Penciling X #11 was an eye-opening experience; I didn’t expect some production
facets to come so easy or to trip up on others, but, all in all, I acquired
a better understanding of my strengths and of what must be improved. Still, regardless
of my performance, this business is odd regarding cheering or condemning its
publications, as reasons why a comic is liked/disliked may have little to do
with one’s performance in it; so, no matter what the fans reaction is, our
creative path is our own and shouldn’t be subjective to a work’s success/failure
– meaning, authors must ALWAYS strive to get better. However, ‘this being my
first major edition, I admit it’s great to get some feedback, especially since
it was mostly positive - hah!
And although I’m VERY appreciative of these reviewer’s attention and
constructive criticism, next time I probably won’t gather clippings like this,
because it takes too much Googling… But here's a few of them (apologies
if I missed some):
apreciada/desapreciada poderem ter pouco a ver com o nosso desempenho na mesma;
“No próximo dia 12 Março irá
definitivo as portas do mercado norte-americano.”
“(…) This book has amazing artwork by Daniel Maia, and the coloring by
Michelle Madsen is fantastic. The cover, which I will post alongside this, is
one of the most vibrant and different looking covers I have seen in a while. The issue has a lot of solid action, and moves the
conflict between X and Carmine forward well (…)”
“Daniel Maia takes over for Eric Nguyen on Duane
Swierczynski’s ongoing gritty action series, and the art does a lot for the
issue, which can be summed up as “X gets the ever-loving hell beaten out of him
for about seventeen pages.” Seriously. There are conventional beatings, and
then there are Duane Swierczynski beatings. (…) Worth a read for gritty action fans.”
“(…) The art at times wavers in this issue, but it wasn’t enough to turn
me away from the story.”
“Every time I think that Swierczynski and Maia have gone as brutal as
they can, they never fail to surprise me by ramping things up an extra notch.
(…) If you like vigilante comics where the ‘hero’ pulls no punches, then I’d be
very surprised if you weren’t reading ‘X’ already.”
“Visually, the chaotic atmosphere of this issue stood out most. The
destruction, flames, brutality of the fight between X and Gamble. All of it is
what you would expect to see in this kind of situation. Things have spun out of
control in Arcadia and that is captured on every page of this issue. (…)”
“(…) Daniel Maia takes over the artwork duties and has his hands full
with the big, huge fire-laden action scenes between X and Gamble, contrasted
with the quiet, normal-light of Tango’s apartment and the other showdown. But he does a
fantastic job here, really living in the details.”
“(…) Afastado do desenho profissional
“(…) Sometimes you just need some action packed issues, and not a lot of
dialogue. That is exactly what we get. I don’t love it all the time, but X
needed this since he has this new code now. Plus I love when an issue can be
read with using only the pictures. It tells a lot about an issue and the
overall theme they are trying to get across. (…) I would say for art purposes or sequencing pick up the issue for some
pleasure on your eyes. (…)”
Again, thanks to all the professional critics and enthusiastic fans that
took time to share their thoughts on this issue of X.
