The Boy in the Bot: Robot

This simple drawing is a background pin-up featured in 2024’s The Boy in the Bot vol1’s prologue, written by Tom Marvelli, that I drew and inked. It’s child protagonist Billy’s favorite robot toy and it was conceptualized by artist Rafael Oliveira, who drew most of the 1st book.

É o brinquedo robot favorito da criança protagonista, Billy, e foi conceptualizado pelo artista Rafael Loureiro, que desenhou a maioria do 1º livro.

Blast from the Past: Macho-Alfa

This one is barely a “Blast from the Past”, having just turned 20 years old. And I regret the reason behind this post…
In 2006, I met the creative team behind BRK, a serialized comic in the bimonthly BDjornal, released by Jorge Machado Dias’ Pedranocharco. Filipe Duarte Pina (writer) and Filipe Andrade (artist) were two newcomers with a lot of creative energy and while Filipe Andrade went on to have a comics career, Filipe Pina made his name in videogames, producing with his NerdMonkey company the first portuguese videogame created for PlayStation. I had talks with him to share what little knowledge I had on how to navigate publishers and over the years got to enjoy his moves as an author.
In the last couple of years his biggest effort was writting and coloring the tetralogy Macho Alfa, with artist Osvaldo Medina, published by A Seita. Unfortunately, this week Filipe Pina (1979-2025) left us, way too early, just ahead of seeing his saga completed with vol4.

Over the years, Pina and I discussed collaborating a few times. He first asked if I’d like to draw the sequel to BRK – which I thought would be a bad fit, given my art is too different from Filipe Andrade’s – and later he approached with another idea he had, titled Macho Alfa. I was going through a rough time and hadn’t the disposition to venture on a lenghty project, and Pina himself was still putting the concept together.
However, I drew this tryout at the time, to give it a swing, and I’m sharing it here in Pina’s memory.

Filipe Pina’s legacy has left a mark in the portuguese millennium comics and the community has lost one of it’s strongest voices. RIP my friend.

Em 2006, conheci a equipa criativa por detrás de BRK, uma banda desenhada serializada no jornal bimestral BDjornal, lançada pela Pedranocharco, de Jorge Machado Dias. Filipe Duarte Pina (argumentista) e Filipe Andrade (artista) eram dois estreantes com muita energia criativa e, enquanto Filipe Andrade seguiu uma carreira nos comics, Filipe Pina destacou-se nos videojogos, produzindo com a sua empresa NerdMonkey o primeiro videojogo português criado para a PlayStation. Falei com ele para partilhar o pouco conhecimento que tinha sobre como navegar as editoras e, ao longo dos anos, pude apreciar os seus esforços como autor.
Nos últimos dois anos, o seu maior trabalho foi escrever e colorir a tetralogia Macho Alfa, com o artista Osvaldo Medina, publicada pela editora A Seita. Infelizmente, esta semana, Filipe Pina (1979-2025) deixou-nos, demasiado cedo, pouco antes de ver a sua saga completa com o vol4.
Ao longo dos anos, Pina e eu falámos sobre colaborar algumas vezes. Primeiro, perguntou-me se gostaria de desenhar a sequela de BRK – o que achei ser má ideia, uma vez que a minha arte difere muito da de Filipe Andrade – e depois abordou-me com outra ideia que teve, titulada Macho Alfa. Eu estava a passar por um momento difícil e não tinha capacidade de me aventurar num projeto longo, e o próprio Pina ainda estava a elaborar o conceito.
No entanto, desenhei este teste na altura, só para ver como saía, e partilho-o aqui em memória do Pina.

O legado de Filipe Pina deixou uma marca na banda desenhada do milénio portuguesa e a comunidade perdeu uma das suas vozes mais fortes. Descansa em paz, meu amigo.

Another Door Comics: Apparition Metempsychosis – Sampler / Amostra

As announced last week, Another Door Comics is offering a 12-page preview of the publisher’s first spin-off, Apparition: Metempsychosis Book One - The Moment of Sin, that I'm drawing, as a stretch goal for the campaign for The Boy in the Bot vol2. The campaign ends on July 24th!
Apparition: Metempsychosis is a darker, more adult addition to the World of The Boy in the Bot, written by Tom Marvelli, with art by me (Daniel Maia) and colors by Ren Spiller. This is a digital exclusive that will give campaign backers the opportunity to be the first to read the beginning of the book. The preview includes the first 12 pages of Chapter One, bonus content and an exclusive cover!

20º FIBDB – Exposição Cadáver Esquisito! / Weird Corpse! exhibit

The 20th FIBDB recently ended, and with it the collective exhibit Cadáver Esquisito!/Weird Corpse!, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of the projects’ conclusion, which, for 22 years, remains as the largest Portuguese collective comic book of all time. The presentation of the webcomic compilation in book format, which will be available in July, also served as an excuse to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the creation of the cadavre exquis method, conceived in France by the Surrealist Movement in 1925.

