Abrindo a Escotilha | Opening the Hatch

Bom 2013! Parece que só agora saí do bunker, mas tenho andado cá na superfície e reactivo o blog com revista ao ano transacto: Profissionalmente, entre publicidade e ilustração, marquei o ano com um (tímido) regresso à BD (que está sempre cá, notem, mas falo a nível público), primeiro com desenhos no 3º livro do Infante Portugal e, mais tarde, com amostras da transposição do herói para arte sequencial, integradas na retrospectiva no 23º Amadora BD. Embora aviste interesses do sector estrangeiro, por cá não podia ter escolhido melhor projecto para “desentorpecer os músculos narrativos” e sou um sortudo por o fazer junto do escritor José de Matos-Cruz!

O novo ano começou também sob o signo do Infante, enquanto avançamos o álbum, que está a ser divertido tecer; depois de desajustes em passadas investidas, é bom prestar-me em algo cujo destino sinto que controlo. Prometo novidades para breve.

2012 foi também o ano que me afastei do Troféus Central Comics, que vinha a acompanhar desde o início e que co-organizei durante uns anos, mas cuja promoção me tirava tempo necessário para dedicar ao meu percurso autoral; achei que a 10ª edição devia ser a última, embora ainda tenha ajudado a preparar o Troféus Central Comics: Heróis da Década (TCC-HD), o “best of” actualmente em curso. Desejo boa sorte aos vindouros jurados!

Olhando para 2013, ao recuperar projectos dispersos e reatando contacto com redes sociais e comunidades artísticas, é com prazer que me vejo rodeado dos melhores colegas que podia pedir, eles próprios em plena mudança e engrenados para a vida que pretendem. Com isso em mente, desejo um 2013 em grande àqueles que estão perto …e aos que passam por cá ;)

Extra: Fico feliz também por anunciar que este é o 100º POST do blog. Alguém me desafia a duplicá-lo, em 2013?

Happy 2013! It might seem I only now left the bunker, but I've been walking the surface all along and am reactivating the blog with a brief assessment of the past year: Professionally, amidst advertising and illustrations, 2012 marked my (timid) return to comics (ever present, mind you, but I meant it publically), first with drawings in the 3rd Infante Portugal book and, later on, with samples of the hero’s transposition into sequential art, included in a 23rd Amadora BD comics-con exhibit. Although I’ve been getting some interest coming from foreign markets, around here I couldn’t chose a better project to begin "exercising the narrative muscles" and am lucky to do it alongside writer José de Matos-Cruz!

This year also began under the Infante’s sign, while we advance the graphic novel, which has been exciting to develop; after disruptions in past attempts, it’s good to dedicate myself to a work whose fate I feel I can control. I’ll have more news soon.

2012 was also the year I parted with the CentralComics Awards, which I followed from the start and even co-organized for a few years, but whose promotion took time I needed in order to progress my comics’ work; I felt the 10th edition should be my last, although I still helped to prepare the Central Comics Awards: Heroes of the Decade (TCC-HD), its ongoing "best of" event. Lots of luck to the forthcoming juries!

Looking towards 2013, while recovering scattered projects and resuming contact on social networks and art communities, I’m elated to find myself surrounded by the best colleagues I could ask for, they themselves amidst changes and all geared up for the life they want. With that in mind, I wish you all a great 2013, both those who are near me …and those that just stop by ;)

Extra: I’m also glad to announce this is the blog’s 100th POST. Does someone challenge me to double it, in 2013?...

TCC:HD – Votação

Como referi ontem, começou a votação do Troféus Central Comics – Heróis da Década (que podem conhecer em detalhe aqui e no anúncio oficial). O promotor Hugo Jesus está ausente nos próximos dias, pelo que só depois do Natal vão ser notificados os nomeados e carregadas as imagens de referência no portal. Porém, os leitores mais informados já podem participar no prémio e votar nos seus autores e obras favoritas – acede aqui ao Boletimde Voto!

