Cada vez mais dou por mim a investir em artbooks e livros técnicos sobre desenho do que efectivamente em comics e álbuns. Nem a propósito, faço aqui destaque a leituras recentes: falo dos 2 volumes de Drawn to Life, do animador Walt Stanchfield (boa descoberta por uma amiga), e de The Ultimate Comics Studio, do Bryan Hitch. Não vou dissecar cada livro, mas friso que ambos são boas aquisições, interessantes leituras e particularmente válidas para quem trabalha ou pretende trabalhar no sector.

Embora os “opus” de Stanchfield sejam clássicos-instantâneos e se destaquem claramente, não fosse ele um iluminado da narrativa sequencial e dos principais mentores da Disney, para além dos ensinamentos ali feitos, concordantes com as seminais lições de desenho de Nikolaides, há também partilhas inestimáveis de saberes, transversais à prática do desenho e posturas salutares de vida – como o título indica – para mais dinâmicas e criativas produções pessoais. Como bónus, os livros surgem polvilhados de pequenos episódios biográficos que os tornam tão-mais inspiradores.

Já o livro de Hitch assume-se como um híbrido de artbook e manual para criação de BD, ao estilo mainstream americano. Apesar de algumas insuficiências e gralhas do ponto de vista editorial, a experiência e capacidades do autor fazem deste o melhor livro “How-to” que já vi sobre o assunto; especialmente porque Hitch foi generoso ao ponto de partilhar truques e cuidados usualmente omitidos/desconhecidos doutros tutoriais, discursando sobre fases bastante detalhadas da produção com diversos exemplos pertinentes, razão pela qual este talvez seja de facto um ultimate manual para desenhistas.

Se alguém já os tiver lido, estejam à vontade para partilhar o que acharam.

More and more, I find myself investing in artbooks and technical books rather than actual comics or graphic novels. With that in mind, today I’m gonna spotlight two recent buys: namely, the two Drawn to Life volumes from master animator Walt Stanchfield (a good find by a friend), and The Ultimate Comics Studio, by Bryan Hitch. I’m not gonna dissect each book, but will state that both would be clever buys, interesting readings and particularly valid for anyone who works or aims to work in the field.

Although Stanchfield’s “opus” are instant-classics and out-stage similar existing books, give he’s a sequential narrative alumnus and was a chief mentor at Disney, aside from the teachings therein, concordant with Nikolaides seminal drawing lessons, there’s also priceless sharing of knowledge, transversal to the practice of drawing and healthy attitudes towards life – as the title hints – for achieving more dynamic and creative productions. As a bonus, the books are filled with brief biographical episodes that make them all the more inspiring.

As for Hitch’s book, it ascertains itself as a hybrid between artbook & mainstream American comics’ production manual. Besides a few insufficiencies and typos from an editorial standpoint, the author’s experience and abilities make this the best “How-to” book I’ve seen on the subject; especially because Hitch was generous enough to share various tricks and considerations usually omitted/unknown to other such tutorials, approaching fairly detailed production stages with several relevant examples, which stands to reason why this may very well be the ultimate manual for comic artists.

Estas são duas artes-finais que fiz há 1 ano atrás, a partir do diário gráfico da artista Susana Resende. Neste caso, eram estudos soltos, pelo que tive alguma margem para interpretação; no 2º desenho (ainda com linhas a lápis), segui menos o traço dela e tentei criar um personagem.

These two inkings were done a year ago, from live drawings by artist Susana Resende. In this case, the drawings were loose studies, so I had some room for interpretation; in the 2nd drawing (still with its pencil lines), I followed her style less and tried to make up a character.

Novo Venom

Ainda fresca, esta ilustração do novo Venom da Marvel foi uma comissão para o amigo Daniel Henriques, que além de ter assinado o póster oficial do VIII Troféus Central Comics, se tem aplicado em desenvolver arte-final para comics. Talvez em breve possa mostrar aqui uma versão ‘inkada disto…?

Still fresh, this illustration of Marvel Comics’ New Venom was a commission done for my friend Daniel Henriques, whom aside having created the official poster for the VIII Troféus Central Comics, has also began to develop inking for comics. Maybe I can post here an inked version of this sometime soon…?

VII Festival Internacional de BD de Beja

Apesar da crise, abriu portas o VII Festival Internacional BD de Beja (FIBDB). Já é sabido que este evento da planície é das melhores referências em festivais de BD ibérica, pela sobriedade e excelência de execução, e eclectismo entre o comercial e independente com que pauta as expos e convida autores. Entre 28 Maio e 12 Junho, os locais costumeiros – a Casa da Cultura de Beja (sede da Bedeteca de Beja), Biblioteca Municipal José Saramago, Museu Jorge Vieira, Galeria do Desassossego, Museu Regional e Teatro Municipal Pax Julia – acolhem as mostras e programação frisadas no site oficial.

Embora tenha visitado o festival num fim-de-semana desastroso, com uma chuvada brutal que até teve direito a granizo, o clima de descontracção e oportunidade para tertuliar com amigos não enegreceu minimamente a experiência – antes pelo contrário. Para a memória fica o team-work urgente em que eu, o Tiago (Mongorhead Comics), o Silvestre (aka Véte BD) e o Paulo (Director do FIBDB) nos armámos de vassouras para aliviar uma pesada bolsa de água que se acumulava num recanto do toldo da zona comercial;)

Resta salientar o bom: o já mencionado fantástico trabalho e cuidados nas expo; e mau: o facto de este ano não ter havido propostas de trabalho para edição na Colecção Toupeira…

Aproveito para divulgar que as edições Arga Warga estão disponíveis no mercado do festival.

