Fiz cinco protecções – nas ombreiras, pulsos e fivela – como ref.ª às quinas do brasão na bandeira, e além dos habituais verde e vermelho, tentei que no tronco/coxas o fato evocasse as túnicas dos cavaleiros medievais. Para símbolo, recorri à Lis, que substitui o brasão no peito. Enfim, uma concepção foi mais orientada para o “Portugal” do que para “Infante.”

Continuing with the sketches for “Infante Portugal e a Íntima Capitulação”, by José de Matos-Cruz, today I showcase the studies for the hero’s revamp, who was initicially created by (veteran) artist José Garcês. The previous versions were a lot more humorous, which is keeping with the work’s parody tone, but I went for something more sofisticate and evocative.

I used several references to the shield in the flag and, along with the traditional red & green, tried to have the torso/hips mirror the vests of medieval knights. As for symbol, I replaced the shield in his chest with a “Lis”, the portuguese cross seen in the sails of the Discovery era caravells.
