patudos. Participo ainda na apresentação, “Abril, Cravos Mil: Recordações, Visões e Ilusões”, no dia 21 de Setembro, às 16h30.

OverPower: World of Legends – Illustration / Ilustração (2)

A 2nd image of mine for OverPower: World of Legends has been shared, affording me the opportunity to further showcase the artwork. This time, it’s a teamwork card featuring a trio of macabre characters, with Queen of Hearts, Headless Horseman & Sweeney Todd. I though this team-up was genius; we can easily see these three finding something in common in each other.
Again, a basic orientation for the artwork had been given leaving me to find a way to present it. I originally tried to have them in a surreal setting, with clowdy skies behind and floor with chessboard themes, but given we already had an overcrowded card I had to just focus on the figures themselves.

The card game returns after twenty years with a new deck very soon, through a Kickstart campaign that begins on October 15th.

Uma segunda imagem minha para OverPower: World of Legends foi partilhada, dando-me a oportunidade de mostrar mais esta arte. Desta vez, é uma carta de equipa com um trio de personagens macabras, a Rainha de Copas, o Cavaleiro Sem Cabeça e Sweeney Todd. Achei esta equipa genial; podemos facilmente ver estes três a encontrarem algo em comum um nos outros.
Novamente, foi-me dada uma orientação básica para a obra cabendo-me encontrar uma forma de a apresentar. Originalmente, tentei pô-los num cenário surreal, com um céu turvo atrás e um chão com temas de tabuleiro de xadrez, mas como já tínhamos a carta sobrelotada tive de me focar apenas nas próprias figuras.

O jogo de cartas regressa em breve após vinte anos com um novo baralho, através de uma campanha Kickstarter que começa no dia 15 de outubro.

The OverPower: World of Legends has begun gearing up for the revival of this popular collectible card game, which launches on October 15th, at Kickstarter. Among the first illustrations showcased by the company’s social media is one of mine, featuring Billy the Kid's Power Card.

Given that card has been shared, here’s its artwork progression. The essence of the image had been given by the team, so I just had to find a composition to make it work and sketched two options. The first showed a classic non-descript cowboy and the second embrassed Billy’s youth and wickedness, getting more historically specific with his hat and scarf, and general atire.
Although the cards are small and include information graphics, OverPower holds a huge legacy regarding artwork quality, so I elected to hand draw this in A4 format, to get a good amount of detail in the image.

The OverPower: World of Legends começou a preparar-se para o ressurgimento deste popular jogo de cartas colecionável que vai ser lançado a 15 de Outubro, no Kickstarter. Entre as primeiras ilustrações divulgadas nas redes sociais da empresa está uma minha, com o Power Card de Billy the Kid.

Dado que a carta foi partilhada, aqui está a produção da arte. A essência da imagem foi indicada pela equipa, pelo que só tive de encontrar uma composição que funcionasse e esboçar duas opções. A primeira mostrava um cowboy clássico e a segunda sublinhava mais a juventude e malícia de Billy, sendo historicamente mais específico com o seu chapéu e cachecol, e os trajes em geral.
Embora as cartas sejam pequenas e incluam gráficos informativos, o OverPower guarda um enorme legado em relação à qualidade da arte, pelo que optei por desenhar à mão em formato A4, para atingir uma boa quantidade de detalhes na imagem.
