Semi-Novo & Semi-Deus

Estas são duas artes-finais que fiz há 1 ano atrás, a partir do diário gráfico da artista Susana Resende. Neste caso, eram estudos soltos, pelo que tive alguma margem para interpretação; no 2º desenho (ainda com linhas a lápis), segui menos o traço dela e tentei criar um personagem.

These two inkings were done a year ago, from live drawings by artist Susana Resende. In this case, the drawings were loose studies, so I had some room for interpretation; in the 2nd drawing (still with its pencil lines), I followed her style less and tried to make up a character.

Novo Venom

Ainda fresca, esta ilustração do novo Venom da Marvel foi uma comissão para o amigo Daniel Henriques, que além de ter assinado o póster oficial do VIII Troféus Central Comics, se tem aplicado em desenvolver arte-final para comics. Talvez em breve possa mostrar aqui uma versão ‘inkada disto…?

Still fresh, this illustration of Marvel Comics’ New Venom was a commission done for my friend Daniel Henriques, whom aside having created the official poster for the VIII Troféus Central Comics, has also began to develop inking for comics. Maybe I can post here an inked version of this sometime soon…?

VII Festival Internacional de BD de Beja

Apesar da crise, abriu portas o VII Festival Internacional BD de Beja (FIBDB). Já é sabido que este evento da planície é das melhores referências em festivais de BD ibérica, pela sobriedade e excelência de execução, e eclectismo entre o comercial e independente com que pauta as expos e convida autores. Entre 28 Maio e 12 Junho, os locais costumeiros – a Casa da Cultura de Beja (sede da Bedeteca de Beja), Biblioteca Municipal José Saramago, Museu Jorge Vieira, Galeria do Desassossego, Museu Regional e Teatro Municipal Pax Julia – acolhem as mostras e programação frisadas no site oficial.

Embora tenha visitado o festival num fim-de-semana desastroso, com uma chuvada brutal que até teve direito a granizo, o clima de descontracção e oportunidade para tertuliar com amigos não enegreceu minimamente a experiência – antes pelo contrário. Para a memória fica o team-work urgente em que eu, o Tiago (Mongorhead Comics), o Silvestre (aka Véte BD) e o Paulo (Director do FIBDB) nos armámos de vassouras para aliviar uma pesada bolsa de água que se acumulava num recanto do toldo da zona comercial;)

Resta salientar o bom: o já mencionado fantástico trabalho e cuidados nas expo; e mau: o facto de este ano não ter havido propostas de trabalho para edição na Colecção Toupeira…

Aproveito para divulgar que as edições Arga Warga estão disponíveis no mercado do festival.

In spite of the economic crisis, Beja’s VII International Comics Festival has opened its doors. It’s well known that this event of the plains is amongst the best reference in iberic comics’ festivals, for its sobriety & excellence in execution, and for the mainstream and independent eccletism with which it mounts the exhibits and invites authors. From 28 May to 12 June, the galleries and spots will hold the show’s various displays and program, which are shown in the official website.

Although I choose a disastrous weekend to visit it, due to a brutal thunder storm that also rained hail, the atmosphere of relax and chance to gather with friends didn’t dim the experience in the slightest – quite the opposite. Faded to memory is the urgent team-work in which I, along with Tiago (of Mongorhead Comics), Silvestre (aka Véte BD) and Paulo (director of the festival) armed ourselves with brooms in order to relieve a heavy pocket of water that was forming in a corner of the tent of the commercial area;)

The good: the already mentioned amazing work and carefulness in the exhibits, plus distribution of spaces; the bad: the fact that this year no one present work to publish in the comic of Toupeira Collection…

All-Girlz vence nos VIII Troféus Central Comics!

Tem sido até aqui um feliz hábito os comics All-Girlz terem reconhecimento por parte dos prémios de BD nacionais – significa que fizemos algo bem! Após nomeações para Melhor Fanzine conferidas ao All-Girlzine, em 2006, nos Prémios Nacionais de BD (PNBD), e no ano seguinte, nos V Troféus Central Comics (TCC), estas repetem-se mais tarde nos PNBDs do 20º e 21º Amadora BD, destacando então as novas antológicas da iniciativa, Galore e Banzai!

Na sequência dessas, os comics All-Girlz Galore e All-Girlz Banzai!, sob o título genérico da colecção, foram ainda distinguidos como candidatos no VIII Troféus Central Comics/2010. Como editor deste projecto independente, é com prazer que divulgo o público ter atribuído ao All-Girlz os dois prémios em que estava nomeado, nomeadamente Melhor Fanzine e Melhor Obra Curta, sendo este último relativo à BD “Dream Machine 2.1”, de Joana Lafuente (in Banzai!). Saliento ainda a nomeação também nesta categoria de “Annushka, a Boneca”, de Andreia Rechena (in Galore). Desde já o meu obrigado e parabéns a todas as autoras envolvidas e demais colaboradores!

