The Boy in the Bot – Webtoons

Another Door Comics has launched on Webtoons a story sampler of The Boy in the Bot’s 1st volume, for free. Check out the comic on this popular platform and get to know the characters with these weekly full-color chapters, ahead of the crowdfunding for vol.2 later this year.
Episode 1 & 2 are now online, and they feature my prologue sequence, written by Tom Marvelli and colors by Renato Spiller.

The Boy in the Bot vol.2 – Pre-launch / Pré-lançamento

Author/publisher Tom Marvelli, who premiered his fictional universe at the end of last year through his Another Door Comics self-publishing seal, starting with the edition of the inaugural volume of The Boy in the Bot trilogy, has just announced the start of the pre-launch of the 2nd book, titled The Hunt for Project B.L.U.E. Campaigns are again active on the Kickstarter and IndieGoGo platforms, and readers who register early will get a free poster!
This new graphic novel is written by Tom Marvelli, who also draws a backup comic and variant cover, and has art by Leo Rodrigues and colors by Renato Spiller. The main cover is drawn by me, with colors by Renato.

O autor/editor Tom Marvelli, que estreou no final do ano passado o seu universo ficcional autoral, através da sua chancela Another Door Comics, começando pela edição do volume inaugural da trilogia The Boy in the Bot, acaba de anunciar a abertura do pré-lançamento do 2º volume, intitulado The Hunt for Project B.L.U.E. As campanhas voltam a estar activas nas plataformas Kickstarter e IndieGoGo, e os leitores que se assinalarem cedo beneficiam de um poster de oferta!
Este novo álbum é escrito por Tom Marvelli, que também assina uma BD curta adicional e capa variante, e tem arte de Leo Rodrigues e cor de Renato Spiller. A capa principal é desenhada por mim, cor cor de Renato.

CoBrA in Catarse – 50% of goal | CoBrA no Catarse – 50% da meta

The Catarse crowdfunding campaign for the brazilian edition of CoBrA: Operation Goa, by me (artwork) and Marco Calhorda (script), has reached halfway of its goal after a month, with another month left to go. We are tremendously thankful for brazil’s readers’ support and hope to get to 100% over the coming weeks.

We have promoted the success the book has received with Ala dos Livros' edition in 2022, getting over twenty extremely positive reviews by critics, including in national sindicated television, and a selection into the Ler+ program, plus being the most nominated portuguese graphic novel in that awards cycle.
The book also currently has several foreign editions being considered, but it would be great if Brazil was at the forefront of that, given we share the same language and culture, and that it was a country also pressured by a decades long ditactorship – similar to the context where CoBrA takes place.

A campanha de financiamento coletivo do Catarse para a edição brasileira de CoBrA: Operação Goa, da minha autoria (arte) e Marco Calhorda (arg.), atingiu metade da meta ao fim de um mês, faltando outro mês para concluir. Estamos imensamente gratos pelo apoio dos leitores brasileiros e esperamos chegar aos 100% nas próximas semanas.

Temos promovido o sucesso que o livro teve com a edição Ala dos Livros em 2022, obtendo mais de vinte análises extremamente positivas por parte da crítica especializada, incluindo na televisão nacional e a selecção no programa Ler+, para além de ser o álbum português mais nomeado naquele ciclo de prémios.
O álbum tem também publicações estrangeiras a serem consideradas, mas seria ótimo que o Brasil estivesse na vanguarda de tal, visto que partilhamos a mesma língua e cultura, e também por ter sido um país pressionado por uma ditadura de décadas – semelhante ao contexto em que o CoBrA decorre.

SINtra fan-art

Drawn a couple of years ago, this SINtra fan-art features the monstruous Elvira from the Sintra region’s folklore, who is a main character in the 2017’ horror graphic novel by writer Tiago Cruz and artist Inês Casais, marking their editorial debut. My artwork was created for the book’s upcoming extended reedition.

Vinheta d’Ouro 2025: Best Short Comic Nominations / Nomeações de Melhor BD Curta

My short comic “The Most Beautiful Insubordination”, featured in April, Carnation Showers’ anthology, has been nominated for Best Short Comic by Portuguese Author in Vinheta d’Ouro awards. This prize is promoted since 2021 by reviewer/columnist Hugo Pinto at his Vinheta2020 blog and is helped by a couple dozen of comics authors and reviewers, with the awarding ceremony being transmited via YouTube.