In spite of the economic crisis, Beja’s VII International Comics Festival has opened its doors. It’s well known that this event of the plains is amongst the best reference in iberic comics’ festivals, for its sobriety & excellence in execution, and for the mainstream and independent eccletism with which it mounts the exhibits and invites authors. From 28 May to 12 June, the galleries and spots will hold the show’s various displays and program, which are shown in the official website.

Although I choose a disastrous weekend to visit it, due to a brutal thunder storm that also rained hail, the atmosphere of relax and chance to gather with friends didn’t dim the experience in the slightest – quite the opposite. Faded to memory is the urgent team-work in which I, along with Tiago (of Mongorhead Comics), Silvestre (aka Véte BD) and Paulo (director of the festival) armed ourselves with brooms in order to relieve a heavy pocket of water that was forming in a corner of the tent of the commercial area;)

The good: the already mentioned amazing work and carefulness in the exhibits, plus distribution of spaces; the bad: the fact that this year no one present work to publish in the comic of Toupeira Collection…

All-Girlz vence nos VIII Troféus Central Comics!

Tem sido até aqui um feliz hábito os comics All-Girlz terem reconhecimento por parte dos prémios de BD nacionais – significa que fizemos algo bem! Após nomeações para Melhor Fanzine conferidas ao All-Girlzine, em 2006, nos Prémios Nacionais de BD (PNBD), e no ano seguinte, nos V Troféus Central Comics (TCC), estas repetem-se mais tarde nos PNBDs do 20º e 21º Amadora BD, destacando então as novas antológicas da iniciativa, Galore e Banzai!

Na sequência dessas, os comics All-Girlz Galore e All-Girlz Banzai!, sob o título genérico da colecção, foram ainda distinguidos como candidatos no VIII Troféus Central Comics/2010. Como editor deste projecto independente, é com prazer que divulgo o público ter atribuído ao All-Girlz os dois prémios em que estava nomeado, nomeadamente Melhor Fanzine e Melhor Obra Curta, sendo este último relativo à BD “Dream Machine 2.1”, de Joana Lafuente (in Banzai!). Saliento ainda a nomeação também nesta categoria de “Annushka, a Boneca”, de Andreia Rechena (in Galore). Desde já o meu obrigado e parabéns a todas as autoras envolvidas e demais colaboradores!

A cerimónia de entrega dos vencedores teve lugar em 3 de Abril no acorrido evento Anigamix 2011, na Exponor. Os TCC são os únicos prémios portugueses (e europeus?) para Banda Desenhada onde os vencedores são decididos pelos votos e preferências dos leitores, sendo promovidos de modo privado pelo portal CentralComics.com.

Thus far, it’s been a fortunate habit that my All-Girlz comics get some recognition from the Portuguese comics’ awards – means we’re doing something right! After nominations for Best Fanzine bestowed on All-Girlzine, in 2006, at the National Comics Awards (PNBD), and in the following year, at the V Central Comics Awards (TCC), these were repeated next at the 20th and 21st Amadora BD Comic-Con’s PNBD, spotlighting the new anthology titles from the initiative, ‘Galore and Banzai!

Following those, the All-Girlz Galore and All-Girlz Banzai! comics have, under generic banner, have also been distinguished as candidates at the VIII Central Comics Awards/2010. As the projects' publisher, it’s my pleasure to announce that the public has awarded us both throphies for which All-Girlz was nominated, namely Best Fanzine and Best Short Work, this last one related to Joana Lafuente’s short comic, titled “Dream Machine 2.1” (in Banzai!). Also worthy of note is the nomination in the same category of “Annushka, a Boneca”, by Andreia Rechena (in Galore). ‘My huge thanks and congratulations to every artist and collaborators involved!

The award ceremony took place April 3rd, in the successful Anigamix 2011 event, at Exponor exhibit pavilion, in Oporto. The TCC are the only Portuguese (and European?) awards were the winners are determined by the votes and preferences of the actual readers, being privately promoted by CentralComics.com portal.

All-Girlz nomeadas para Prémios de BD

Os Prémios Nacionais de Banda Desenhada (PNBD), nome actualmente dado aos “Troféus Zé Pacóvio e Grilinho”, são os mais afamados da BD portuguesa, atribuídos pelos profissionais do sector e associados do CNBDI (Central Nacional de BD e Imagem), da C. M. da Amadora, durante o festival promovido por este organismo – o Amadora BD.

É com prazer que anúncio que, pela terceira vez, um comic All-Girlz foi nomeado na categoria Melhor Fanzine, sendo os resultados divulgados este Sábado, a partir das 18h30, nos Recreios da Amadora.

O All-Girlz Banzai!, o título em causa, foi editado em Novembro transacto e dedicado exclusivamente ao mangá lusitano, escolhendo as autoras Joana Lafuente e Selma Pimentel como suas embaixadoras, duas jovens artistas que representam o melhor que a arte sequencial oriental tem para oferecer, no nosso país.
Quer à 3ª vez, seja de vez, quer não, remeto desde já uma nota de agradecimento ao júri do evento, pois entendo que a honra conferida ao trabalho das autoras e à edição em si, mediante esta nomeação, é já reconhecimento suficiente;)

The PNBD (or Comic Books National Awards) are the portuguese comics market’ most famed trophies, determined according to the votes of fellow professionals and other associates of Amadora City Hall’s CNBDI (or National Center of Comics and Image), during its annual comic festival – the Amadora BD.
It’s my pleasure to announce that, for a third time, an All-Girlz comics was nominated in the Best Fanzine category, with the results to be released this Saturday, around 18h30, in the multi-purpose events building Recreios da Amadora.