A cerimónia de entrega dos vencedores teve lugar em 3 de Abril no acorrido evento Anigamix 2011, na Exponor. Os TCC são os únicos prémios portugueses (e europeus?) para Banda Desenhada onde os vencedores são decididos pelos votos e preferências dos leitores, sendo promovidos de modo privado pelo portal CentralComics.com.

Thus far, it’s been a fortunate habit that my All-Girlz comics get some recognition from the Portuguese comics’ awards – means we’re doing something right! After nominations for Best Fanzine bestowed on All-Girlzine, in 2006, at the National Comics Awards (PNBD), and in the following year, at the V Central Comics Awards (TCC), these were repeated next at the 20th and 21st Amadora BD Comic-Con’s PNBD, spotlighting the new anthology titles from the initiative, ‘Galore and Banzai!

Following those, the All-Girlz Galore and All-Girlz Banzai! comics have, under generic banner, have also been distinguished as candidates at the VIII Central Comics Awards/2010. As the projects' publisher, it’s my pleasure to announce that the public has awarded us both throphies for which All-Girlz was nominated, namely Best Fanzine and Best Short Work, this last one related to Joana Lafuente’s short comic, titled “Dream Machine 2.1” (in Banzai!). Also worthy of note is the nomination in the same category of “Annushka, a Boneca”, by Andreia Rechena (in Galore). ‘My huge thanks and congratulations to every artist and collaborators involved!

The award ceremony took place April 3rd, in the successful Anigamix 2011 event, at Exponor exhibit pavilion, in Oporto. The TCC are the only Portuguese (and European?) awards were the winners are determined by the votes and preferences of the actual readers, being privately promoted by CentralComics.com portal.

All-Girlz nomeadas para Prémios de BD

Os Prémios Nacionais de Banda Desenhada (PNBD), nome actualmente dado aos “Troféus Zé Pacóvio e Grilinho”, são os mais afamados da BD portuguesa, atribuídos pelos profissionais do sector e associados do CNBDI (Central Nacional de BD e Imagem), da C. M. da Amadora, durante o festival promovido por este organismo – o Amadora BD.

É com prazer que anúncio que, pela terceira vez, um comic All-Girlz foi nomeado na categoria Melhor Fanzine, sendo os resultados divulgados este Sábado, a partir das 18h30, nos Recreios da Amadora.

O All-Girlz Banzai!, o título em causa, foi editado em Novembro transacto e dedicado exclusivamente ao mangá lusitano, escolhendo as autoras Joana Lafuente e Selma Pimentel como suas embaixadoras, duas jovens artistas que representam o melhor que a arte sequencial oriental tem para oferecer, no nosso país.
Quer à 3ª vez, seja de vez, quer não, remeto desde já uma nota de agradecimento ao júri do evento, pois entendo que a honra conferida ao trabalho das autoras e à edição em si, mediante esta nomeação, é já reconhecimento suficiente;)


The PNBD (or Comic Books National Awards) are the portuguese comics market’ most famed trophies, determined according to the votes of fellow professionals and other associates of Amadora City Hall’s CNBDI (or National Center of Comics and Image), during its annual comic festival – the Amadora BD.
It’s my pleasure to announce that, for a third time, an All-Girlz comics was nominated in the Best Fanzine category, with the results to be released this Saturday, around 18h30, in the multi-purpose events building Recreios da Amadora.

The title in question is All-Girlz Banzai!, which was published last November and is exclusively dedicated to portuguese mangá, having chosen as its embassators authors Joana Lafuente and Selma Pimentel, two young artists that represent the best that oriental sequential art has to offer, in Portugal.
Wether 3rd time’s the charm or not, I’d like to thank the juries that voted for us, because I feel that the honor bestowed in the authors work and in the edition itself, through this nomination, is already acknowlegment enough;)

O livro “Infante Portugal e a Íntima Capitulação” é apresentado hoje no 21º Amadora BD. Aproveito a ocasião para agradecer ao autor José de Matos-Cruz pela simpatia e paciência ao longo desta colaboração, e por me dar a oportunidade de contribuir para a mitologia do seu herói, Rui Ruivo, aliás Infante Portugal!

The book “Infante Portugal e a Íntima Capitulação” is presented today at the 21th Amadora BD ‘con. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank author José de Matos-Cruz for his immense kindness and patience throught this collaboration, and for giving me the chance to contribute to the mythology of his hero, Rui Ruivo, aka Infante Portugal!

Continuando com os esboços para “Infante Portugal e a Íntima Capitulação”, de José de Matos-Cruz, mostro os estudos da actualização do herói, inicialmente concebido pelo (veterano) autor José Garcês. A versão anterior era mais humorada, o que acompanhava o teor parodiante da obra, mas preferi fazer algo diferente, mais sofisticado e evocativo.

Fiz cinco protecções – nas ombreiras, pulsos e fivela – como ref.ª às quinas do brasão na bandeira, e além dos habituais verde e vermelho, tentei que no tronco/coxas o fato evocasse as túnicas dos cavaleiros medievais. Para símbolo, recorri à Lis, que substitui o brasão no peito. Enfim, uma concepção foi mais orientada para o “Portugal” do que para “Infante.”