As I mentioned yesterday, voting has begun on the Trophies Central Comics - Heroes of the Decade award event (read about it in detail here and in the official announcement). Promoter Hugo Jesus will be absent in the coming days, so the nominees will only be addressed after Xmas and the reference images uploaded. Still, the more informed readers can participate in the award right now and vote on their favorite authors and works. Access the Ballot here!

Soldado da 1ª Guerra Mundial | WW1 Portuguese Soldier

Encerrou no dia 15 a iniciativa BD ao Forte, que ajudou a marcar o trimestre em matéria de eventos de BD e Ilustração. Desde já, parabéns ao André Oliveira, que tutelou o evento, e também aos participantes, nas suas várias vertentes, que expressaram o desejo de não deixar as artes sucumbirem à apatia, apesar da famigerada crise que vimos a sentir

Tive o prazer de participar na expo Combatentes, alusiva às figurações do soldado português ao longo dos tempos, a qual criou uma ligação do evento ao local onde teve lugar, no Museu dos Combatentes (Belém, Lisboa). Optei pelo Soldado da 1ª Guerra Mundial porque sempre tive maior afinidade com esse período, em parte por o meu pai ser um aficionado da Era, com uma extensa biblioteca e memorabília que pude usar para pesquisa. Pelo mesmo motivo, a colega de estúdio Susana Resende ficou a cargo da representação do mesmo soldado na frente de combate nas Áfricas.

Infelizmente, apesar da paciência do André, fiquei aquém do objectivo, porque não consegui (por pouco!) acabar a pintura digital da ilustração, sendo esta exposta “crua”, a lápis. Agradeço, todavia, os elogios que me deram pelo trabalho e comprometo-me a partilhar aqui a imagem final assim que possível.

The initiativeBD ao Forte (Comics in the Fort) ended last week, an event that helped mark the season regarding events about comics and Illustration. Congratulations to André Oliveira, who was responsible for the event, and also to the participants in its various aspects, that so expressed a desire to not let the Arts succumb to apathy, despite the crisis that we’re passing…

I had the pleasure of participate in the Combatants exhibit, pertaining to Portuguese soldier’s look along the ages, which tied the event to were it was held, at the Museum of Combatants (Belém, Lisbon). I opted for the Soldier of World War 1, because I always had more affinity with that period, partly because my father is a WW aficionado, with an extensive library and memorabilia that I could use for research. For the same reason, my colleague Susana Resende was entrusted to represent the same soldier in the African combat front.

Unfortunately, despite André’s patience, I missed the goal because I couldn’t (by a hair!) finish the illustration’s digital painting, thus having it shown "raw", in pencils form. I appreciate, however, all the praise people gave the work and pledge myself to share the final image here, as soon as possible.

Troféus Central Comics – Heróis da Década

…Não é o fim do mundo, é só o fim do 1º ciclo do prémio Central Comics, cujo evento de comemoração, o Troféus Central Comics: Heróis da Década, está prestes a começar, decorrendo de 21 Dezembro a 31 de Janeiro 2013, no Portal Central Comics.

Concebido e sugerido por mim mesmo há algum tempo atrás, como acto final enquanto no júri do prémio, o TCC-HD propõe aos leitores decidir quais as mais intemporais obras e marcantes autores consagrados pelo público em 10 anos de ‘Troféus, para fechar o ciclo com chave de ouro. Será uma espécie de “o Melhor dos Melhores” informal, para celebrar todos os vencedores e, com eles, o próprio prémio, que começa a 11ª edição no próximo ano. Pela minha parte, surjo nos nomeados a TCC:HD – Melhor Artista 2001-2012 (premiado pelo IV TCC, salvo erro) e TCC:HD – Melhor Publicação Independente 2001-2012, como editor dos fanzines All-Girlz (premiados no VIII TCC), e sou acompanhado, entre outros colegas, pela Joana Lafuente e Nuno Sarabando, respectivamente eleitos pelas BDs “Dream Machine 2.1” e “Kull: O Fim” que igualmente editei. Fica sempre a pena doutros valiosos autores e títulos faltarem à chamada, mas desde já dou os meus parabéns a todos os envolvidos e boa sorte na votação!

