OverPower: World of Legends – Card Game / Jogo de Cartas

The news don’t stop!... I now announce the return of OverPower, one of the most famous and successful collectible card games in the North American industry, which makes a comeback after over twenty years, when it was popularized by the partnership with Marvel Comics and brought those superheroes to the RPG field.
The game returns with OverPower – World of Legends, which adds dozens of iconic heroes from classic literature and mythology to the known cards, thus expanding existing decks, as well as updating rules and game mechanics, while keeping 100% compatibility with the original cards.
The campaign launches via Kickstarter on October 15, 2024!

For my part, I was pleased to be invited to contribute several illustrations. And since one of them was part of the initial announcement, I take the opportunity to share here my interpretation of Billy the Kid in his Power Card.

O jogo regressa com OverPower – World of Legends, que adiciona às cartas conhecidas dezenas de icónicos heróis da literatura clássica e mitologia, expandindo assim os baralhos existentes, assim como vai actualizar regras e mecânicas de jogo, porém mantendo 100% compatibilidade com as cartas originais.
A campanha de lançamento via Kickstarter tem arranque a 15 de Outubro de 2024!

Pela minha parte, tive o prazer de ser convidado a contribuir com diversas ilustrações. E visto que uma delas fez parte do anúncio inicial, aproveito para partilhar aqui a minha interpretação de Billy the Kid na sua Power Card.

The Boy in the Bot – Graphic novel / Novela gráfica

The news is out! Writer/publisher Tom Marvelli is launching a new comics universe through his publishing label  Another Door Comics, following a sucessful career at Marvel Comics and Hasbro as brand and licensing executive, and I’ll be along for the ride. The Boy in the Bot explores the futurism/horror side of comics and it’s crowdfunding campaing was just launched at Kickstarter and IndieGoGo. The book starts shipping in December.
I was brought on to help with the artwork of the book, alongside artists Rafael Loureiro and Leo Rodrigues, plus colorist Ren Spiller, and with cover artists Daniela Rivera and Tracie Ching. I’m thrilled to have a go at helping to birth these new characters, especially given Tom’s high quality of writting, that stands amongst the best in the field although this is his creative debut.

Regarding the book, The Boy in the Bot: What is Project B.L.U.E.? is the first book in an sci-fi trilogy, with a 72-page adventure that follows a lonely boy who, after experiencing a tragic loss, must navigate the complexities of a hostile grown-up world. Struggling with isolation and grief, he finds an unexpected ally in a mysterious robotic companion.
Together, they embark on an epic journey of self-discovery, facing numerous challenges and obstacles that test their courage and resilience. As they travel through perilous landscapes and encounter intriguing characters, they learn the importance of forging new connections and the transformative power of friendship and hope. Throughout their quest, the pair seeks to unravel the mystery of Project B.L.U.E., a hidden enigma that holds the key to understanding their world and themselves, when they uncover truths that challenge their perceptions and redefine what it means to be a family.

A notícia já circula! O escritor/editor Tom Marvelli está a lançar um novo universo de comics com a sua editora Another Door Comics, na sequência de uma carreira de sucesso na Marvel Comics e Hasbro como executivo de marca e de licenciamento, e eu participo na aventura. The Boy in the Bot explora o lado futurista/horror da BD independente e a campanha de financiamento foi agora lançada na Kickstarter e IndieGoGo. A novela gráfica começa a ser distribuida em Dezembro.
Fui contratado para ajudar na arte do livro, ao lado dos artistas Rafael Loureiro e Leo Rodrigues, do colorista Ren Spiller e capistas Daniela Rivera e Tracie Ching. Estou feliz por ajudar a criar estas novas personagens, em especial dada a alta qualidade de escrita de Tom, que está entre os melhores na área embora esta seja a estreia criativa.

