1st Camões Comics and Animation Festival | 1º Festival de BD e Animação Camões

Camões Secondary School (Lisbon) held this week the 1st Camões Comics and Animation Festival, coordinated by teachers António Sales, Elsa Costa and Filipe Duarte, with a short program that aims to introduce young students to the world of comics. The lineup invited authors Daniel Maia (myself) and Rita Alfaiate for a comic book presentation and workshop, respectively, plus a comics competition.

For my part, I had the opportunity to speak briefly about the fundamental concepts of comic book creation and my own practice, using as an example the production of graphic novel CoBrA: Operation Goa (Ala dos Livros), and I also spoke about the international industry, with reference to project The Boy in the Bot.

A Escola Secundária Camões (Lisboa) promoveu esta semana o 1º Festival de BD e Animação Camões, coordenado pelos professores António Sales, Elsa Costa e Filipe Duarte, com um breve programa que visa introduzir os jovens alunos no mundo da banda desenhada. O programa convidou os autores Daniel Maia (eu próprio) e Rita Alfaiate para uma apresentação de BD e workshop, respectivamente, mais um concurso.

Pela minha parte, tive a oportunidade de falar brevemente sobre os conceitos fundamentais de criação de BD e a minha própria prática, usando como exemplo a produção do álbum CoBrA: Operação Goa (Ala dos Livros), e falei ainda sobre a indústria internacional, com referência ao projecto The Boy in the Bot.

JuveBêDê #100 [Associação Juvemedia]

The JuveBêDê #100 magazine was presented at the 6th CoimbraBD, thus marking an unusual feat for the magazine in the Portuguese publishing scene, on the same date that marks the 28th anniversary of the Juvemedia Association project.
With a cover by Luís Louro, the edition was marked by 43 drawings commemorating the 100th issue, by Portuguese authors and artists from Spain, France, Italy and Brazil. For my part, I partook with a previously unpublished digital work that I retouched for this purpose.

A revista JuveBêDê #100 foi apresentada no 6º CoimbraBD, marcando assim um feito incomum do título no panorama editorial português, na mesma data que se celebra o 28º aniversário do projecto da Associação Juvemedia.
Com capa de Luís Louro, a edição foi marcada por 43 desenhos comemorativos do 100º número, por autores portugueses e de Espanha, França, Itália e Brasil. Pela minha parte, marquei presença com uma arte digital inédita que retoquei para este propósito.

6º CoimbraBD - Photos / Fotos

The 6th CoimbraBD comics festival took place at Convento S. Francisco last weekend and it was an amazing event, easily ranking among the top 5 pop culture conventions in Portugal. My thanks to the promoters for having invited me and to the fans who stopped by my table.
As always, I had little chance to check out the event, having arrived just in time to setup my table at Artists’ Alley and head out for my presentation, concerning Another Door Comics projects to which I’m working for, such as Apparition Metempsychosis.

During the afternoon I signed many books, sold prints and original artworks, and had the chance to let the fans know about the projects I have been working on. Plus, here and there, I got to chat a bit with fellow artists and old colleagues. Overall, it was an exaustive but awesome day!

O 6º CoimbraBD decorreu no Convento S. Francisco no passado fim-de-semana e confirmou-se como um evento incrível, facilmente classificado entre as 5 principais convenções de cultura pop em Portugal. O meu agradecimento aos promotores por me terem convidado e aos fãs que passaram pela minha mesa.
Como sempre, tive pouca oportunidade de experienciar o evento, tendo chegado a tempo apenas de montar a minha mesa no Artists’ Alley e de seguir para a minha apresentação sobre os projetos da Another Door Comics em que estou a trabalhar, como Apparition Metempsychosis.

Durante a tarde, autografei vários livros, vendi prints e trabalhos originais, e tive a oportunidade de contar aos fãs sobre os projetos em que tenho estado a trabalhar. Além disso, aqui e ali, consegui conversar um pouco com outros artistas e antigos colegas. No geral, foi um dia exaustivo, mas recompensador!

6º Coimbra BD

6th CoimbraBD, the largest comics festival in the center of Portugal, opens its doors in Convento S. Francisco this weekend. The program for the inauguration on April 25th to 27th was recently announced, and with that my first time participation in the event was also spotlighted.
On April 26th, at 11:30am, I will present my new project, Apparition Metempsychosis, the next trilogy by Tom Marvelli and his publisher Another Door Comics, for which I have collaborated on The Boy in the Bot. Although the first book will only be released in the last quarter, come by for this first glimpse of the work.