…It’s not the End of the World, just the end of the Central Comics awards’ 1st cycle, which commemorative event, the Trophies Central Comics: Heroes of the Decade , is about to begin, running from December 21 to January 31, 2013, at the Central Comics news Portal.

Created and suggested by myself some time ago, as a final act amongst the event’s jury, the TCC-HD offers readers a chance to decide what were the most timeless works and most striking authors awarded by the public in 10 years of ‘Trophies, to wrap-up the cycle with gold trimmings. It’ll be a sort of informal "Best of the Best", to celebrate all the winners and, along with them, the award itself, which starts its 11th edition next year. For my part, I appear in the TCC-HD nominees for Best Artist and Best Independent Publication 2001-2012, as publisher/editor of the All-Girlz comics, and am accompanied, amongst other colleagues, by artists Joana Lafuente and Nuno Sarabando, who were respectively elected for their short stories "Dream Machine 2.1" and "Kull: The End", which I also published. It’s always a pity many other valuable authors and titles miss the call, but I’d like to give my greetings to all involved and wish good luck in the voting!

Autógrafos e Painel de Discussão | Autographs and Discution Panel

Apesar de umas semanas complicadas, eis-me de volta aos posts… E de volta a autógrafos! Há uns anos arredado das andanças, à medida que regresso ao sector há que os enfrentar. Mas sem apreensão – a rapidez de traço estava lá e pude privar com miúdos e graúdos, que fizeram o favor de me manter ocupado o tempo inteiro nas sessões no 23º AmadoraBD. Houve momentos caricatos, claro, como quando fiquei um bom minuto a puxar pela cabeça com a rapariga que, incautamente, me pediu “um vilão”, com branca sobre quem desenhar, ou quando percebi que não sabia como raio era a tiara da WonderWoman!... E até uma Pão-de-Law pediram!:)

Fora casos insólitos, tive o imenso prazer de partilhar a mesa com o José de Matos-Cruz (cujo talento a escrever dedicatórias supera o meu para as desenhar) e acompanhar a estreia da Susana Resende nestas lides, que será a 1ª de muitas, acredito. E, claro, justificar a minha inclusão no projecto Infante Portugal com uns rabiscos esmerados; não estava mentalizado para a responsabilidade, mas espero ter estado à altura.

Sobre Fórum Fantástico 2012, organizado pelo Rogério Ribeiro, só (me) aponto a falha de não ter usufruido mais do programa. Só estive no painel de “Banda-Desenhada” e participei no seguinte, sobre “Super-Heróis à Portuguesa”, que soube a pouco. Além do José e eu termos falado da transição de O Infante Portugal para BD, pude saber sobre o projecto do Nuno Amado para recuperar em BD a personagem Zakarella, e da iminência da 2ª antológia de Os Anos de Ouro da PulpFiction Portuguesa, por Luís Filipe Silva. Por último, a “roubar o show”, deu-se a exibição exclusiva do episódio-piloto da série TV Capitão Falcão, no prelo – acreditem, vale a pena! Vejam o trailer…

After a few busy weeks, I’m back to postings… And back to signings! A few years apart from these things, as I return to the field so they have to be faced. But not to fret - line speed was there and I was able to chat with fans, which did the favor of keeping me busy for the sessions’ duration at 23rd Amadora BD comic-con. There were funny moments, as when I spent a good minute thinking with a girl who, incautiously, asked me for "a villain", having a blank on just who to draw, or when I realized I didn’t know how the hell WonderWoman’s tiara was!... I even got asked for a Pão-de-Law!:)

Insolit cases aside, I had a great pleasure in sharing the table with José de Matos-Cruz (whose autographs writing talent surpass my ability’ to draw then) and follow Susana Resende’s debut of the proceedings, which will be her first of many occasions I’m sure. And, of course, justify my inclusion in the Infante Portugal project with a few doodles; I wasn’t prepared for it, but hope that the drawings have lived up to expectations.

