Sixty
years ago today, “Operation Vijay” launched the might of the
Indian armed forces against a small contingent of soldiers in the
Portuguese peninsula of Goa. A colony of Portugal for nearly 500
years, the invasion took the ill equipped Portuguese military by
surprise, taking advantage of a move that had recently led the
majority of its soldiers to Angola, and began the conflict in
Angediva Island on December 18, 1961. Taking place over 72 hours, the
combat resulted in 20 Indian casualties and 30 portuguese dead, plus
roughly 4700 war prisoners, which were held in captivity for five
months and used as pawns in the international arena by their own
dictatorship government...
In
early 2022, Co.Br.A. - Operação Goa, by Ala dos
Livros, written by Marco Calhorda and drawn by me, will show the
efforts that faced India’s rule and challenged Portugal’s
mandates, in order to bring the Portuguese soldiers back home.