Continuing with the sketches for “Infante Portugal e a Íntima Capitulação”, by José de Matos-Cruz, today I showcase the studies for the hero’s revamp, who was initicially created by (veteran) artist José Garcês. The previous versions were a lot more humorous, which is keeping with the work’s parody tone, but I went for something more sofisticate and evocative.

I used several references to the shield in the flag and, along with the traditional red & green, tried to have the torso/hips mirror the vests of medieval knights. As for symbol, I replaced the shield in his chest with a “Lis”, the portuguese cross seen in the sails of the Discovery era caravells.

Infante Portugal: Chat Noir & Boule de Niege illustration

Aqui está o desenho para a capa de capítulo de “Infante Portugal e a Íntima Capitulação”, de José de Matos-Cruz, relativo aos personagens franceses Chat Noir & Boule de Niege. ‘Boule deveria ser inspirada na actriz Tilda Swinton mas, sendo igualmente ruiva, acabei antes por pedir à minha namorada para posar para mim;)

E porque ia fazer uma outra ilustração para o livro, pedi ao meu amigo Daniel Henriques para arte-finalizar esta imagem por mim, dado que as suas influências artísticas em McFarlane/Mikki funcionariam melhor para o negrume pariense pretendido.

Infante Portugal sketch I

Há alguns meses, o autor José de Matos-Cruz convidou-me a colaborar no 2º livro de prosa sobre o seu super-herói, Infante Portugal. Inicialmente, ia criar e ilustrar uma dupla de personagens franceses felinos, chamados Chat Noir & Boule de Niege (i.e. Gato Preto e Bola-de-Neve), para uma capa de capítulo, mas pouco depois tive também a honra de poder recriar o herói titular para esta nova edição, ilustrando o próprio Infante numa outra capa de capítulo.

A nova paródia, intitulada “Infante Portugal e a Íntima Capitulação”, é apresentada este fim-de-semana no 21º Amadora BD. Também participam os ilustradores João Amaral, Ana Biscaia, Cação Biscaia, Ricardo Cabral, Dinis Conefrey, Fernando Filipe, Sara Franco, Rui Lacas, João Vasco Leal, João Mascarenhas, Baptista Mendes, Susa Monteiro, Nuno Pereira, Miguel Rocha, André Ruivo, Carlos Zíngaro e ainda o jovem Daniel Henriques, arte-finalizando uma imagem minha.

Os próximos posts vão destacar estes trabalhos, começando com vários sketches para Chat Noir & Boule de Niege.

Primeiro tentei uma abordagem “homem em fato”, até o José me sugerir que, sendo eles criaturas mágicas – algo mais enraizado no folclore lusitano, no qual a obra vai beber – uma perspectiva antropomórfica seria preferível…

Gostei da ideia de mostrar personagens mutantes que, todavia, sentissem necessidade de usar máscara. Sendo a Boule de Niege mais humanizada e delicada (usámos a Tilda Swinton como referência), fiz estas máscaras felinas, inspiradas nas fantasias Venezianas.

Alguns esboços para Chat Noir, que deveria ser reminescente a Clark Gable.

Por fim, estudos de composição para a ilustração, figurando o duo em telhados, com a Torre Eiffel por entre a neblina…


A few months ago, author José de Matos-Cruz invited me to collaborate in the 2nd prose novel of his superhero character, Infante Portugal (i.e. Infante/Infant being a rank or title given to sons and daughters of the king, that weren’t heirs to the throne). Initially, I was to create and illustrate a chapter cover with a French “Were-cats” couple, called Chat Noir & Boule de Niege (i.e. Black Cat & Snow-ball), but shortly afterwards was also given the honour of recreating the title character for this new book, drawing the ‘Infante himself on another chapter illustration.

This new (parody) novel, intitled “Infante Portugal e a Íntima Capitulação”, will the presented this weekend at the 21th Amadora BD comic festival. Also participating are fellow illustrators João Amaral, Ana Biscaia, Cação Biscaia, Ricardo Cabral, Dinis Conefrey, Fernando Filipe, Sara Franco, Rui Lacas, João Vasco Leal, João Mascarenhas, Baptista Mendes, Susa Monteiro, Nuno Pereira, Miguel Rocha, André Ruivo, Carlos Zíngaro and Daniel Henriques, inking an image of mine.

The forthcoming posts will showcase the works I did, starting off with several sketches for Chat Noir & Boule de Niege.

I first went for the “guy in suit” approach, until José suggested that, given that they were magical creatures – something more rooted in portuguese lore, in which the work derives from – a more anthropomorphic take would be preferable…

I liked the iddea of showing a mutated character that, nevertheless, felt the need to use a mask. Since Boule de Niege was more humanized and gentle (we used Tilda Swinton as reference), I drew these feline-looking masks for her, inspired in Venezian fantasies.