Relativamente ao livro, The Boy in the Bot: What is Project B.L.U.E.? é o primeiro livro de uma trilogia de ficção científica, com uma aventura de 72 páginas que segue um rapaz solitário que, depois de sofrer uma perda trágica, tem de navegar pelas complexidades de um mundo adulto hostil. Lutando contra o isolamento e a dor, encontra um aliado inesperado num misterioso companheiro robótico.
Juntos, embarcam numa viagem épica de descoberta pessoal, enfrentando inúmeros desafios e obstáculos que testam a sua coragem e perseverança. À medida que viajam por paisagens perigosas e encontram personagens intrigantes, aprendem a importância de estabelecer novas ligações e o poder transformador da amizade e da esperança. Ao longo da sua busca, a dupla procura desvendar o mistério do Projeto B.L.U.E., um enigma oculto que contém a chave para compreender o mundo e a si próprios, quando descobrem verdades que desafiam as suas perceções e redefinem o que significa ser família.

Outras Bandas – Reprints / Reforço de tiragens

The Tágide collective ended the cycle of activity with the last award for the 2023 editions, which had as finalist the 10th fanzine, Outras Bandas #9. With this chapter complete, the group's trajectory remains available online, but fans can follow the new group, which debuted with the anthology April, Carnation Showers.
However, there is still a need for one more bow on the stage before the curtains fall – reprints of Outras Bandas. Although there are still copies available of the last four issues, some collectors have not purchased the initial titles so we will carry out a limited reinforcement of the print run of issues 0, 1, 3 and 5. The editions will be available in the coming weeks for online sale, at book fairs and comics festivals, while supplies last.

In total, here is the final sum of print runs – Outras Bandas #0 (150 copies), #1 (100), #2 (75), #3 (75), #4 (100), #5 (75), #6 (75), #7 (100), #8 (100), #9 (150) – resulting in 1000 copies published of this fanzine, of which around 50 were offered to critics and booksellers, and approximately 750ex sold throughout four years, publishing a total of 28 authors, in 50 short comics and 200 illustrations.


O colectivo Tágide encerrou o ciclo de actividade com o último prémio a edições de 2023, que teve como finalista o 10º fanzine, Outras Bandas #9. Concluído esse capítulo, o percurso do grupo fica disponível online, mas os fãs podem seguir o novo grupo, que se estreou com a antologia Abril, Cravos Mil.
Todavia, há ainda necessidade de mais um regresso ao palco antes do cair do pano – reedições do Outras Bandas. Embora ainda existam cópias disponíveis dos últimos quatro números, há coleccionadores que não adquiriram os títulos iniciais, pelo que vamos efectuar um limitado reforço de tiragem dos números 0, 1, 3 e 5. As edições vão estar disponíveis nas próximas semanas para venda online, feiras e festivais, até esgotar o stock.

Ao todo, eis o somatório final de tiragens – Outras Bandas #0 (150 exemplares), #1 (100), #2 (75), #3 (75), #4 (100), #5 (75), #6 (75), #7 (100), #8 (100), #9 (150) – resultando em 1000 cópias publicadas deste fanzine, das quais cerca de 50 foram oferecidas a críticos e a bedetecas, e dos quais sensivelmente 750ex foram vendidos em 4 anos, publicando ao todo 28 autores, em 50 BD curtas e 200 ilustrações.

Abril, Cravos Mil – Review (3) / Crítica (3)

April, Carnation Showers continues to receive professional reviews in the first few months after its release. Now, Luís Bernardino published his analysis in CentralComics.com...

“Sometimes we discover little cultural gems almost by chance. This was the case of the anthology Abril, Cravos Mil – Histórias de Liberdade, published by Montijo Township with the collaboration of the TágIIde group, an informal group of comic book authors created in 2024 and which inherited the ideals of the Tágide collective, which was active between 2019 and 2023.
In addition to allowing the activity of comics authors and the dissemination of the sociocultural message, this anthology of eight short comic books provides clues for young people to discover the reason for such an important date. If there is one thing I remember from [the Revolution of] April 25, 1974, it is the way in which culture, through all its facets and expressions, tried to make an almost illiterate country aware of a reality that had been carefully and purposefully hidden.
Comics were one of the easiest ways to convey messages and the ones that aroused the most curiosity. This anthology made me go back 50 years, and remember the importance of discovering this entire unknown society.