During the afternoon, I will also be at the artists' area, available for book signings and chat.

Este fim de semana decorre o 6º CoimbraBD, o maior festival de banda desenhada no centro do país, com lugar no Convento S. Francisco. Foi recentemente divulgado o programa da inauguração nos dias 25 a 27 de Abril, e com isso foi igualmente indicada a minha participação no evento, pela primeira vez.
No dia 26, às 11h30, vou apresentar o meu novo projecto, Apparition Metempsychosis, a próxima trilogia de Tom Marvelli e da sua editora Another Door Comics, para a qual tenho colaborado em The Boy in the Bot. Embora o primeiro volume só vá ser publicado no último trimestre, apareçam para este primeiro vislumbre do trabalho.

Durante a tarde, vou igualmente estar presente na área de artistas, disponível para autógrafos e conversa.

Radio Movimento – Fernando Pessoa in Comics / Fernando Pessoa em BD

A few weeks ago I was interviewed at Radio Movimento’s ‘Fernando Pessoa for Everyone’s program, at the invitation by host Ricardo Belo de Morais. There, we discussed my 2024’ article about Fernando Pessoa’s adaptations to graphic novels and short comics, which was published in Quaresma, the Decipherer vol.3 and soon in Bang! #37.

Há duas semanas fui entrevistado na Rádio Movimento, no programa ‘Fernando Pessoa para Todas as Pessoas’, após convite pelo anfitrião Ricardo Belo de Morais. A conversa focou-se no meu artigo de 2024 sobre as adaptações de Fernando Pessoa em romances gráficos e bandas desenhadas curtas, publicado em Quaresma, o Decifrador vol.3 e em breve em Bang! #37.

3º Maia BD – Comics festival / Festival de Banda Desenhada

Last month I was announced as one of the Portuguese authors present at the 3rd Maia BD comics festial, which takes place between May 23-25. It will be a pleasure to return to the north, which I haven’t visited professionally since the early years of CCPT, and now to contribute to this new festival that is establishing itself in the city of Maia (... let's witheld the jokes about my surname).
The event program will be released soon, with the days of my attendance and activities I will carry out. For now I'll share the promotional highlights…

No mês passado fui anunciado como um dos autores portugueses presentes no 3º Maia BD, que decorre entre 23-25 de Maio. Vai ser um prazer regressar ao norte, que já não visitava profissionalmente desde os primeiros anos da CCPT, e agora para contribuir para este novo festival que se afirma na cidade da Maia (...vamos dispensar as piadas ao meu apelido).
Em breve vai ser divulgado o programa do evento, com os dias da minha presença e as actividades que irei realizar. Para já divulgo os destaques promocionais...

CoBrA: Operação Goa – Crowdfunding sucess! / Campanha de sucesso!

The crowdfunding campaign I previously announced was successfully completed this week, reaching 116% of its goal! Quadriculando publisher will now continue on with producing the graphic novel’s adaptation into Brazilian Portuguese and will release CoBrA: Operation Goa in Brazil’s book market around the end of the month.
Although I’m not a stranger to readers from Brazil, after my five participations in Chiaroscuro Studios‘ Yearbooks and a few other indie projects, this edition has a great significance as it is the first authorial work that I publish in Brazil (with writer Marco Calhorda) and also marks the first internationalization of the book – and, we hope, not the last.

Many thanks to the supporters and promoters who helped us broadcast the campaign and reach our goal!

A campanha de financiamento que divulguei anteriormente concluiu esta semana com sucesso, atingindo 116% da meta! A editora Quadriculando procede com a produção da adaptação do álbum para português do Brasil e vai lançar CoBrA: Operação Goa no mercado brasileiro no final do mês.
Embora não seja estranho a leitores do país-irmão, após cinco participações nos Yearbooks da Chiaroscuro Studios e mais alguns projectos indie, esta edição tem um grande significado, pois é o primeiro trabalho autoral que edito no Brasil (com o escritor Marco Calhorda) e também marca a primeira internacionalização da obra – esperamos, não a última.

