7º Coimbra BD

The City of Coimbra, in partnership with GuesTheChoice, recently announced the 7th Coimbra BD, the comics and pop culture festival that has been held in the City of Loves since 2018.
After surpassing the +18,000 visitors mark last year, the event returns to the Convent of São Francisco between April 24-26, where visitors can enjoy a varied program, including exhibitions, book fairs, autograph sessions, interaction with artists, RPG and Cosplay contests, workshops, plus presentations and discussion panels. This year I was invited as the spotlight Portuguese author, illustrating the official poster’s image, which features the hero Infante Portugal, created by José de Matos-Cruz in a literary trilogy, and with whom I adapted it into a comic book in 2017. As the main protagonist in Matos-Cruz's fictional universe, the character was developed in twenty publications since 2004, including prose books, chapbooks, comics and anthologies, having been originally conceptualized by the master José Garcês, from whom I inherited the hero’s graphic torch.

In addition to attending the festival for autographs and at the Artist's Alley, I will be promoting the release of Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One – The Moment of Sin, from Another Door Comics, by Thomas Marvelli, and also launching A Caneta era a Lei – Tributo a Robert E. Howard, by Arga Warga Edições, an anthology by a talented group of Portuguese and PALOP artists, celebrating the 120th anniversary of the birth of the "Father of Sword and Sorcery".

A Câmara Municipal de Coimbra, em parceria com a empresa GuesTheChoice, anunciou recentemente o 7º Coimbra BD, o festival de banda desenhada e cultura pop, que decorre na Cidade dos Amores desde 2018.
Depois de ultrapassar os +18,000 visitantes no ano passado, o evento regressa ao Convento de São Francisco entre 24-26 de Abril, onde os visitantes podem desfrutar de uma programação variada, como exposições, feiras de livro, autógrafos, interação com artistas, concursos de RPG e Cosplay, workshops, mais apresentações e colóquios. Este ano fui convidado como autor português em destaque, ilustrando a imagem do cartaz oficial, na qual figura o herói Infante Portugal, criado por José de Matos-Cruz em trilogia literária e com quem o adaptei para BD em 2017. A personagem protagoniza o universo ficcional de Matos-Cruz, desenvolvido em vinte publicações desde 2004, entre livros de prosa, livros de cordel, revistas e álbuns antológicos, tendo sido originalmente conceptualizado pelo mestre José Garcês, de quem herdei o testemunho gráfico do herói.

Além de estar presente no festival em autógrafos e no Artist’ Alley, vou promover a edição de Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One – The Moment of Sin, da Another Door Comics, por Thomas Marvelli, e ainda lançar A Caneta era a Lei – Tributo a Robert E. Howard, pela Arga Warga Edições, uma antologia com um grupo talentoso de artistas portugueses e PALOP, que celebra o 120º aniversário do nascimento do “Pai da Espada e Feitiçaria”.

Apparition Metempsychosis – WIPs III / Diário de Produção III

This Apparition Metempsychosis’ WIP features a high-octane opening chase sequence through the rundown streets of Port-au-Prince, after a harrowing rescue from the local drug gangster. The fight ends in a secure building, sieged by the bad guys, where a crucial scene takes place.

 

This sequence was a lot of fun to layout and draw, although I had to make choices regarding the clutter out in the streets, because to include all the dystopian details of real-life Port-au-Prince would make the panels too filled, enough to impede the readers reading experience.

The truck vs bikes spread was a bit of a nightmare to get through, because of the slight fish-eye, twisty perspective, plus the more practical aspects of drawing’ smudging. In fact, something infuriating took place while drawing with colored pencils: the wax tends to fade quickly when exposed to envyroment and I just so happened to place the left page nearby the window for a couple of days before getting around to inking it, therefore, when I noticed, the drawing had mostly faded!…

Este diário de produção de Apparition Metempsychosis apresenta uma sequência de perseguição brutal nas ruas decadentes de Porto-Príncipe, após um resgate lancinante de um traficante local. A luta termina num edifício fortificado, cercado pelos bandidos, onde decorre uma cena crucial da história.

Foi muito divertido paginar e desenhar esta sequência, embora tenha tido de fazer escolhas em relação à desordem nas ruas, pois incluir todos os detalhes distópicos de Porto-Príncipe da vida real tornaria as vinhetas demasiado cheias, o que seria suficiente para prejudicar a experiência de leitura.
A página-dupla do camião contra as motos foi algo difícil de finalizar, por causa da ligeira distorção olho-de-peixe, da perspectiva distorcida e dos aspectos práticos do desenho, como o desfoque. Na verdade, algo irritante aconteceu enquanto desenhava com grafite colorida: a cera na grafite tende a desbotar quando exposta à luz e por acaso deixei a página da esquerda perto da janela durante uns dias antes de finalmente a entintar, por isso, quando dei por mim, o desenho tinha desaparecido quase todo!...

Cadáver Esquisito! – Review II / Crítica II

:“Cadáver Esquisito! is a monumental work that compiles the largest collective comics’ project ever undertaken in Portugal. [...] The work is based on the cadavre exquis system, where each author continues the narrative from the last panel left by the previous one, without a predefined plan. Due to the method, the story is a succession of unpredictable twists, exploring automatism and absurd humor. The strongest point is the collage of styles; each page or segment offers a distinct visual identity, reflecting the plurality of talents in [portuguese] comics of that decade.
The [book] compilation transforms an ephemeral digital project into a historical document of Portuguese collective creativity. Under the direction of Daniel Maia (author and publisher), the project manages to maintain a bizarre fluidity, despite the dozens of hands involved. It is not a conventional beginning-middle-end comic, but a visual and narrative experience that defies traditional logic.”