This is my first nomination in this award and I’m happy for the consideration. ‘The Most Beautiful Insubordination’ was previously nominated for Best Short Comic at the 6th BD Awards, which leaves me humbled by the recognition already acchieved, especially since it aims to homage one of Portugal’s most beloved artists, João Abel Manta, depicting (briefly) how he fought against the New State dictatorship with his satirical cartoons. A minha BD curta “A Mais Bela Insubordinação”, publicada na antologia Abril, Cravos Mil, foi nomeada para Melhor BD Curta por Autor Português nos prémios Vinheta d’Ouro. Este prémio é promovido desde 2021 pelo crítico/colunista Hugo Pinto no blogue Vinheta2020 e tem o apoio de um grupo de autores e críticos de banda desenhada, sendo a cerimónia de entrega dos prémios transmitida via YouTube.

Esta é a minha primeira nomeação no prémio e estou feliz pela consideração. ‘A Mais Bela Insubordinação’ foi anteriormente nomeada para Melhor BD Curta no 6º Prémio Bandas Desenhadas, o que me lisonjeia pelo reconhecimento já obtido, tanto mais que pretende homenagear um dos artistas mais acarinhados em Portugal, João Abel Manta, retratando (brevemente) a sua luta contra a ditadura do Estado Novo através de cartoons políticos. CoBrA at Catarse | CoBrA no Catarse

The pre-sale campaign for the Brazilian edition of CoBrA: Operation Goa, by Quadriculando, is about to start on the Catarse platform!
After being a finalist in all of Portugal's comics awards, including the prestigious Amadora BD '2022, in Best Graphic Novel Edition by Portuguese Author, and being the runner-up in the XX Central Comics Trophies in the categories of Best Portuguese Publication and Best Portuguese Drawing, the CoBrA trilogy’s first volume was also the year’s most reviewed GN by the country's critics and was suggested reading on SIC Notícias news program, and was also recently elected on the Ler+ program (National Reading Plan).

CoBrA is a collection of self-contained eurocomics written by Marco Calhorda, whose initial book is drawn by Daniel Maia (X: Siege and The Boy in the Bot).
Operation Goa narrates the invasion of Portuguese Goa by the Indian Union in 1961, at a time when the military contingent was reduced and poorly armed, resulting in 3,000 prisoners of war and 30 soldiers killed in three days of conflict. Led by the enigmatic Jorge Jardim, the secret agency CoBrA, with limited resources, carries out clandestine actions and influence maneuvers to free the military detained for three months in precarious conditions, against the will of Nehru's Indian government and against the objectives of Salazar's dictatorship in Portugal. An unknown story of geopolitical intrigue, military action and personal redemption, which was a catalyst for the Overseas War that began in the 1970s.

OverPower: World of Legends – Illustration / Ilustração (4)

Yet another of my artwork contributions for the upcoming revival of the OverPower collectible card game has been spotlighted online, thus allowing me to showcase the piece. This drawing was actually the first I did for the project, back in 2024.
In this one, the hero is none other than Joan of Arc, here featured at her most ethereal and unscathed in the midst of battle.

Mais uma das minhas contribuições artísticas para o vindouro lançamento do jogo de cartas colecionáveis OverPower foi divulgada online, o que me permitiu partilhar a imagem. Este desenho foi na realidade o primeiro que fiz para o projeto, ainda em 2024.
Aqui, a heroína é nada mais nada menos que Joana d'Arc, aqui retratada no seu estado mais etéreo e ilesa no meio da batalha.

Fernando Pessoa: Top 2024

Journalista/writer Ricardo Belo de Morais, also curator of Pessoa House, spotlighted yesterday in his Radio Movimento PT Online programa, “Pessoa para todas as Pessoas”, his top ten favorite books released last year about famous portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935). Among the many books that were published about Pessoa in 2024 – which underlines the sustained literary phenomenon around the world-renown poet and thinker from Lisbon, of whom Portuguese publishers continue to offer new books year after year, from discovered original works to reeditions and essays – are featured 3 editions relevant to the comics community.
Morais' subjective criteria favored the cultural value of these ten works and their “unique characteristics of originality, pioneering or relevance and clarity of information, or even the novelty brought in their pages”, now that we are about to mark the 90th anniversary of Pessoa's death on November 30th.

