Cadavre Exquis returns | Regresso do Cadavre Exquis

Years ago, I began an initiative to help jolt the community, with a purpose of showcasing artists (as with other projects I published) and give rising talents an entry point in the field, as others had done for me when I started out. But due to several issues it didn’t wrap-up as I would like. This initiative is a Cadavre Exquis, titled Weird Corpse!, which I’m now, finally, bringing to a close.

First, what’s a Cadavre Exquis (i.e. Exquisite Corpse)? Although it’s a bit complex, it’s usually a collaborative creative effort linking an author’s work to another’s and so on, creating a whole based on all interventions. For this collective comic, I challenged them to contribute with a single page that would add to the story being developed or retcon it. It’s been a lot of fun and creatively rewarding, but also taxing to coordinate.

Unfortunately, once my life took a turn and I became less available, it got harder to single-handedly regulate incoming pages. With a hiatus here and there, C.E. came to full stop in late 2010 due to contributors that kept delaying their works (and never delivered). With the nagging feeling of something left unfinished, I kept attempting to relaunch it with new blood, until I decided to make an exception and kick-start it anew by doing the new page myself, from which the next ones could spawn.

Now, wrapping-up in page #50, the C.E. will tally at 55 participating artists, excluding myself, twenty of which having been absolute newcomers. The brief batch of new pages will start with my #47, to which these WiPs belong to. Follow what’s left of C.E. at its official blog.

Anos atrás, comecei uma iniciativa para energizar a comunidade, com o objectivo de destacar artistas (como noutros projectos que editei) e dar a novos talentos um ponto de entrada no sector. Mas devido a várias contingências, nem tudo correu como pretendi. A iniciativa em causa é a CC:Cadavre Exquis, intitulada Cadáver Esquisito!, que irei agora – por fim – concluir.

Mas, o que é um Cadavre Exquis (i.e. Cadáver Excelente)? Emboja seja complexo, usualmente trata-se de colaboração criativa onde se associa o trabalho dum autor a outro, e por aí adiante, criando um todo baseado neste encadeamento. Nesta BD colectiva, cada artista foi desafiado a contribuir uma página de BD auto-conclusiva com aspectos para o plot em desenvolvimento ou revisá-lo. Tem sido divertido e recompensador a nível criativo, mas também exaustivo de coordenar.

Infelizmente, quando a minha vida pessoal deu uma volta e fiquei menos disponível, tornou-se difícil de regular sozinho as novas pranchas. Com pausas aqui e ali, o C.E. parou por completo em final de 2010 devido a colaboradores que atrasaram repetidamente as BDs (e nunca as entregaram). Frustrado pelo projecto ficar incompleto, tentei várias vezes relança-lo com sangue novo, até que por fim decidi simplesmente abrir uma excepção e dar eu mesmo o pontapé-de-partida, fazendo a nova página a partir da qual surgissem as próximas. Agora, encerrando na #50, o C.E. soma 55 autores, excluindo-me a mim, sendo 20 deles novatos absolutos.