The title in question is All-Girlz Banzai!, which was published last November and is exclusively dedicated to portuguese mangá, having chosen as its embassators authors Joana Lafuente and Selma Pimentel, two young artists that represent the best that oriental sequential art has to offer, in Portugal.
Wether 3rd time’s the charm or not, I’d like to thank the juries that voted for us, because I feel that the honor bestowed in the authors work and in the edition itself, through this nomination, is already acknowlegment enough;)

Continuando com os esboços para “Infante Portugal e a Íntima Capitulação”, de José de Matos-Cruz, mostro os estudos da actualização do herói, inicialmente concebido pelo (veterano) autor José Garcês. A versão anterior era mais humorada, o que acompanhava o teor parodiante da obra, mas preferi fazer algo diferente, mais sofisticado e evocativo.

Fiz cinco protecções – nas ombreiras, pulsos e fivela – como ref.ª às quinas do brasão na bandeira, e além dos habituais verde e vermelho, tentei que no tronco/coxas o fato evocasse as túnicas dos cavaleiros medievais. Para símbolo, recorri à Lis, que substitui o brasão no peito. Enfim, uma concepção foi mais orientada para o “Portugal” do que para “Infante.”

Continuing with the sketches for “Infante Portugal e a Íntima Capitulação”, by José de Matos-Cruz, today I showcase the studies for the hero’s revamp, who was initicially created by (veteran) artist José Garcês. The previous versions were a lot more humorous, which is keeping with the work’s parody tone, but I went for something more sofisticate and evocative.

I used several references to the shield in the flag and, along with the traditional red & green, tried to have the torso/hips mirror the vests of medieval knights. As for symbol, I replaced the shield in his chest with a “Lis”, the portuguese cross seen in the sails of the Discovery era caravells.

Aqui está o desenho para a capa de capítulo de “Infante Portugal e a Íntima Capitulação”, de José de Matos-Cruz, relativo aos personagens franceses Chat Noir & Boule de Niege. ‘Boule deveria ser inspirada na actriz Tilda Swinton mas, sendo igualmente ruiva, acabei antes por pedir à minha namorada para posar para mim;)

E porque ia fazer uma outra ilustração para o livro, pedi ao meu amigo Daniel Henriques para arte-finalizar esta imagem por mim, dado que as suas influências artísticas em McFarlane/Mikki funcionariam melhor para o negrume pariense pretendido.

Infante Portugal sketch I

Há alguns meses, o autor José de Matos-Cruz convidou-me a colaborar no 2º livro de prosa sobre o seu super-herói, Infante Portugal. Inicialmente, ia criar e ilustrar uma dupla de personagens franceses felinos, chamados Chat Noir & Boule de Niege (i.e. Gato Preto e Bola-de-Neve), para uma capa de capítulo, mas pouco depois tive também a honra de poder recriar o herói titular para esta nova edição, ilustrando o próprio Infante numa outra capa de capítulo.

A nova paródia, intitulada “Infante Portugal e a Íntima Capitulação”, é apresentada este fim-de-semana no 21º Amadora BD. Também participam os ilustradores João Amaral, Ana Biscaia, Cação Biscaia, Ricardo Cabral, Dinis Conefrey, Fernando Filipe, Sara Franco, Rui Lacas, João Vasco Leal, João Mascarenhas, Baptista Mendes, Susa Monteiro, Nuno Pereira, Miguel Rocha, André Ruivo, Carlos Zíngaro e ainda o jovem Daniel Henriques, arte-finalizando uma imagem minha.

Os próximos posts vão destacar estes trabalhos, começando com vários sketches para Chat Noir & Boule de Niege.

Primeiro tentei uma abordagem “homem em fato”, até o José me sugerir que, sendo eles criaturas mágicas – algo mais enraizado no folclore lusitano, no qual a obra vai beber – uma perspectiva antropomórfica seria preferível…

Gostei da ideia de mostrar personagens mutantes que, todavia, sentissem necessidade de usar máscara. Sendo a Boule de Niege mais humanizada e delicada (usámos a Tilda Swinton como referência), fiz estas máscaras felinas, inspiradas nas fantasias Venezianas.

Alguns esboços para Chat Noir, que deveria ser reminescente a Clark Gable.

Por fim, estudos de composição para a ilustração, figurando o duo em telhados, com a Torre Eiffel por entre a neblina…

A few months ago, author José de Matos-Cruz invited me to collaborate in the 2nd prose novel of his superhero character, Infante Portugal (i.e. Infante/Infant being a rank or title given to sons and daughters of the king, that weren’t heirs to the throne). Initially, I was to create and illustrate a chapter cover with a French “Were-cats” couple, called Chat Noir & Boule de Niege (i.e. Black Cat & Snow-ball), but shortly afterwards was also given the honour of recreating the title character for this new book, drawing the ‘Infante himself on another chapter illustration.

This new (parody) novel, intitled “Infante Portugal e a Íntima Capitulação”, will the presented this weekend at the 21th Amadora BD comic festival. Also participating are fellow illustrators João Amaral, Ana Biscaia, Cação Biscaia, Ricardo Cabral, Dinis Conefrey, Fernando Filipe, Sara Franco, Rui Lacas, João Vasco Leal, João Mascarenhas, Baptista Mendes, Susa Monteiro, Nuno Pereira, Miguel Rocha, André Ruivo, Carlos Zíngaro and Daniel Henriques, inking an image of mine.

The forthcoming posts will showcase the works I did, starting off with several sketches for Chat Noir & Boule de Niege.

I first went for the “guy in suit” approach, until José suggested that, given that they were magical creatures – something more rooted in portuguese lore, in which the work derives from – a more anthropomorphic take would be preferable…

I liked the iddea of showing a mutated character that, nevertheless, felt the need to use a mask. Since Boule de Niege was more humanized and gentle (we used Tilda Swinton as reference), I drew these feline-looking masks for her, inspired in Venezian fantasies.