One of the problems with anthologies and collective works is that sometimes the small number of pages in each story does not allow the ideas to be developed, and in the end the work looks more like a patchwork quilt than a finished work. This is not the case. Daniel Maia's editorial coordination was very good and the final result deserves to be welcomed, touching on several points linked to the Revolution without creating major gaps.
The styles of each author are different, the graphic work is varied, the themes too, but the work as a whole is homogeneous and reads in a very pleasant continuity. The present authors are: Jorge RoD! Rodrigues, José Macedo Bandeira, Mário André, Patrícia Costa, António Coelho, Maria João Claré, Yves Darbos and Daniel Maia.

Softcover book with good binding, with good quality matte paper pages and good printing. An appropriate size for a popular book. Excellent cover by Susana Resende. Good price for the book in question.
April 25th always! It was one of the phrases that was most heard during these celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April. Essential so that you don't forget the fragile freedom achieved that day. And it's projects like this that keep that flame burning. It is in the name of this fundamental right that initiatives like this need to be cherished, so that we, our children and our grandchildren, can continue creating, without fear of reprisals.”

“Por vezes, descobrimos pequenas pérolas culturais quase por acaso. Foi o caso da antologia Abril, Cravos Mil – Histórias de Liberdade, editado pela Câmara Municipal do Montijo com a colaboração do grupo TágIIde, um grupo informal de autores de banda desenhada criado em 2024 e que herdou os ideais do coletivo Tágide, que esteve ativo entre 2019 e 2023.
Para além de permitir a atividade de autores de BD e a divulgação da mensagem sociocultural, esta antologia de oito curtas BDs, permite lançar pistas aos mais novos para que descubram o porquê de tão importante data. Se há coisa que recordo do 25 de Abril de 1974, é a forma como a cultura, através de todas as suas facetas e expressões, tentou que um país quase analfabeto tomasse conhecimento de uma realidade que tinha sido cuidadosamente e propositadamente escondida.
A BD era uma das formas mais fácil de passar mensagens e das que despertava mais curiosidade. Esta antologia fez-me voltar 50 anos atrás, e recordar a importância da descoberta de toda essa sociedade desconhecida.

Um dos problemas das antologias e das obras coletivas, é que por vezes o pequeno número de páginas de cada história não permite desenvolver as ideias, e no final a obra parece mais uma manta de retalhos que uma obra acabada. Não é este o caso. A coordenação editorial do Daniel Maia foi muito boa e o resultado final merece ser saudado, tocando em vários pontos ligados à Revolução sem criar grandes quebras.
Os estilos de cada autor são diferentes, o trabalho gráfico é variado, as temáticas também, mas a obra no seu todo é homogénea e lê-se numa continuidade muito agradável. Os autores presentes são: Jorge RoD! Rodrigues, José Macedo Bandeira, Mário André, Patrícia Costa, António Coelho, Maria João Claré, Yves Darbos e Daniel Maia.

Livro em capa mole com boa encadernação, com páginas em papel baço de boa qualidade e com boa impressão. Um tamanho adequado para um livro de divulgação. Excelente capa de Susana Resende. Bom preço para o livro em causa.
25 de Abril sempre! Foi uma das frases que mais se ouviu nestas comemorações dos 50 anos do 25 de Abril. Fundamental para que não se esqueça a frágil liberdade conquistada nesse dia. E são projetos como este que mantêm essa chama acesa. É em nome desse direito fundamental que iniciativas como esta têm de ser acarinhadas, para que nós, os nossos filhos e os nossos netos, possamos continuar a criar, sem medo de represálias.“