One of the three graphic novels highlighted is Quaresma, the Decipherer: The Death of Don John, adapted by Mário André, with a special mention to my afterword, that published an academic study on the adaptations of Pessoa's works and himself featured in comics worldwide, “giving the work an unusual added value”.
The two other books are the graphic novel The Message, adapted by Pedro Moura and Susa Monteiro, and the children book Fernando Pessoa – The Child that Dreamt, by André Morgado and Tainan Rocha.

O jornalista/escritor Ricardo Belo de Morais, também curador da Casa Pessoa, destacou ontem no seu programa da Rádio Movimento PT Online, “Pessoa para todas as Pessoas”, os seus dez livros favoritos lançados no ano passado sobre o famoso poeta português Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) . Entre os muitos livros que foram publicados sobre Pessoa em 2024 – que sublinham o fenómeno literário sustentado em torno do poeta e pensador alfacinha de renome mundial, de quem as editoras portuguesas continuam a oferecer novos livros ano após ano, desde obras originais descobertas a reedições e ensaios – são apresentadas 3 edições relevantes para a comunidade da banda desenhada.
Os critérios subjectivos de Morais privilegiaram o valor cultural destas dez obras e as suas “características únicas de originalidade, pioneirismo ou pertinência e clareza de informação, ou mesmo a novidade trazida nas suas páginas”, agora que estamos prestes a assinalar os 90 anos do falecimento de Pessoa, a 30 de Novembro.

Um dos três álbuns em destaque é Quaresma, o Decifrador: A Morte de Dom João, adaptada por Mário André, com um destaque feito ao meu posfácio, com um estudo académico sobre as adaptações das obras de Pessoa e dele próprio apresentadas em banda desenhada a nível mundial, “conferindo à obra uma inusitada mais-valia”.
Os outros dois livros são a banda desenhada A Mensagem, adaptada por Pedro Moura e Susa Monteiro, e o livro infantil Fernando Pessoa – A Criança que Sonhava, de André Morgado e Tainan Rocha.

2024: Aftermath / Rescaldo

It’s been a long year. This recap has a silverlining because, aside various other editions, 2024 marks my return to the comics industry.
The year began with news that CoBrA: Op. Goa, with Marco Calhorda (script), will have a Brazil release through publisher Quadriculando. While at it, I also collaborated in the publisher’s annual anthology title Giby #3, with my short comic with Pedro Moura (script), “Deluge”, originally part of Cthulhu Sadino.
Later in the year, I got the great news that CoBrA was selected for Ler+ program, a govermental iniciative that promotes the most meaningful editions for school and public libraries. It was a big acchievement, and it was followed by a panel from the graphic novel being sellected to showcase comic-book inking in the Prep School manual for Visual Arts from Porto Publisher.

Right after, I participated on the debut of portuguese comics group TágIIde, April, Carnation Showers - Stories of Freedom, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution. I both coordinated the book and was featured as guest artist, contributing with a short comic that homages renowned cartoonist João Abel Manta.
Better still was to see the book winning the 6th Bandas Desenhadas Awards for Best Anthology later in the year, plus having my story “The Most Beautiful Insubordination” nominated as Best Short Comic!

Around this time I participated in a few events: in the 6h CoimbraBD, with the exibition “Umbigo do Mundo – Homage to Alma”, later also held at Cult bookstore and Bedeteca do Porto; at the 7th Contacto festival, with the exhibition “From Words to Comics”; and not long after I also attended the 19th FIBDB, for the release of Quaresma, the Deciferer vol.3, with a investigation by me on “Fernando Pessoa in Comics”, and presentation of Eduardo Lourenço – Fiction of Himself project. The respective teaser was released at the 35th Amadora BD festival, where it soldout in one day(!).
Aditionally, I partook in the 2nd exhibition "JuveBêDê - Drawn Autographs", held at Montemor-o-Novo city gallery.

In the last quarter I pulled out the big cards – literally! First, I helped announce OverPower: World of Legends card game, for which I contributed several illustrations. A famous tabletop brand that returns after three decades!
Plus another project was announced, one that returned me to drawing american comics – The Boy in the Bot by writer/publisher Tom Marvelli. The first volume What is Project B.L.U.E.? was released in December, after a short and successful crowdfunding campaign, with more releases to follow in 2025.
And lastly, I also contributed to the humanitarian initiative "Superheroes for Peace", promoted by ACNUR - ONU Agency for Refugees, to which I created a new character and illustration to help garner donations. My work and others were later published in a magazine.

