Layout O Infante Portugal

Novo teaser do vindouro 3º livro d’O Infante Portugal: um esboço de BD curta incluída como extra. Fi-lo como surpresa para o autor, José de Matos-Cruz, baseado no conto original que começou a saga do Infante (disponível neste link) e ele sugeriu inclui-lo na publicação, “fechando o ciclo” à história, que havia sido editada no primeiro livro, também como um extra.

Tencionei fazer algo rápido e tosco, como se vê na imagem inicial, mas escapou-me e acabei-o quase como se fosse um desenho final ou “breakdown,” embora feito directamente a caneta… Dado que a temática do super-herói é aqui jogada com sofisticação e nuance intelectual, seria redutivo tentar explicar o que decorre nas sequências, pelo que não vou sequer tentar. Vejam-no por vocês e façam a própria leitura;)

A new teaser of the forthcoming 3rd book of O Infante Portugal: a layout for a short story featured therein as an extra. I did it as a surprise for the author, José de Matos-Cruz, based on the original tale that started the Infante’s saga (available here) and he suggested including it in the publication, “closing cicle” to the story, which had been printed in the first book, also as an extra.

I meant to do it roughly, as the first image shows, but it got away from me and I ended it as if almost penciled or a “breakdown,” even if done directly with pen… Given that the superhero theme is played there with a sophisticated and intellectual edge, it would be reductive to just narrate what the sequences are meant to show us, so I’m not even going to try. Just check it and make your own interpretation;)

Vintage Paparazzi

Improvisei este esboço há um mês, para ilustrar uma proposta de publicidade para uma empresa de cosmética internacional. Foi feito em contra-relógio e teve de desenhado digitalmente porque não havia tempo de digitalizar & limpar um esboço artesanal. Não ficou fantástico, mas dada a circunstância extrema e atendendo a que não desenhava com a Wacom há algum tempo, saiu razoável…

I worked up this sketch a month ago, to illustrate an advertising pitch for an international cosmetic company. It was done under the gun and had to be drawn digitally ‘cause I hadn’t time to scan & clean a usual hand-drawn sketch. It’s not great, but under the dire circumstances and given I hadn’t drawn with a Wacom for some time, it came out alright…

Layout I - Gwaa!

A minha namorada sugeriu que, dado eu ver as coisas e “pensá-las” em sequência (por defeito), faria mais sentido rabiscar pequenas acções e historietas quando estamos fora, em vez de apenas esboçar figuras e composições. Achei a ideia genial; basicamente, pegar em cenas que me chamem atenção e construir a partir dali, retractando a situação como decorrida ou deixando a imaginação voar.

Isto, supostamente, é para ser feito fluídamente e esboçado, por ser um exercício, não um trabalho efectivo que outros vão ver, mas dado ser a primeira tentativa, acabei por refinar os esboços. No caso em questão, um tipo levou uma ave exótica para uma cafetaria e estava nitidamente a tentar dar nas vistas através do pássaro, empoleirado no ombro. O bicho estava a incomodar as pessoas com o barulho que fazia, mas o dono decerto pensava que o estavam a mirar devido ao pássaro. Por issooo, acabei por desenhar o que gostava que tivesse acontecido… ;) 

My girlfriend suggested once that, since I saw things and “thought” them in sequences (by default), it made more sense that I’d doodled short actions or stories instead of just sketching figures and compositions when we were out. I think she was onto something; basically, just start off with some scene that catches my eye and build from there, depicting it as happened or letting theimagination fly.

This is supposed to be done fluidly and sketchy, as it’s an exercise of practice, not an actual work to be viewed by others, but given it was my first attempt I wound up finessing the sketches. Case in point, some guy took his exotic bird out to coffee shop and was obviously trying to get attention through the bird, perched on his should. The thing was annoying people there with all the noise, but the guy surely thought they were looking at him due to the bird. Soooo, I kind’a drew what I wished would’ve happened… ;)

Banner in Central Comics #1

Aqui vai alguma energia positiva, para contrariar os efeitos desta sexta-feira 13, na forma dum novo banner do Portal Central Comics. Agora, de que modo este detalhe de ilustração tem afinidades ao 3º livro d’O Infante Portugal, temos de esperar para ver… ;)

Here’s some positive energy, to try to counter the effects of this Friday, the 13th, in the form of a new banner for the Central Comics Portal. But just how this illustration detail relates to the 3^rd book of the Infante Portugal saga, remains to be seen… ;)