Plans for 2025 | Planos para 2025

We’re well into 2025 and it’s time to lift the veil on what’s upcoming…

A big chuck of my year will be focused on the second trilogy of Tom Marvelli’s Another Door Comics, for now titled W. This series takes place in the universe of The Boy in the Bot – for which I drew the prologue in vol.1 and cover for vol.2. Aside from Tom’s writing and covers, Renato Spiller will be the colorist.
This is the most exciting and ambitious independent creator-owned project currently ongoing in US comics market and you shouldn’t miss out. There’s still time to get caught up with vol.1, while the sequel goes into post-production.
As for solo work, I will finally release my history/adventure book Mala-Posta, on Portugal’s postal service in the last days of the Victorian Era, in which I’m joined by artists Daniel Henriques and Susana Resende.

Also, it seems that the brazilian edition of CoBrA: Operation Goa will acchieve its goal, being released soon by Quadriculando through crowdfunding. Hopefully, we will have a few more translations in Europe in the foreseable future.

Regarding anthologies, I have a few to look forward to where I contributed short comics. I can’t announce them all yet, but the first has been done for sometime now and will be released in the summer through my publisher Arga Warga: it’s a compilation of the Weird Corpse! collective comic from 2007-2015, which will be in print for the first time. As far as I’m aware, not only is this the lengthiest collective comic created in Portugal, but also ranks 5th longest in the world!
The other two are both institutional books with social awareness intent and presented in the last quarter.

There will be three magazines featuring work of mine throughout the year. And lastly, the collectible card game OverPower: World of Legends will also be out, fulfilling the record-breaking crowdfunding success.

I have a few other surprises reserved and a looot of work ahead. Kill me now...

Estamos avançados em 2025 e é tempo de levantar a ponta do véu sobre o que vem a caminho... Grande parte do meu ano vai ser focada na segunda trilogia de Another Door Comics de Tom Marvelli, por ora intitulada W. Esta série passa-se no universo de The Boy in the Bot – para o qual desenhei o prólogo no vol.1 e a capa do vol.2. Além da escrita de Tom e das capas alternativas, Renato Spiller será o colorista.
Este é o projeto independente mais entusiasmante e ambicioso actualmente em curso no mercado de comics dos EUA e não devem de o perder. Ainda há tempo para ler o vol. 1, enquanto a sequela entra em pós-produção.
Quanto ao trabalho a solo, irei finalmente lançar o livro de história/aventura Mala-Posta, sobre o serviço postal de Portugal nos últimos dias da Era Vitoriana, no qual sou acompanhado pelos artistas Daniel Henriques e Susana Resende.

E parece que a versão brasileira de CoBrA: Operação Goa vai atingir o objectivo em crowdfunding, sendo publicada em breve pela Quadriculando. Espero que haja mais traduções no mercado europeu no futuro próximo.

Em relação a antologias, tenho algumas em preparação, nas quais contribuí com bandas desenhadas curtas. Ainda não posso anunciar todas, mas o primeiro já está em andamento há algum tempo e será lançado no Verão pela minha editora Arga Warga: é uma compilação de Cadáver Esquisito!, uma banda desenhada coletiva de 2007-2015, que será impressa pela primeira vez. Tanto quanto sei, esta não é apenas a BD colectiva mais longa criada em Portugal, como é também a 5ª mais longa do mundo!
Os outros dois são livros institucionais com o intuito de consciencialização social e prevê-se que sejam apresentados no último trimestre.

Haverá ainda três revistas a apresentar o meu trabalho ao longo do ano. E, por fim, será também lançado o jogo de cartas colecionáveis OverPower: World of Legends, na sequência do sucesso em crowdfunding.

Tenho algumas outras surpresas reservadas e muito trabalho pela frente. Matem-me agora…

The Boy in the Bot – Webtoons

Another Door Comics has launched on Webtoons a story sampler of The Boy in the Bot’s 1st volume, for free. Check out the comic on this popular platform and get to know the characters with these weekly full-color chapters, ahead of the crowdfunding for vol.2 later this year.
Episode 1 & 2 are now online, and they feature my prologue sequence, written by Tom Marvelli and colors by Renato Spiller.

Last year I had a couple requests for commissions and sketch-covers, all of which of Marvel Comics heroes. Here are some of those preliminary sketches and pencils for DareDevil, Juggernaut and SpiderGhost.
