Sketch 29 - Recreating the Hero | Esboço 29 - O Infante Portugal vol.3: Recriando o Herói

Começo a tour aos trabalhos do último livro do O Infante Portugal abordando a criação das figuras. A saga, saída da mente fértil do José de Matos-Cruz, está repleta de apaixonantes personagens, que tanto exultam as mitologias dos super-heróis como são inspiradas na imagética e cultura portuguesas, e forma concebidas visualmente por alguns dos criativos ilustradores nacionais. O universo criativo (como é usual dizer) é tão variado e dinâmico que suportaria facilmente uma longa série de BDs e livros…!

Starting off the tour of the works for the Infante Portugal‘s final book, I’m focusing on characters concepts. The saga, from the prolific mind of José de Matos-Cruz, is teeming with fascinating characters, which both rejoice on superhero mythologies and are inspired by the Portuguese imagery and culture, and were visually created by some of the inventive Portuguese illustrators. This fictional universe (as we usually say) is so varied and dynamic that it would easily support a long line of comics and books…!

  

Nesta jornada final, coube-me criar novos personagens, uma tarefa dividida com a Susana Resende. Para começar, falo da recriação do fato do herói titular, que não é bem “recriação”, mas antes uma afinação. Como detentor de poderes mágicos, mas de pouca acção bélica usual, quis suavizar o fato que fiz em 2010 no vol.2, passando de uma semi-armadura (de referência a Cruzados) para algo mais alusivo a túnica (de Mago).

In this last journey, I was trusted to come up with new characters, a task I shared with Susana Resende. For starters, I’ll discuss refitting the title hero’s suit, which isn’t really a “recreation” but more of a fine-tuning. As a wielder of magical powers, but prone to rare battling action, I tried to soften up the costume done for 2010’s 2nd vol., going from a semi-armor (with reference to Crusaders) to something more akin to a (Mage) tunic.

Depois de brincar com variações, deixei de tentar incorporar a Lis no fato e tornei-a “o” fato, tendo o cuidado de não o afastar demasiado da versão anterior; o resultado ainda não me satisfaz, mas gostei do aspecto regale obtido.

After playing around with variations, I stopped trying to fit the Portuguese “Lis” into the costume and made “it” the suit, with caution to not steer it to far from the previous version; the end result didn’t really grab me, but I enjoyed its regal look.