There’s a rustic fish restaurante that has on display a great deal of table drawings done by past costumers. While waiting for our food, I doodled this so as to contribute for the “exhibit”, but then liked it so much, for some reason, that I brought it with me. I ate squid…

Mad Max sketch

Don’t know if most of you have realized it, but this year marks the 25th anniversary of the Mad Max saga’s end. 1985 – my first year in school – was when Mel Gibson’s iconic Max Rockatansky character last roamed the post-apocalyptic Australian outback and entered cult movie status.
Although I’m a huge fan of the trilogy, the Beyond Thunderdome movie has always been my favourite (sue me!). I’ve seen it surely over 300 times by now (usually 6-8 times per year…) and it’s the one I’d most quickly name my “guilty pleasure film”, even more so than the others – Mad Max (1978) and The Road Warrior (1980). In fact, aside all the fond memories I have from childhood, renting it at the local video club over and over, sometimes consecutively!, it’s been the subject of a thesis I wrote for a college paper. I just find the mythology and symbolism, plus subtext so compelling… In fact, if I’m such a post-apoc and last-man-on-earth genre buff, it’s very likely due to the indelible impression that George Miller’s movies had on me.

I always enjoy thinking that, in some parallel dimension, the Gulf War never happened or was delayed enough for the 4th movie to reunite Gibson with his – for my money – most acclaimed creation. The following sequels (Fury Road and Furiosa) productions is set to star British actor Tom Hardy (from Inception) as Max. Hopefully it won’t suck to badly.

Coffee shop doodles

É incrível como sair para café à noite usualmente resulta em páginas de esboços soltos ou de arte conceptual, enquanto se espairece. Esta imagem já tens uns meses, foi desenhada directamente com caneta bic e sem esboços preliminares; efeito da inspiração pela minha “musa”;)

It’s amazing how going out at night for coffee usually results in pages of random sketches or concept art. This sketch is a couple months old, were drawn directly with a ball-point pen and no preliminary pencils; guess it’s the effect my “muse” has on me;)

"Chamem a Políciaaaa...!"

Mais um trabalho do final de 2009. Este projecto acabou não sendo aprovado, mas visava celebrar a banda punk-rock Os Trabalhadores do Comércio. A primeira imagem foi um estudo finalizado, num estilo de arte-final ligeiramente solto, feito com pincel, e depois seguiram-se uma ilustração e estudos para uma proposta mais cartoony.

Yet more work from the end of 2009. This project didn’t get off the ground, but was meant to spotlight Portugal’s 70’s punk-rock band Os Trabalhadores do Comércio. The first image was a finalized study with a slightly uncompromised style of brush inking, and the following illustration and sketches were studies for a more cartoony driven proposal.

Cadavre Exquis project

Há uma nova página do CC:CE online hoje. Para quem não conhece: desde 2007 que coordeno um evento contínuo de BD, cujo intuito é reunir tantos artistas portugueses quanto possível na produção de uma história conjunta, feita em método cadavre exquis*. Tivemos 50 autores até agora e acabámos de atingir a 45ª página, no que tem sido um muito excitante processo e recompensador projecto, especialmente dada a quantidade de colaboradores novatos, alguns dos quais fizeram ali a sua primeira prancha!

O método em si pode tornar-se complexo, dados os cliffhangers, constante improvisação e reinterpretação da orientação do guião, embora seja nisso que reside o desafio. Para suavizar as coisas, pus online uma sinopse da BD (ver aqui). Portanto, se gostam do conceito e querem participar, inscrevam-se. Qualquer um é bem-vindo, sejam escritores, artistas ou assistentes (ie. arte-finalista, guionista ou colorista de tons cinza).

There’s a new CC:CE page online today. For those not familiar with it: I’m coordinating a continuing comics event since 2007, aimed at uniting as many portuguese comics artists as possible in the production of a collective story, done by ways of cadavre exquis method*. I’ve had 50 authors so far and just hit the 45th page, in what’s been a very exciting process and rewarding project, especially due to the amount of newcomer collaborators, some of which have had their first experience doing a comic page there!

The method itself can get a confusing after a while, given all the cliffhangers, constant improvisation and reinterpretation of plot orientations, but therein lies the challenge. To smooth things, I’ve posted a sinopsys of the story thus far (check). So, if you like the concept and would enjoy partaking in it, write in and say so. Everyone’s welcomed, be it writer, artist or assistent (ie. inker, scripter, gray tonning).

After a hiatus of 6 months, this illustration was posted to re-open hostilities. It was finished and inked over a breakdown sketch by Nuno R. Silva.

*O que é um Cadavre Exquis/What’s a Cadavre Exquis?
É uma prática de produção cooperativa encadeada desenvolvida por pintores Surrealistas, na qual cada novo interveniente usa o trabalho imediatamente anterior como premissa/ponto de partida para a sua própria contribuição, que pode complementar ou desviar-se da orientação anteriormente sugerida. Trata-se dum exercício criativo e construtivo, no qual o resultado final congrega as diversas partes num todo.

It’s a pratice of cooperative and sequenced production developed by Surrealism artists, in which each new participant uses the former work and basis/starting point for his own contribution, which may complement or even deviait from the previously suggest orientation. It’s a creative and constructive exercice, where the end result summons up the different parts in one whole.