In this exhibition, since it was impossible to display all of the +50 pages that make up the initiative, we selected the 20 pages created by the most renown authors in the Portuguese community; namely André Caetano, Carla Rodrigues, Daniel Henriques, Daniel Maia, Diogo Carvalho, Fernando ‘Phermad’ Madeira, Filipe ‘Fil’ Lopes, Hugo Teixeira, João Mendonça, Luís Guerreiro, Maria João Careto, Miguel Mendonça, Nuno Lourenço Rodrigues, Nuno Sarabando, Pedro N., Silvestre ‘Véte’ Francisco, Sónia Oliveira, Susana Resende, Xico Santos and Zé Burnay, plus the writers Diogo Campos and Hugo Jesus.

O 20º FIBDB terminou recentemente e com ele a mostra colectiva Cadáver Esquisito!, que celebrou o 10º aniversário da conclusão do projecto, que ainda há, desde há 22 anos, a maior banda desenhada colectiva portuguesa de sempre. A apresentação da compilação do webcomic em livro, que fica disponível em Julho, serviu também como pretexto para celebrar o centésimo aniversário da criação do método cadavre exquis, idealizado em França pelo Movimento Surrealista, em 1925.

Nesta exposição, sendo impossível expor todas as +50 pranchas que compõem a iniciativa, foram selecionadas as 20 páginas assinadas pelos autores com maior reconhecido no sector português; nomeadamente André Caetano, Carla Rodrigues, Daniel Henriques, Daniel Maia, Diogo Carvalho, Fernando ‘Phermad’ Madeira, Filipe ‘Fil’ Lopes, Hugo Teixeira, João Mendonça, Luís Guerreiro, Maria João Careto, Miguel Mendonça, Nuno Lourenço Rodrigues, Nuno Sarabando, Pedro N., Silvestre ‘Véte’ Francisco, Sónia Oliveira, Susana Resende, Xico Santos e Zé Burnay, mais os escritores Diogo Campos e Hugo Jesus.

Sketch 94 / Esboço 94 – MaiaBD

A month after CoimbraBD, I attended the 3rd MaiaBD comics festival, for the first time. I hadn’t been in Porto in professional circunstances for about ten years.
MaiaBD was a blast and I got to sign my CoBrA graphic novel there for the first time, along with writer Marco Calhorda, plus pitch in promoting his sequel. I also got to autograph other books and sell several artworks. Thanks, to all the readers and collectors that help make a great event!

Um mês depois do CoimbraBD, fui pela primeira vez ao 3º festival MaiaBD. Não ia ao Porto em circunstâncias profissionais há cerca de dez anos.
O MaiaBD foi incrível e pude assinar a minha banda desenhada do CoBrA lá pela primeira vez, juntamente com o escritor Marco Calhorda, além de contribuir para a promoção da sequela. Pude também autografar outros livros e vender várias artes originais. Obrigado, aos leitores e colecionadores que ajudaram a fazer este evento fantástico!

Sketch 93 / Esboço 93 – CoimbraBD

This year, more than ever before, I made the rounds at Portugal’s comics festivals, begining with the 6th CoimbraBD, followed by the 3rd MaiaBD and 20th FIBDB. I attended three events in three months, going from up north in the country, to the center and south; plus, I also had a quick visit to the 95th Lisbon Book Fair.

At CoimbraBD, I was available for book signings and artwork sales, having gone there to present the new american work. My thanks, again, to readers that came by to chat a bit, and also my apreciation to the promoters, for putting together such an awesome event and for catering to all our (artists) needs.

Este ano, mais do que nunca, participei nos festivais de banda desenhada em Portugal, começando pelo 6º CoimbraBD, seguindo-se o 3º MaiaBD e 20º FIBDB. Estive em três eventos em três meses, desde o norte do país, passando pelo centro e sul; além disso, fiz visita rápida à 95ª Feira do Livro de Lisboa.
No CoimbraBD, estive disponível para sessões de autógrafos e vendas de obras de arte, tendo lá ido para apresentar o novo trabalho americano. Mais uma vez, agradeço aos leitores que vieram conversar um pouco, e também aos promotores, por organizarem um evento tão incrível e por atenderem a todas as nossas (artistas) necessidades.

Splaft! #20 [Bedeteca de Beja]

As part of the 20th Beja International Comics Festival’s program, the Beja Comics Library keeps its annual rhythm of publications related to the event, namely the FIBDB Program, the catalog Splaft!, plus the anthological fanzine Venham +5 and the Toupeira Collection comic book, this time titled Fernando Pessoa: 4 Poemas, by José Lopes, also awarded with the 2025’ Geraldes Lino Prize.

In Splaft!, several investigators, journalists, critics and store managers are invited to write on the exhibitions on display at the festival, which this year takes on the special importance of marking the 20th anniversary of FIBDB. The event brought together 60 talents from Germany, Angola, Brazil, Chile, France, England, Iran, Italy, Palestine and Portugal, distributed in eighteen collective and individual exhibitions, with professional and amateur works.