Finally, regarding awards, 2024 was also a memorable year, starting with an award for Best Short Comic of the Decade 2013-2024 in the II Trophies Central Comics: HD, for “The Infante Portugal in Gathered Universes”, with writer José de Matos-Cruz, which won with 25% of votes from the readers. I was also nominated in the XXI TCC award, for Best Independent Publication, Best Short Comics and Best Webcomic.

At the very end of the year, I presented the study I conducted throughout 2024 regarding Portugal's comic book market, which registered the historic record of publications in the country, following my research from twenty years ago.
In 2025, I will have lots of new works to share. Can’t wait for you all to see those.

Foi um ano longo. Esta recapitulação tem um lado positivo porque, para além de várias outras edições, 2024 marca o meu regresso à indústria de comics.
O ano começou com a notícia de que CoBrA: Op. Goa, com Marco Calhorda (arg.), terá lançamento no Brasil pela editora Quadriculando. Nesta altura, colaborei também na antologia anual da editora, Giby #3, com a BD curta com Pedro Moura (arg.), “Dilúvio”, originalmente parte de Cthulhu Sadino.
No final do ano, recebi a excelente notícia de que CoBrA foi selecionado no programa Ler+, uma iniciativa governamental que promove as edições mais significativas para as bibliotecas escolares e públicas. Foi um grande feito, e foi seguido pela selecção de uma vinheta do álbum ter sido escolhida para demonstrar arte-final em BD no manual escolar de Educação Visual da Porto Editora.

Logo a seguir participei na estreia do grupo autoral TágIIde, em Abril, Cravos Mil - Histórias de Liberdade, que celebrou os 50 anos da Revolução dos Cravos. Coordenei o livro e fui artista convidado, contribuindo com uma pequena banda desenhada que homenageia o conceituado cartoonista João Abel Manta.
Melhor ainda foi no final do ano ver o livro ganhar o 6º Prémio Banda Desenhada como Melhor Antologia, para além de ter a minha história “A Mais Bela Insubordinação” nomeada como Melhor BD Curta!

Por esta altura participei em alguns eventos: no 6º CoimbraBD, com a exposição “Umbigo do Mundo – Homenagem à Alma”, mais tarde também patente na livraria Cult e Bedeteca do Porto; no 7º festival Contacto, com a exposição “Das Palavras à BD”; e depois participei também no 19º FIBDB, com lançamento de Quaresma, o Decifrador vol.3, com investigação minha sobre “Fernando Pessoa em Banda Desenhada”, e apresentação do projecto Eduardo Lourenço – Ficção de Si. O respectivo teaser foi lançado no 35º festival Amadora BD, onde esgotou num dia(!).
Adicionalmente, voltei a integrar a 2ª exposição "JuveBêDê - Autógrafos Desenhados", na galeria de Montemor-o-Novo.

No último trimestre puxei dos trunfos – literalmente! Em primeiro lugar, ajudei a publicitar o jogo de cartas OverPower: World of Legends, para o qual contribuí com várias ilustrações. Uma famosa marca de mesa que regressa depois de três décadas!
Além disso, foi anunciado oo projeto que me devolveu aos comics americanos – The Boy in the Bot, do escritor/editor Tom Marvelli. O primeiro volume What is Project B.L.U.E.? foi lançado em dezembro, após uma curta e bem-sucedida campanha em crowdfunding, com mais lançamentos em perspectiva para 2025.
E finalmente, também contribuí para a iniciativa humanitária "Super-Heróis pela Paz" promovida pela ACNUR, para a qual criei uma nova personagem e ilustração para ajudar a angariar donativos. O meu trabalho e outros foram depois publicados em revista.

Por fim, no que diz respeito a prémios, 2024 foi também um ano memorável, começando com o prémio de Melhor Obra Curta da Década 2013-2024 nos II Troféus Central Comics: HD, para “O Infante Portugal em Universos Reunidos”, com o escritor José de Matos-Cruz, que venceu com 25% dos votos dos leitores. Fui ainda nomeado no XXI TCC, em Melhor Publicação Independente, Melhor Obra Curta e Melhor Webcomic.

Na recta final do ano, apresentei o estudo que realizei durante 2024 sobre o mercado de BD em Portugal, que registou o recorde histórico de edições no país, comparando com a minha investigação realizada há vinte anos.
Em 2025, terei muitos trabalhos novos para partilhar. Mal posso esperar para que todos vocês os vejam.