Olá de novo! Desculpem a longa ausência. Adventos vários (que um dia transporei para BD, pois só como “ficção” seriam acreditados) mudaram-me os planos de vida e afastaram-me de bloggar novos trabalhos, à medida que o juntar com a namorada e mudar para casa nova me foi – felizmente – roubando tempo. Aguardem mais posts em breve;)

Entretanto, em Março último, os comics do meu selo editorial Arga Warga, All-Girlz Galore e All-Girlz Banzai!, foram escolhidos para a categoria Melhor Fanzine do VIII Troféus Central Comics. Também seleccionadas foram as BDs “Annushka, a boneca”, de Andreia Rechena (in Galore), e “Dream Machine 2.1”, de Joana Lafuente (in Banzai), como nomeadas para Melhor Obra Curta; parabéns a ambas as autoras, e também às demais colaboradoras, pela contribuição para o apreço destas edições.
(Devo sublinhar que embora tenha integrado o júri responsável pelas selecções dos candidatos, não pude participar na decisão destas duas categorias, conforme indica o regulamento do evento; por isso, fico contente pelas ditas nomeações)

Hello again! Apologies for the long absence. Life-changing events (that may find their way into a comic one day, given only as “fiction” would they be believed) scrambled my plans and kept me from blogging new works, as moving together with my girlfriend and subsequent mundane dealings have – happily – stolen most of my time. Beware of more posts soon;)

In the meantime, last March my publishing seal’s Arga Warga comics’, All-Girlz Galore and All-Girlz Banzai!, were selected for the Best Fanzine category of the VIII Central Comics Awards. Also selected were the short-stories “Annushka, a boneca”, by Andreia Rechena (in Galore), and “Dream Machine 2.1”, by Joana Lafuente (in Banzai), as nominnes for Best Short Comics; congratulations to both, and to all my other collaborators, for contributing to make those such seemingly well appreciated editions.
(I must underline that although I was an invited jury, responsible for the selection of the candidates, I wasn’t allowed to partake in the decision regarding these two categories, as per the regulation of the event; hence, I’m happy for said nominations).

Tenho um ritual quando chega o novo ano: é, masoquistamente, programar todo o seguinte no que toca a BDs. Fora desvios e permuta de projectos, impossíveis de considerar de antemão, fica alinhado o que farei e quando; o que tira a espontaneidade à coisa, mas tem de ser assim, para optimizar timings.

Sem revelar tudo, devo participar num punhado de zines, uns editados por mim, havendo a hipótese dessas BD passarem por títulos estrangeiros. Em compromissos mais profissionais, está no horizonte um livro infantil, uma colectânea e álbum de âmbito comercial, para tentativo lançamento europeu. Fun stuff.

Em projectos-hobbie, prossegue a iniciativa All-Girlz, para já concluindo em All-Girlz Sayonara as estórias que começaram em Banzai!, e continua o evento CC:Cadavre Exquis, a aproximar-se da 50ª prancha…!
Fora a habitual intervenção no júri do VIII Troféus Central Comics, a integrar no VI FIBDB, devo participar noutro evento; como diz um amigo, um “nano-mini-micro-pequeno evento”, que é a única espécie passível de ser elaborada hoje em dia dada a escassez de apoios. Veremos

Quanto ao mercado EUA, é cedo para dizer, mas há projectos a rolar… Para já, continuo a colaborar com algumas produtoras, na preparação de arte e design conceptual para filmes. Não frisar “nomes" porque perante as sempre possíveis mudanças de planos ou descontinuamentos, correria o risco de falar em falso. E de resto, lá porque a agenda de 2010 já me guarda poucos segredos, não significa que tenha de vos estragar a surpresa;)

I’ve this ritual when starting out a new year, which is to, masochisticaly, program my comics agenda for the whole year ahead. A few detours side, impossible to consider as of yet, I line up what gigs I’ll do and when; which ‘kinda takes some the spontenaity out of it, but is needed in order to optimize timings.
Without goint into everything, I should participate in a few portuguese comics, some of which I’ll publish myself, with the chance that those works will end up on foreign markets. On professional commitments, there’s a children’s book on the horizon, plus a compilation and an OGN of mainstream appeal, for european release. Fun stuff.

As for hobbie-projects, my All-Girlz initiative continues with All-Girlz Sayonara, and my collective comic event CC:Cadavre Exquis also prossedes, now closing on its 50th page…! After again participating as jury in the VIII Central Comics Awards, I might try to intervene in another comics’ salon over here. We’ll see.

As for the USA industry, it’s too early to say, but there are cool projects looming… For now, I’ll continue to colaborate with conceptual design e art for a production company. Sorry if I don’t say more, but given the possibility of changes in plans or cancelation of projects, I might misspeack. And also, just because my 2010 agenda holds little secrets for me, it’s no reason to spoil the surprises…;)

Angel tattoo design

Um amigo encomendou uma ilustração para tatuagem, que lhe vai ocupar as costas(!). Depois de uns esboços, deu avalo ao design deste anjo em pedra, como pedido. ‘Um pouco tramado de fazer, no definir a imagem de forma a ser melhor interpretada pelo tatuador, não esquecendo que nem todos os efeitos desenhados são adaptáveis ou recomendáveis para reproduzir com tinta na epiderme. Felizmente, as minhas influências Nowleanas e Mignolianas ajudaram.

A friend hired me for a tattoo illustration, which will take up his whole back(!). After he a few sketches, he pinned this stone angel design as the way to go. ‘A bit tricky to do, in defining the image in a way that the tattoo artist could best interpret it, also taking in consideration that not every effect is easily adaptable or recommended to reproduce with ink on skin. Thankfully, my Nowlean and Mignolean influences helped.

20º Amadora

Começa hoje o 20º Festival Internacional de BD da Amadora, o mais popular evento nacional subordinado à Arte Sequencial, com residência no Fórum Luís de Camões, na Brandoa (a escassos quilómetros do C.C. do Colombo, para quem quiser visitar…).

A minha participação no festival este ano cinge-se a integrar o júri dos Prémios Nacionais de Banda Desenhada (PNBD), cuja deliberação teve lugar no início do mês. Apesar da apreciável qualidade dos trabalhos submetidos e respectiva dificuldade em estabelecer parâmetros de avaliação que fossem justos face à disparidade de propostas, os vencedores são das obras que melhor congregaram a arte da escrita e grafismo num todo de relevo. Porém, vão certamente ver por lá outras BDs de grande valor, por vezes mais estético ou textual, e por vezes ambos.

