…And now, the popular Batman, a drawing from circa 2000, here in full blaze of my artistic influences by Kevin Nowlan and Jae Lee, amongst others.

Ron Perlman, HellBoy

Boas! ‘De volta. As últimas semanas com prazos apertados afastaram-me, mas recupero a última tendência e partilho duas imagens antigas com as personagens aqui recentemente ‘postadas.

A primeira, do HellBoy, vem de 2000, altura que o mundo soube qual actor iria encarnar o herói vermelho no cinema – Ron Perlman. Tentei simular como ele surgiria caracterizado, mas acabei por apontar muito por baixo, já que os prostéticos – não fosse ele o protagonista na série Bela & Monstro – abundariam… No entanto, foi um “exercício” engraçado.

 

Hey! Back again. The last deadline intense weeks through me off, but I’m retrieving the latest trend and sharing two old images with the characters recently 'posted here.

The first, of Hellboy, comes from 2000, when the world learned what actor would embody the red hero in the movies – Ron Perlman. I tried to simulate how he would appear, but missed by a few dozen prosthetics – which I should have expected, given he was the protagonist in the series Beauty & the Beast... However, it was a funny "exercise".

Alguns esboços e desenhos preliminares do Batman vs Joker. A maioria das fases são do 1º dia, como desenho de aquecimento, e só no 2º terminei a imagem (da parte inferior do Batman aos fundos).

Usualmente dou-me mal porque, por sentimento de culpa, re-uso folhas para rabiscos, mas se acabo por fazer algo de válido nelas, depois confronto-me com o facto do seu verso ser pouco condigno se eventualmente quiser oferecer/vender o desenho ou ceder para expo… É o preço de ser ecológico;]

Some sketches and preliminary drawings of Batman vsJoker. Most stages are from the 1st day, as a warm up drawing, and in the 2nd day I finished it (from the bottom of Batman to backgrounds).

I usually fail because, out of guilty conscience, I re-use sheets to scribble on, but if I end up doing something valid on them I then get confronted with the fact that its verse isn’t adequate if I eventually want to offer/sell the drawing or make it available for exhibits... It's the price of being ‘green;]

Batman vs. Joker

Uma nova ilustração do Cavaleiro das Trevas, agora no encalço do Joker. Fi-lo menos elaborado que o desenho recente do HellBoy, mas como sendo um “desenho de aquecimento,” feito em dois dias. Espero que gostem, não obstante…;]

A new illustration of The Dark Knight, now in pursuit of the Joker. I made it less elaborated than the recent HellBoy drawing, but still faced as a "warm up drawing", done over two days. I hope you enjoy nevertheless ...;]

Aqui está a ilustração finalizada. Sendo impossível retratar o HellBoy tal como faz o criador, MikeMignola, optei por descartar as feições do actor Ron Perlman e fazer uma interpretação minha.

Here is the finished illustration. Impossible as it is to portray HellBoy like his creator, Mike Mignola, does, I chose to discard actor Ron Perlman’s look and do an interpretation of my own.

Work-in-progress photos of my HellBoy drawing, as created by Mike Mignola, one of my favorite characters. The illustration was done over a day (including stops), trying to have it loose and quick, but it eventually resulted in a piece with too much detail...

"Working class heroes"

Hoje faço post sobre os colegas mais próximos e as suas novidades: Para começar, a parceira de estúdio Susana Resende tem nova galeria de originais para venda, no portal OLX; são duas séries de trabalhos em aguarelas e aguadas, que vão anteceder outra colecção de pinturas paisagistas, em técnica mista, disponível em breve.

Destaco ainda que a Susana concluiu recentemente – após ANOS de insistência minha! – a sua primeira BD curta, para editar na antologia Zona Nippon vol.2, assim precedendo uma intervenção mais extensa na transição para BD de O Infante Portugal. "Bem-vinda à selva!"

Estou igualmente radiante pelo amigo e colega Daniel Henriques, que no final de 2009 fisguei de volta para o munda da BD, via um desafio no projecto Cadavre Exquis, e que entretanto tem feito progressos galopantes como arte-finalista (inker), associado ao Crime Lab Syndicate, de Danny Miki. Têm sido várias as assistências artísticas que o Daniel fez para ganhar experiência na indústria (quis salientá-las na altura, mas a seu pedido sustive-me…), mas eis que as notas de agradecimento repetem-se (em 2012, no Fear Itself #12, e agora no Uncanny X-Force #2) e está para breve ir começar a dedicar-se ao 'inking a tempo inteiro. Kudos!

Today I post about my closest colleagues and their respective news: First, my studio partner Susana Resende has a new gallery at OLX portal, with originals for sale. There's two series of watercolors and washes works, which will round off another collection of landscape paintings in mixed techniques, available soon. I also highlight that Susana recently concluded her first comic short-story – after YEARS of insisting with her! –, to publish in the Zona Nippon vol.2 anthology, that precedes a more extensive intervention in adapting into comic-book The Infante Portugal . "Welcome to the jungle!"

I’m also overjoyed with friend and colleague Daniel Henriques, who I snagged back to the comics world in late 2009, through a challenge for my Cadavre Exquis project, and in the meantime has made a huge progress as inker, associated with Danny Miki’s Crime Lab Syndicate. Daniel has done several works in inks assistance in order to gain experience (I wanted to mention them at the time, but held off at his request ...), but now the acknowledgment credits keep repeating (in 2012, on Fear Itself # 12, and now, in Uncanny X-Force #2) and he’ll soon engage 'inking in a full time basis. Kudos!
