Sandocha de Manápula!

Inserido no Ciclo de Homenagem a Robert E. Howard que tenho coordenado no 'zine Tertúlia BDzine, foi distribuído em Julho a 5ª banda desenhada do tributo, intitulada “Titãs de Hong Kong”, evocando o marujo boxeur “Sailor” Steve Costigan.

Costigan é um duro mas bronco pugilista, que nos contos de REH acaba por sair vitorioso no último instante, como que bafejado pela proverbial “sorte do irlandês.” Inicialmente igual a outros nos pulp de combate dos 30’s, Costigan destacou-se não só devido ao talento de Howard mas também por assumir o “burlesco” e comicidade da sua narrativa.

Foi o que tentei recriar no guião, inclusivamente chamando Dennis Dorgan à história, o qual, como era frequente então, funcionava como  alias de Costigan (como Kalidor é de Conan…), um nome por que o herói respondia para passar incógnito, permitindo ao escritor contornar contratos com a editora e vender mais contos daquela criação noutros periódicos. Os tempos eram difíceis na altura…

Tal como Conan, Costigan foi das criações de Howard que mais espelhava a personalidade e desejos do escritor, também ele um boxeur e de sangue irlandês. Daqui a tempos, quando estiver esgotado o manancial dos heróis mais célebres, como os remake de Conan e Sonja (ok, esta é só inspirada na sua original Red Sonya of Rogatino…), mais Solomon Kane e o vindouro Bran Mak Morn, quiçá surja novo “Cinderella Man” à lá Howard (...o escritor) ;)

Convidei Heguinil Mendes para desenhar a ‘curta, após me aperceber do seu talento quando participou na iniciativa CC: Cadavre Exquis. Adaptando a acção ao seu jeito, o trabalho do Heguinil é dos mais frescos e reveladores de potencial que tenho visto a nível nacional nos últimos anos.

Inserted in the Robert E. Howard Homage Cicle that I’m coordinating in a comics fanzine, the short story “Titans of Hong Kong”, featuring the boxeur seaman “Sailor” Steve Costigan, was distributed last July.

Costigan is a tough but dumb prize fighter, that in REH’s tales end’s up winning at the last minute, as if favoured by the proverbial “luck of the Irish.” Similar to other characters in the 30’s pulps, Costigan stood out not only because of Howard’s talent but also for accepting the burlesc and humorous nature of its narrative.

I tried to recreate that in the script, also calling Dennis Dorgan into the story, a character which, as was frequent at the time, funtioned as an alias (like Kalidor was Conan’s…), a name the hero went by to go around incognito, thus alowing the writer to further exploit his creation on other periodicals, by-passing eventual publication agreements.

Like with Conan, Costigan is one of Howard’s heroes that best reflect its creator’s personality and desires, him also being a boxeur and of irish blood. Perhaps once the more famous character’s have been exausted, such as Conan’s remake, Sonja’s (ok, she was inspired by Red Sonya of Rogatino), plus Solomon Kane and the forthcoming Bran Mak Morn, we’ll have a new “Cinderella Man” movie, à lá Howard (…the writer) ;)

I’ve invited artist Heguinil Mendes to draw this comic, after seeing his potencial in my Cadavre Exquis project. Adapting the action to his style, Heguinil’s work remains one of the freshest, most talented I’ve seen in Portugal over the last few years.

S&M vs. Spandex

Há uns anos, fiquei sem uma pasta repleta(!) de trabalhos, tanto BDs finalizadas como ilustrações publicitárias. Se isso em si já foi catastrófico, pior ainda foi conter lá originais encomendados a uma amiga, a autora Maria João Careto. Por sorte, as suas pranchas pertenciam ao lote que já havia sido digitalizado; entretanto, quis redimir-me oferecendo-lhe uma comissão, que ela escolheu ser esta Catwoman…

A few years back, a briefcase filled(!) with artwork was taken from me, containing from finished comic pages to advertising illustrations. Although the loss was catastrophic, worser still was losing original artworks commissioned to a friend, author Maria João Careto. Luckily, her artboards were amongst the few that had already been scanned; meanwhile, I tried to redeemed myself offering her a commission, which she choose to be this Catwoman…

No rest for the wicked

Bem-vindos ao meu novo blog! …Já se passou um tempo, pelo que decidi largar o antigo, Templo Maia (podem ver aqui o post final), e começar de fresco com este.

Começo pelo ponto da situação. Antes de mais, abandonei o website-portfólio DanielMaia.com. Devido a problemas no alojamento, que há quase dois anos me impedia de efectuar updates, e porque por isso ambos o webdesign e conteúdos estavam embaraçosamente desactualizados, deixei expirar o domínio. Até criar novo site, podem seguir os meus novos trabalhos e notícias aqui, e em breve também em redes sociais como Deviantart, etc. Anúncio tudo assim que esteja pronto.

Outra “novidade”, para elucidar muito boa gente, é que o Estúdio Hydra que integrava foi decepado há quase 2 anos. Em Janeiro de 2008, por desavença com a administração, decidimos largar o espaço. E como, após um período sabático, não nos foi possível encontrar outro local que conviesse os quatro, pois estávamos espalhados quais pontos cardeais, acabámos por nos separar amigavelmente. Para sanar mais equívocos e deflectir suspeitas infundadas, fiz recentemente um derradeiro post no blog do grupo. “Let Hercules himself do what he may.”;P

Em meados de 2008, aluguei um novo estúdio mais perto de casa. Não será a melhor das masmorras no mercado, mas é bastante acolhedora para uma pessoa e permite ter lá colegas a trabalhar ou em companhia, assim como reunir com clientes. Já está prometido a um amigo um studio tour virtual, mas por ora deixo só umas fotos…

De resto, há várias f.a.q. a comentar e trabalhos-em-progresso e terminados por mostrar, mas vamos com calma. Por agora, obrigado pela atenção e visita. Até breve (…leia-se, “amanhã”)!

Welcome to my new blog! …It’s been a while, so I decided to drop my old blog, Templo Maia, and begin anew with this one (checkout the final post here).

First, a situation overhaul. For starters, I’ve abandoned my portfólio-website, DanielMaia.com. Due to growing problems with the server, that for nearly two years kept me from making updates, and because both the webdesign and contents were sorely out-of-date, I just let the domain expire. Until I put up a new one, you can follow up on new works and news from me here, and soon on other net communities also, like Deviantart, et al. I’ll announce it when all it’s a Go.

Another “old” news, to shed a light to some fine folks, is that the Hydra Studio to which I belonged was beheaded almost 2 years ago. In January 2008, due to quarrels with the landlords, we decided to dump the space. But because we lived too far apart, scattered like cardinal directions, and couldn’t find an affordable new spot that pleased all four of us, we simply separated on good terms. To stop baseless suspicions and deflect other misunderstandings concerning it, there’s one final post on the group’s blog. “Let Hercules himself do what he may…” ;)

Then, around middle of 2008, I rented a new studio nearer home. It’s not the best dungeon in the marketplace, but it’s more then enough for one person and allows for having colleagues over to work or hang out, plus meeting with clients. I already promissed a virtual studio tour to a friend, but for now here’s a just couple of photos…