E vou ainda lançar, no último fim-de-semana, o novo comic do projecto All-Girlz, com trabalhos das mangakas Joana Lafuente e Selma Pimentel. Intitulado All-Girlz Banzai! e editado pelo meu selo, Arga Warga (i.e. pronuncia-se “Árga Úarga”), este prozine poderá estar disponível a partir do 2º fim-de-semana, no stand da livraria Central Comics.

Today starts the 20th Amadora’s International Comics Festival, Portugal’s most popular comics event, with residence in Fórum Luís de Camões, in Brandoa, in the outskirts of Amadora city.

My participation in this years’ convention was joining the jury of the PNBDs (National Comics Awards), which deliberated contest results earlier this month. Aside from the overwhelming quality of the submited works and respective difficulty in placing avaliation parameters that would be fair towards the disparity of proposals, the winners were some of the comics that best gongregated the art of writting and drawing in one seemless whole. Nevertheless, there were several others there of great value.

And in the festival’s last weekend I will also present the new comics of the All-Girlz project, with works from mangakas Joana Lafuente and Selma Pimentel, titled All-Girlz Banzai! and published by my small-press seal, Arga Warga (ie. pronaunced “Árga Úarga”).

All-Girlz Galore [Arga Warga; 2009]

Apresentado em Maio no V Festival Internacional BD de Beja (FIBDB), este lançamento marca o regresso do projecto All-Girlz às lides editoriais, uma iniciativa começada em 2006 que visa destacar os trabalhos das autoras portuguesas de BD, dando também a conhecer algumas estreantes no sector.

Intitulado All-Girlz Galore, este 2º comic reúne novamente uma dezena de artistas, desta feita elegendo as tendências estéticas e temáticas indie como corrente comum às obras, indo de propostas mais plásticas a técnicas/tecnológicas e passando por uma panóplia de estilos gráficos: do ousado lápis e grafite às colagens, até à sofisticada arte digital, com estilização em line-art a preto-e-branco ou em tonings a cinza.
Tematicamente, o leque estende-se por contos intimistas e humorísticos, mas sempre com teor pessoal e sexualidade à mistura, que duma forma mais declarada ou subtil não deixa de reflectir o cunho autoral destas narrativas.

Participam neste número as autoras Ana Biscaia, Andreia Rechena, Cláudia Dias, Joana Sobrinho, Marta Monteiro, Raquel Alves Coelho, Sara Franco e Sónia Oliveira, mais as estreantes (em matéria de edição em BD) Kati Zambito e Inês Casais, esta última também autora da capa da edição.

“Hunter” sequential art experiment

This is a very dear short-story to me. I was 16 when I decided to redo a simple story I had from when I was a kid, about a space explorer that lands on a primitive planet and, unsuspectingly, goes from predator to prey. The plot was basic enough but called on me to draw various things, from space-ships to dinossaurs, plus had some quiet sequences, which was all good workout.

But right from the start there were problems. I was begining to mature as an artist, so the concept and drawing stages took their toll. Growing incresingly frustrated with the less then likable results, I simply started from scratch. Over and over again…
In the span of a few months, while in high-school, I struggled with it and began the comic 4 to 5 times, sometimes pencilling the full four pages and once or twice even going into inks. But by then the endeavour had become a “doomed” one; I could neither finish it nor was I contempt when working on something else.

That’s when I came up with a different approach: to clear my head for other things but still keep at it, so I could by-pass this block, I vowed to produce solely 1 page per year until the whole thing was finished. This enabled me to view the story from a different prespective, not as bound by sequential continuity from page to page (...meta-sequential art, some would call it), and in the process I was able to check whichever artistic progress I’d suffer within that time. The plot itself was kept much the same throughout, but I let myself be carried by the pages themselves.

So, I started out in 1998, while in college, and managed to keep myself in check, only doing 1 page each year. It was releaving to face each artboard as one isolated part of the plot (ie. the landing, tracking, the first shot…), and just let the action flow. It was much the same, I think, as when a writer is lead by the story itself while writting a book, or an abstract artist gets driven by whichever work he’s doing. It was amazing to be able to exert your art that way, to trust your instints and see where they lead.

To my surprise, the story wrapped itself up in page 7. In the following year, 2005, by then grown accostumed to that “ritual”, I went back and drew another page, out of order, which then became the new 1st page. More of a splash-page, really.

Also interesting to note is that the time in each year when I drew the page varied. I kept studying and making other comics, and also working freelance in advertising, but almost never consciously decided to draw that year’s page in this or that week; it was decided for me by the building up of anxiety or creativity regarding that respective page. I just began when it felt right, like an alarm going off.

That’s why I perceive this as an experiment in sequential art, of sorts. The script was only improvised later on, when the chance came to publish the comic, but kept more or less the same voice as it had in the start and little was changed afterwards. The narrator just conveyd how rotten & vicious the Hunter was, how much he was feared throughout the galaxy, to then, in a twist, suddenly make it all insignificant when we see the character turned prey to another predator.

The first two pages were published in the music newspaper Inside, in 1999. The finished comic was published in 2005, in Sketchbook #1, a comic distributed in stores by Devir Editions. There, the artwork was digitally coloured by Rui “Kid” Moura.

Due to it, I won as Best Portuguese Artist in 2006’s IV Central Comics Awards, by majority of votes from the readers. Although thankful, of course, I felt the award was ill justified, given in came from a short story (which wasn’t uncommun in the Central Comics Awards nominations, though, where it was the actual public and readers who selected and elected the nomminies).

Perhaps, given that, I later decided to recover the story for a black & white self-published comic, adding to the story with a new prologue chapter (to be titled “Our man in Havanex IV”, a pulpy homage to Our Man in Havana, with “Havanex IV” as the name of the planet where the action took place).