Concerning Forum Fantastic 2012, promoted by Rogério Ribeiro, I’ve only to point out (my) flaw in not having enjoyed more of its program. I only been at the panel on "Comics" and participated in the following one, “Portuguese type Super-Heroes", that I wished could’ve lasted longer. Besides José and I speaking again about Infante Portugal’s transition into comics form, I also learned about Nuno Amado’s project to recover the comics' character Zakarella, and the forthcoming 2nd anthology of The Golden Years of Portuguese Pulp Fiction, by Luís Filipe Silva. Finally, "stealing the show", we were shown in exclusivity the pilot episode for Captain Falcon TV series – which, believe me, was worth it! Watch the trailer...

Infante Portugal: Amostras a Lápis | Pencils Samples

Sem revelar demasiado antes do tempo, mostro hoje algumas páginas a lápis da sequência de prólogo da BD do Infante Portugal, escritas (e descritas) pelo José de Matos-Cruz e apresentada na exposição do 23º AmadoraBD.

São, respectivamente, as páginas 2 e 3, com a queda de cometa na zona de Lisboa numa época anterior ao país; esboço da página 9, onde um ardina anuncia o paladino Condestável Lusitano (criado por José Ruy) que, após o estudo, foi arte-finalizado à la prima em mesa-de-luz; e páginas 12 e 13, que introduzem o protagonista (criado por José Garcês), a folhear o mítico Livro Livre no reduto da sua biblioteca.

Without revealing too much before its time, here’s a few pages in pencils of the Infante Portugal’s comic prologue sequence, written (and described) by José de Matos-Cruz and presented at the 23rdAmadoraBD exhibition. They are, respectively, pages 2 and 3, with on a comet falling in Lisbon’s area, on a time preceding the country; sketch of page 9, where a paperboy announces the paladin Constable Lusitano (created by José Ruy), after which study I inked the splash-page directly à la prima on a light-box; and pages 12 and 13, that present the protagonist (created by José Garcês), flipping through the mythical Livro Livre (Free Book) in his library.

Embora esteja SEMPRE a fazer BD, seja qual for o trabalho profissional a ocupar-me no momento, estas páginas são simbólicas pois representam o começo de um novo projecto e desafio pessoal, de regresso às lides da arte sequencial, e porque nelas pude realizar algo que nunca pensei ser possível: assinar pranchas em conjunto com dois grandes mestres de BD, como o José Garcês e José Ruy, com cujas obras cresci e admiro. E last but not least, por também contar com a participação do colega e caro amigo Daniel Henriques na arte-final (neste grupo, nas páginas 12 e 13), que irei mostrar noutra ocasião, em breve.

Although I’m ALWAYS doing comics, no matter what professional work I’m doing at the moment, these pages are symbolic since they represent the start of a new project and a personal challenge, in returning to sequential arts, and because in them I could accomplish something I never thought possible: to work alongside two great Portuguese comics masters, such as José Garcês and José Ruy, whose works I grew up with and admire. And also, last but not least, for having the participation of my colleague and buddy Daniel Henriques on inking (in this group, on pages 12 and 13), which I’ll show another time, soon.

Super-Heróis no Fórum Fantástico 2012

Um evento que já faz bem parte do panorama anual da literatura (fantástica e não só), mais escapadelas na BD e outras áreas de afinidade, o Fórum Fantástico 2012 abriu ontem as portas com uma programação bastante completa e bons autores no cartaz – que podem consultar em maior detalhe no respectivo blog.

Acompanhando o escritor José de Matos-Cruz enquanto representantes do projecto O Infante Portugal, participo no painel de conversação sobre “Super-Heróis à Portuguesa”, este Domingo às 17h45, na Biblioteca Orlando Ribeiro. Apareçam!

Already well-established as part of the annual list of events regarding literature (fantastic and others), along with forays into comics and areas of affinity, the Forum Fantastic 2012 opened its doors yesterday with a handsome program and great authors on the poster - which can be consulted in detail on their blog.

Accompanying writer José de Matos-Cruz as representatives of the Infante Portugal project, I’m taking part of the conversation panel about "Portuguese type Superheroes", this Sunday at 17:45 in the Library Orlando Ribeiro.
