Mais um punhado de esboços de aquecimento e relaxamento. Uns feitos com lapiseira e outros directamente com caneta.

Another batch of warm up sketches and relaxation doodles. Some were done with mechanical pencil, others directly with ball-point pen.

Comic Lx XL

Esta já é velhinha. Inspirada num conto do escritor italiano Italo Calvino, tirado do seu clássico As Cidades Invisíveis (1972), fiz esta BD curta para a revista JuveBêDê #32 e posteriormente refinei-a para a antologia de BD da Bedeteca de Beja, Venham +5 vol.5 (2007); até hoje, no que respeita a BD, este volume é um marco no sector e o maior jamais editado no país, reunindo vários talentos nacionais, profissionais e amadores, assim como diversos autores estrangeiros, ao longo das suas 225 páginas. Além doutros prémios, venceu o Troféu Central Comics: Heróis da Década, como Melhor Publicação Independente (2001-2012)!

Na altura em que o fiz, estava distante da BD, após um par de tentativas goradas no mercado norte-americano, motivo porque mantive o desenho simples e piscando o olho aos fumettis italianos, embora propositadamente influenciado no trabalho de Mike Mignola também. Ainda me agrada o conceito do guião, apesar de que podia ter forçado mais o ângulo fantástico…

This one is an oldie. Inspired in a tale by Italian writer Italo Calvino, from his classic book The InvisibleCities (1972), I did this short story for a Portuguese comics magazine (JuveBêDê #32) and afterwards improved it for a comics anthology by Beja’s Comics Library, titled Venham +5 vol.5 (2007); to this day, concerning comics, this book is the biggest ever published in the country, collecting several professional and rookie national talents, plus many foreign authors as well, amongst its 225 pages. Along with many other prizes, it even won a Central Comics Award for Best Independent Publication of the Decade(2001-2012)!

At the time I drew this, I had been away from comics, after a couple of misfires at the U.S. market, which is probably why I kept the line-art simple and winking at italian fumettis, albeit purposefully influenced on Mike Mignola’s artwork as well. I still like the concept of the story, but feel I could’ve pushed its fantasy angle further...

Note: The abbreviation "Lx" stands for Lisbon (Portugal), where the story means to take place.

Layout Zonas Ténues

Este layout (vide, esboço de sequência) nasceu de um projecto maior norte-americano, para o qual fui convidado em 2006, mas que acabou por não avançar. Tendo ficado com a pesquisa em mãos e com o “bichinho”, decidi tecer uma BD curta, mas só como argumentista e autor de esboços, tendo o trabalho final sido produzido via manipulação fotográfica – uma foto-BD – seguindo de perto estes estudos. A publicação foi cedida ao BDjornal #21, em Dezembro de 2006; amostra AQUI.

This layout came out of a larger U.S. comics project, for which I was invited back in 2006, but which didn’t get off the ground. Having done the research and with the “bug” still hitching, I decided to weave a short comic out of it, but only as writer and on layouts, with final work produced through photo manipulation - a Photo-Comic, if you will – closely following these sketches. Its publication was given to Portuguese comics magazine BDjornal #21, released in December 2006; see a sample HERE.

O Infante Portugal em Universos Reunidos: Videos de Exposições | Exhibits Videos

Em jeito de extra, complementando o post com fotos da expo e após fazer rescaldo com alguns desenhos e dedicatórias deixadas no livro de visitas, encerro o capítulo desta retrospectiva à trilogia de José de Matos-Cruz partilhando dois videos da mostra (gravados por Jorge Macieira, retirados do Youtube; Um obrigado ao sr.Jorge).
A iluminação das salas deixou a desejar, mas em parte foi precisa para não ofuscar a projecção dos trailers na tela widescreen.

To wrap it up and complement the previous posts, with the exhibits’ photos and aftermath with display of drawings and dedications left in the show’sguestbook, I’m closing the chapter on José de Matos-Cruz’s trilogy retrospective by sharing two videos of said exhibit (recorded by Jorge Macieira, taken from Youtube). The lighting at both rooms left something to be desired, but it was somewhat needed as to not overshadow the trailers’ projection in the widescreen LCD.

Correio da Manhã: Ilustrações | Illustrations

Concluindo o post de ontem, partilho ilustrações editoriais feitas para a secção Crime do jornal nacional Correio da Manhã, há alguns anos. Confesso que o aspecto do desafio foi estimulante, recebendo-se o ‘briefing no final da tarde e tendo cerca de 3-4h para enviar o trabalho final, mas as realidades cruas e macabras que se é chamado a ilustrar …mexem com o “sistema” de qualquer pessoa sã.

Alterei um pouco a finalização, para que o traço não fosse comprometido pelo formato e porosidade do papel de jornal, e não me aventurei muito com os tons, que gradualmente testei, indo do liso ao mais modelado.

Completing yesterday’s post, here are the editorial illustrations made ​​for national newspaper Correio da Manhã’s (aka Morning Courier) Crime section, from a few years back. I confess the challenging aspect of it was exciting, getting the briefing in the evening and having about 3-4h to send in the final work, but the raw and macabre realities that one’s called in to illustrate ...can mess with any sane person’s psyche.

I changed the finishing of it a bit, so that the inking wasn't compromised by the print size and paper porosity, and also didn't venture too much on tonings, which I gradually tested from flat tone to a bit more modelation.

Sei que são tétricos demais, mesmo para a época Halloweenesca, mas eis esboços para ilustrações editoriais feitas há alguns anos na secção Crime do jornal Correio da Manhã, onde substituí por um mês o ilustrador regular, Ricardo Cabral. Infelizmente, foi difícil seguir a linha ténue entre o tacto e o graficamente explícito…

Although I realize they’re too tetric, even for the Halloween season, here’s sketches for editorial ilustrations done a few years ago on the Crime section of Correio da Manhã newspaper, were, for a month, I replaced its regular illustrator, Ricardo Cabral. Regretfully, it was hard to follow the thin line between what’s tactful and graphically explicit…

O Infante Portugal: Livro Livre | The infante Portugal: Unbound Book

Volvido um ano da retrospectiva à saga d’O Infante Portugal no 23º festival Amadora BD, partilho um dos adereços da mostra: o Livro Livre, um volume milenar que traça a cronologia dos paladinos, que fez de livro de visitas. Entre as centenas de páginas, dezenas de desenhos e dedicatórias (desde já, obrigado a quem lá escreveu) escolhi algumas das mais alusivas ao universo criativo de José de Matos-Cruz…

A year after The Infante Portugal saga’s retrospective at the 23rd Festival Amadora BD, here’s one of the props of said exhibit: the Unbound Book, a volume that traces the paladins’ ancient chronology, and was also the show’s guestbook. Amongst its hundreds of pages, dozens of drawings and acknowledgments (thanks to all who wrote there) I picked out a few drawings that most alluded to José de Matos-Cruz’s creative universe...