...But before I had a chance to set that in motion, fate came in and invited me to prep a graphic novel based on the character. Said work is currently in production for a sci-fi european volume, to be published next year. I’ll show some samples soon.

Estas peças sofreram alterações drásticas desde o projecto original, porém; inicialmente foram pensadas para serem simples, de formato menor e preto/branco, mais tarde o cliente preferiu uma edição mais vistosa, a cores.

Estes storyboards foram feitos em 2008, a pedido de um realizador meu colega, para o remake do videoclip "Tu aroma, tu sabor", do músico setubalense, Marco Alonso, a filmar na zona histórica de Palmela. Tanto quanto sei, a produção foi adiada.

Embora o storyboarding tenha sido despachado em tempo recorde, tratei também da concepção integral da sequência, que iria usar a figura de um trovador e integrar imagéticas inspiradas em filmes de Jean Cocteau, mescladas com arte urbana. Fora estes efeitos especiais, que trariam um splash de cores, o video em si seria a preto/branco.

V Festival Internacional BD de Beja

No passado Junho integrei o programa do 5º FIBDB. É sempre um prazer colaborar com a Bedeteca de Beja. Há quase dez anos que acompanho o seu percurso e autores (ainda antes do Atelier Toupeira passar a Bedeteca), e desde cedo participo nos seus zines. Por isso, é uma satisfação acrescida testemunhar a afirmação do ‘Beja, ano após ano.

Last June I had the chance to partake in the 5th Beja’s Internacional Comics Festival. It’s always a pleasure, given I’ve followed their growth as a cultural group for almost 10 years (even before the Toupeira Studio became a Comics Library) and collaborate in publications of theirs since early on. Hence, it’s a huge satisfation to see the festival further establishing itself each year.

Desta feita, contribuí com as colectivas “All-Girlz” e “All-Girlz Banzai”, que respectivamente reúnem pranchas dos comics All-Girlzine e All-Girlz Galore, e do vindouro ‘zine homónimo dedicado a mangakas. Acompanhando as expos, lancei ainda o 2º comic da iniciativa (dedicada a destacar o trabalho de autoras de BD), intitulado All-Girlz Galore, via a chancela Arga Warga.

This year I’ve contributed with the collective exhibits, “All-Girlz” and “All-Girlz Banzai”, which respectively show works from the comics All-Girlzine and All-Girlz Galore, and a forthcoming homonimous zine exclusive to mangakas. Following that, I also published the 2nd comic of the initiative (which showcases female comic artists), titled All-Girlz Galore, by Arga Warga Publ.

Por último, a encerrar o evento, acompanhei Hugo Jesus, admin. do portal CentralComics.com (onde colaboro há já 7 anos…) na atribuição dos VII Troféus Central Comics, prémios de banda desenhada portugueses nos quais os leitores e o público são quem determina os vencedores.

Este ano, os destaques vão para a editora BDmania, com os prémios Melhor Álbum Estrangeiro (Fábula de Bagdad), Argumento (Brian K. Vaughn) e Desenho Est. (Niko Henrichon), e Edições Asa, pela distinção em Melhor Editora, partilhada com o jornal O Público, e em Melhor Projecto em BD, pela aposta num catálogo Mangá.

Lastly, in the final weekend, I accompanied Hugo Jesus, the admin. of portal CentralComics.com (where I collaborate for 7 years now…), in announcing the VII Central Comics Awards, that commend the portuguese comic market and in which the readers and general public are who determine the winners.

This year, the stand-outs were publisher BDmania, with awards for Best Foreign Volume (Pride of Bagdad), plus Best Foreing Writer (Brian K. Vaughn) and Artist (Niko Henrichon), and Asa Editions, as Best Publisher, alongside O Público newspaper, and for Best Project in Comics, for starting a mangá oriented catalogue.

XVI Salão Internacional BD de Viseu

Abriu no passado Sábado, dia 12, o 16º Salão Internacional BD de Viseu, organizado pelo GICAV. O evento vai estender-se pela Biblioteca Municipal, Museu Grão Vasco, na Casa das Artes, no Lugar do Capitão, e por fim na sede do IPJ, onde terei uma pequena expo de trabalhos, junto com as restantes colectivas ali patentes. Mais informações sobre o salão aqui.

The event will be held at the various cultural spots, amongst those the head-office of IPJ (Portuguese Institute for Youth), we’re I’ll have a small exhibit of my own, amidst other collectives there. Sandocha de Manápula!

Inserido no Ciclo de Homenagem a Robert E. Howard que tenho coordenado no 'zine Tertúlia BDzine, foi distribuído em Julho a 5ª banda desenhada do tributo, intitulada “Titãs de Hong Kong”, evocando o marujo boxeur “Sailor” Steve Costigan.

Costigan é um duro mas bronco pugilista, que nos contos de REH acaba por sair vitorioso no último instante, como que bafejado pela proverbial “sorte do irlandês.” Inicialmente igual a outros nos pulp de combate dos 30’s, Costigan destacou-se não só devido ao talento de Howard mas também por assumir o “burlesco” e comicidade da sua narrativa.

Foi o que tentei recriar no guião, inclusivamente chamando Dennis Dorgan à história, o qual, como era frequente então, funcionava como alias de Costigan (como Kalidor é de Conan…), um nome por que o herói respondia para passar incógnito, permitindo ao escritor contornar contratos com a editora e vender mais contos daquela criação noutros periódicos. Os tempos eram difíceis na altura…

Tal como Conan, Costigan foi das criações de Howard que mais espelhava a personalidade e desejos do escritor, também ele um boxeur e de sangue irlandês. Daqui a tempos, quando estiver esgotado o manancial dos heróis mais célebres, como os remake de Conan e Sonja (ok, esta é só inspirada na sua original Red Sonya of Rogatino…), mais Solomon Kane e o vindouro Bran Mak Morn, quiçá surja novo “Cinderella Man” à lá Howard (...o escritor) ;)

Convidei Heguinil Mendes para desenhar a ‘curta, após me aperceber do seu talento quando participou na iniciativa CC: Cadavre Exquis. Adaptando a acção ao seu jeito, o trabalho do Heguinil é dos mais frescos e reveladores de potencial que tenho visto a nível nacional nos últimos anos.