My contribution was to write about my own collective exhibition, Cadáver Exquisito!/Weird Corpse, an exhibition that displayed twenty pages from the project with +50 artboards, in this case created by the most recognized authors, and which this year celebrates the 10th anniversary of its completion. At the same time, the exhibition also commemorates 125 years since the invention of the Cadavre Exquis method by the Surrealist Movement.

Integrado no programa do 20º Festival Internacional BD de Beja, a Bedeteca de Beja mantém o seu ritmo anual de publicações alusivas ao evento, nomeadamente o Programa do FIBDB, o catálogo Splaft! - Caderno da Bedeteca, mais o fanzine antológico Venham +5 e o comic da Colecção Toupeira, desta vez intitulado Fernando Pessoa: 4 Poemas, assinado por José Lopes, também premiado com o Prémio Geraldes Lino 2025.

Em Splaft!, vários investigadores, jornalistas, críticos e lojistas são convidados a escrever sobre as mostras patentes no festival, que este ano assume o especial relevo de marcar o 20º aniversário do FIBDB. O evento integrou 60 talentos vindos da Alemanha, Angola, Brasil, Chile, França, Inglaterra, Irão, Itália, Palestina e Portugal, distribuídos em dezoito exposições, colectivas e individuais, com obras profissionais e amadoras.

O meu contributo foi escrever sobre a exposição colectiva, Cadáver Esquisito!, uma mostra que expõe vinte pranchas do projecto com +50 páginas, neste caso criadas pelos autores de maior reconhecimento do público, e que este ano celebra o 10º aniversário da sua conclusão. Simultaneamente, a exposição comemora também 125 anos da invenção do método Cadavre Exquis, pelo Movimento Surrealista.

95th Lisbon Book Fair / 95ª Feira do Livro de Lisboa

The 95th Lisbon Book Fair is taking place at Parque Eduardo VII until June 22nd and I was again attending the event, for the 4th time, at the stand of Ala dos Livros. This year, I was invited to participate in the presentation of another publisher's book, but it was impossible to partake for professional reasons, and I was only available for book signings on one day. In any case, I would like to thank the readers who visited me.

A 95ª Feira do Livro de Lisboa está a decorrer no Parque Eduardo VII até dia 22 de Junho e eu voltei a marcar presença no certame, pela 4a vez, no stand da Ala dos Livros.
Este ano, fui convidado a participar na apresentação do livro doutra editora, mas foi impossível colaborar por motivos profissionais, assim como só pude estar disponível para autógrafos apenas um dia. Em todo o caso, o meu agradecimento aos leitores que visitaram.

20º FIBDB – Photo / Fotos

O 20º Festival Internacional BD de Beja foi inaugurado no passado fim do mês e decorre até 15 de Junho. Com dezoito exposições, entre mostras individuais e colectivas, passam pelo FIBDB cerca de meia centena de artistas, entre os quais talentos de topo do panorama internacional. Além das apresentações, conversas, prémios, autógrafos e concertos desenhados, há também o Mercado do Livro, que disponibiliza a maior feira de livros de banda desenhada a sul durante o período do evento.

Entre as exposições, está patente a colectiva ‘Cadáver Esquisito!’, que expõe ao público uma breve selecção de vinte pranchas pelos autores mais reconhecidos dos leitores, que participaram na iniciativa de webcomic epónima, que coordenei entre 2007-2015, e que ainda é a maior BD colectiva jamais realizada no país.
Em Cadáver Esquisito! os autores foram desafiados a criar uma página sequencial em modo cadavre exquis, que os levou a testar a espontaneidade narrativa e criar uma sequência assente no mote da página precedente – um trabalho cooperativo de 56 autores, profissionais e amadores, que juntos construiram uma BD de 58 páginas.
A edição compilada do projecto vai estar disponível em breve e pela primeira vez. Mas ainda pode consultar a iniciativa no blogue original.

The 20th Beja International Comics Festival opened last month and will run until June 15. With eighteen exhibitions, including individual and collectives, around fifty artists will be exhibiting at FIBDB, including top talents from the international scene. In addition to presentations, chats, awards, autographs and drawing shows, there is also the Book Market, which offers the largest comic book fair in the south during the event.

Among the exhibitions, the collective exhibit ‘Cadáver Esquisito!’/’Weird Corpse!’ is on display, which presents a brief selection of twenty pages by the most renown authors among readers, who participated in the eponymous webcomic initiative, which I coordinated between 2007-2015 and which is still the largest collective comic book ever created in the country.
InCadáver Esquisito! the authors were challenged to create a sequential page in cadavre exquis mode, which led them to test narrative spontaneity and create a sequence based on the previous page – a cooperative effort by 56 authors, professionals and amateurs, who together created a 58-page comic book.