“Sailor Steve Costigan em Titãs de Hong Kong”

Inserted in the Robert E. Howard Homage Cicle that I’m coordinating in a comics fanzine, the short story “Titans of Hong Kong”, featuring the boxeur seaman “Sailor” Steve Costigan, was distributed last July.

Costigan is a tough but dumb prize fighter, that in REH’s tales end’s up winning at the last minute, as if favoured by the proverbial “luck of the Irish.” Similar to other characters in the 30’s pulps, Costigan stood out not only because of Howard’s talent but also for accepting the burlesc and humorous nature of its narrative.

I tried to recreate that in the script, also calling Dennis Dorgan into the story, a character which, as was frequent at the time, funtioned as an alias (like Kalidor was Conan’s…), a name the hero went by to go around incognito, thus alowing the writer to further exploit his creation on other periodicals, by-passing eventual publication agreements.

Like with Conan, Costigan is one of Howard’s heroes that best reflect its creator’s personality and desires, him also being a boxeur and of irish blood. Perhaps once the more famous character’s have been exausted, such as Conan’s remake, Sonja’s (ok, she was inspired by Red Sonya of Rogatino), plus Solomon Kane and the forthcoming Bran Mak Morn, we’ll have a new “Cinderella Man” movie, à lá Howard (…the writer) ;)

I’ve invited artist Heguinil Mendes to draw this comic, after seeing his potencial in my Cadavre Exquis project. Adapting the action to his style, Heguinil’s work remains one of the freshest, most talented I’ve seen in Portugal over the last few years.

Há uns anos, fiquei sem uma pasta repleta(!) de trabalhos, tanto BDs finalizadas como ilustrações publicitárias. Se isso em si já foi catastrófico, pior ainda foi conter lá originais encomendados a uma amiga, a autora Maria João Careto. Por sorte, as suas pranchas pertenciam ao lote que já havia sido digitalizado; entretanto, quis redimir-me oferecendo-lhe uma comissão, que ela escolheu ser esta Catwoman…

A few years back, a briefcase filled(!) with artwork was taken from me, containing from finished comic pages to advertising illustrations. Although the loss was catastrophic, worser still was losing original artworks commissioned to a friend, author Maria João Careto. Luckily, her artboards were amongst the few that had already been scanned; meanwhile, I tried to redeemed myself offering her a commission, which she choose to be this Catwoman…

Bem-vindos ao meu novo blog! …Já se passou um tempo, pelo que decidi largar o antigo, Templo Maia (podem ver aqui o post final), e começar de fresco com este.

Começo pelo ponto da situação. Antes de mais, abandonei o website-portfólio DanielMaia.com. Devido a problemas no alojamento, que há quase dois anos me impedia de efectuar updates, e porque por isso ambos o webdesign e conteúdos estavam embaraçosamente desactualizados, deixei expirar o domínio. Até criar novo site, podem seguir os meus novos trabalhos e notícias aqui, e em breve também em redes sociais como Deviantart, etc. Anúncio tudo assim que esteja pronto.

Outra “novidade”, para elucidar muito boa gente, é que o Estúdio Hydra que integrava foi decepado há quase 2 anos. Em Janeiro de 2008, por desavença com a administração, decidimos largar o espaço. E como, após um período sabático, não nos foi possível encontrar outro local que conviesse os quatro, pois estávamos espalhados quais pontos cardeais, acabámos por nos separar amigavelmente. Para sanar mais equívocos e deflectir suspeitas infundadas, fiz recentemente um derradeiro post no blog do grupo. “Let Hercules himself do what he may.”;P

Em meados de 2008, aluguei um novo estúdio mais perto de casa. Não será a melhor das masmorras no mercado, mas é bastante acolhedora para uma pessoa e permite ter lá colegas a trabalhar ou em companhia, assim como reunir com clientes. Já está prometido a um amigo um studio tour virtual, mas por ora deixo só umas fotos…

De resto, há várias f.a.q. a comentar e trabalhos-em-progresso e terminados por mostrar, mas vamos com calma. Por agora, obrigado pela atenção e visita. Até breve (…leia-se, “amanhã”)!

Welcome to my new blog! …It’s been a while, so I decided to drop my old blog, Templo Maia, and begin anew with this one (checkout the final post here).

First, a situation overhaul. For starters, I’ve abandoned my portfólio-website, DanielMaia.com. Due to growing problems with the server, that for nearly two years kept me from making updates, and because both the webdesign and contents were sorely out-of-date, I just let the domain expire. Until I put up a new one, you can follow up on new works and news from me here, and soon on other net communities also, like Deviantart, et al. I’ll announce it when all it’s a Go.

Another “old” news, to shed a light to some fine folks, is that the Hydra Studio to which I belonged was beheaded almost 2 years ago. In January 2008, due to quarrels with the landlords, we decided to dump the space. But because we lived too far apart, scattered like cardinal directions, and couldn’t find an affordable new spot that pleased all four of us, we simply separated on good terms. To stop baseless suspicions and deflect other misunderstandings concerning it, there’s one final post on the group’s blog. “Let Hercules himself do what he may…” ;)

Then, around middle of 2008, I rented a new studio nearer home. It’s not the best dungeon in the marketplace, but it’s more then enough for one person and allows for having colleagues over to work or hang out, plus meeting with clients. I already promissed a virtual studio tour to a friend, but for now here’s a just couple of photos…
